PLANT DISEASE
jEnJ
REPORTER,
[En Abstj (REP.MB--0513)
Diseases are a con3tant threat and often a limiting factor in the
cultivation of pulse crops in Iran. In the drier areas aiseases caused by
viruses and root rot fungi were seen most frequently and were of greatest
economic importance, while foliai diseases were usually confined to the wetter
regions of the country. The diseases of beans, broadbeans, chickpeas, cowpeas,
lentils, mungbeans, and peas that occur in Iran are listed and sume
observations on their importance and distribution within the country are made.
Mungbean mosaic virus, an aphid-transmitted, seedborne virus, is one of the
most important and widespread virus diseases in Iran. Yields from infected
plants ,jere decreased 31 to 75%. A crown rot of munghean incited by Rhizoctonia
solani caused 4 Zo 57% mortality in young plantings. [AS]
Bean rust caused by Uromyce5 phaseoli var. typica is widely distributed in
India. The disease has been reported on mungbean, blackgram, cowpea, and French
bean. Yellow mosaic diseases, characterized by blight yellow patches on the
leaves interspersed with green areas are common in mungbean, blackgram, and
soybeans, which is transmitted by whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). jTHHJ
