Symptom expression and incubation peciod of bean common mosaic virus in<br />

blackgram (Vigna mungo) is affected by the stage of tile test plant, inoculum<br />

potential, salt concentration and pH of the buffer used for extraction of<br />

infective sap and temperature during and after inoculation of the plants.<br />

Optimum conditions favoring fullest expression of the symptoms and shorter<br />

incubation period are inoculation of the test plants at the third trifoliate<br />

stage with standard inoculum of I.OE-2 dilution extracted in potassium<br />

phosphate buffer of 7.6 pH and 0.2 molarity. Placing the inoculated plants at<br />

22 to 26 C results in earlier and severe symptom appearance. [AS]<br />

The bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) was present in seeds of all the 25<br />

germplasm and varieties of blackgram studied, though seed transmission ranged<br />

from 24 to [0. Plants which expressed mosaic mottle symptoms from five to 30<br />

days after sowing showed 17.3/ seed transmission, whereas those expressing the<br />

symptoms from 30 to 40 and from 40 to 50 days after sowing showed 12.1/ and<br />

5.14, respectively. Small seeds showed a slightly higher percentage<br />

transmission than shrivelled and bold ones. The virus was not inactivated<br />

during any stage of seed development. Neither dry heat nor hot water treatment<br />

had any effect on the survival of BCMV within the seeds while they remained<br />
