Ninety one cultivars of mungbean, Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek were screened<br />

for resistance to whitefly, Bemiria tabaci G.; jassid, Empoasca moti P.; pod<br />

borers, Lampides boeticus L., Maruca testulalis G. and Heliothis armigera H.;<br />

and yellow mosaic virus in the field for two seasons, 1977 and 1978. Four<br />

cultivars viz. ML 194, ML 195, ML 235 and 15127 were found to be resistant to<br />

these pests as well as the virus. [AS]<br />

A total of 6775 soybean and 3713 mungbean accessions was screened for<br />

resistance to the beanfly, Ophiomyia phaseoli (Tryon), and 2 other agromyzlds,<br />

0. centrosematis (de Meijere), and Melanagromyza sojae (Zehntner), in mass<br />

scre!ening trials during 2 yL. Since no immune accessions were found in the<br />

preliminary screeding, we did a directional selection and screaned the least<br />

affected entries a 2nd and 3rd time. We selected 16 soybean and 28 mungbean<br />

accessions that were least affected. When tested at 6 locations around Taiwan,<br />

4 soybean and 3 mungbean accessions were least affected at all locations. These<br />

soybean accessions were highly resistant and mungbean accessions were<br />

moderately resistant to all 3 species. These accessions are now being used to<br />

breed resistance into high yield potential commercial varieties of these crops.<br />

A total of 6775 soybean and 3713 mungbean accessions from AVRDC and 369<br />

snapbean accessions from CIAT were screened at AVRDC for beanfly resistance.<br />

Four soybean accessions, G 3089, G 3091, G 3104, and G 3122 are highly<br />

resistant. Three mungbean accessions, V 2396, V 3495, and V 4281 are considered<br />

to be moderately resistant. One snapbean accession, G 35023, fell in high<br />

resistance and seven accessions, G 35075, G 35122, G 08047, G 08408, G 05478, G<br />

02472, and P 492 fell in the moderate resistance category. These material<br />

appear to be promising for use in a resistance breeding program. [THH]<br />

All 112 lines of blackgram were screened for resistance to pod borers under<br />

the conditions of natural infection for four consecutive seasons of 1976-1980.<br />

All lines were sown in double rows of 5 m length with a spacing of 30 x 10 cm.<br />

Test lines were sown between the rows of local check CO 4. All normal cultural<br />
