Letter From the Executive DirectorIn this issue of Pet Prints, we hope to share with you a few ofthe successes that the Cheyenne Animal Shelter has experienced inthe last few months and to thank you, ourcommunity, for the support we have received. The Fur Ball was a huge successagain this year, with more than 700 generouspeople raising $228,000 for orphaned, abused, neglected and abandoned animalsin southeast Wyoming. I am continuallypleased to see that Cheyenne not onlytalks about the importance of caring forits homeless animals, but does somethingabout it! If you missed this event, be sureto catch it next year, March 24, 2012,because you won’t want to miss it again! A big thank you is due toeveryone that was involved in again making the Fur Ball the premierevent that it continues to be. Many people put in many hours, andyou are all truly lifesavers. We are headed into a difficult time at the Cheyenne AnimalShelter. The summer months always prove a challenge, as litter afterlitter of kittens are dropped off at our doors and our walls swell withoccupants. Please, for the sake of all the animals brought to the shelterand the ones left to fend for themselves on the streets, tell everyoneyou know about the importance of spaying and neutering. If costis a concern, our Big Fix program can help with financial assistance.Microchipping is also a very low-cost method of helping to make surelost pets get home, and isn’t restricted to dogs. Only about 3 percentof lost cats that come to the shelter are claimed by their owners.Microchipping cats can change that.Summer also means that Hogs for Dogs, a motorcycle paradeand poker run, and Dog Jog, a fun run/walk at Lions Park, are justaround the corner! You can start raising money now by visiting www.firstgiving.com/cheyenneanimalshelter. We have some terrific prizesfor the top money raisers. We also need help planning and runningthe events. If you’d like to get involved, please give us a call at 632-6655.I wish all of you a happy and safe summer, and thank you foryour continued support.Rick CollordBoard of DirectorsJerry EggePresidentMartin MatsenVice PresidentLynn BoakTreasurerHeather FrauendienstAssistant TreasurerJanet MarschnerSecretaryWard AndersonBrad CaveHolly HansonPhil KinerMax MaxfieldBo ShortDusty TheinDeb WalkerShelter ManagementRick CollordExecutive DirectorRob ShankShelter ManagerBaylie EvansCommunity RelationsTori MenardBookkeeperStarr MezaHuman ResourcesBrock OstranderVolunteer CoordinatorRebecca Sims-McIntoshDonations CoordinatorNatasha BrownPeople Care SupervisorGina LawsonPeople Care SupervisorKate MillerAnimal Care SupervisorJill PhillipsAnimal Care SupervisorPage 3

“I adopted the love of my life (Monkey, a Schnauzer/Boston Terriermix) back on May 22nd, 2010, from your shelter. I was told that hermom and dad both were surrendered when she was just a week old,and that a volunteer raised her and her brothers and sisters until shewas old enough to adopt. We just wanted to let them know how wellshe is and how much we appreciate people like them taking the timeand effort to give an unwanted dog the chance for a good life. Warm Weather SafetyTips for PetsBring enough water for both ofyou. When walking, running, hiking, biking or just playing fetchin the yard, remember that yourdog will get hot and thirsty too.Bring pets, including outdoorcats, inside when it’s hot.Never leave animals in aparked car. Even with thewindows open or in the shade, cars become like furnaces in notime.Consider giving Fido a summerhaircut. Shorter, lighter-weightfur can help prevent over-heating.Also dogs can use sunscreen speciallymade for animals.Keep walks on hot pavement toa minimum. A dog’s paws canburn and his body temperaturecan increase quickly since he’s soclose to the ground. Not all dogs are good swimmers.Don’t assume yours is.Keep dogs at home in a placewhere they feel safe duringfireworks shows. The loud noisescombined with lots of peoplearound can be stressful.Beware of open windows thatpets, usually cats, can fall outof. Ensure screens are secure. In the News ...Reward for information onattempted poisoningThe Cheyenne Animal Shelteris offering a $500 reward for informationleading to the arrest and convictionof a person who left antifreeze ona local neighborhood street with theapparent intent of poisoning pets.Last February, Cheyenne/LaramieCounty Animal Control receiveda call that someone had left a plate ofantifreeze with sausage links soakingin it at the Continental Estates MobileHome Park at 1508 S. Greeley Highway.Officers responded and investigatedthe situation. They learned that thearea had a problem with free-roamingcats, and it was likely that someone putthe antifreeze out with the intention ofkilling cats.Regular antifreeze is extremelydeadly to humans and animals in smallamounts, and like all poisons is indiscriminatein who or what it poisons.Animal Control has not yet receivedany reports of animals sickened orkilled by antifreeze in the area. Anyanimal appearing disoriented or sickshould be taken to a veterinarian immediately. The Cheyenne Animal Shelteroffers a Feral Cat program to humanelycombat the number of free-roamingcats in our area by trapping, neuteringand returning them. Call the shelter at632-6655 for more information on thatprogram.Anyone with information aboutthis crime should call Cheyenne AnimalControl at 635-1453.Page 9
