Yes, this means oneAmerican dies every thirty minutesfrom the lack of health insurance. We are losing more Americans everyday from lack of health care thanfrom drunk driving and homicidecombined. Those who lack healthinsurance have a 40% higher risk ofdeath. The statistics are abominable!Furthermore we must findways to expand coverage and reducehealthcare costs. The reason I ambrining up this highly contentiousissue is that I almost died three timesthis past year and if it were not forObama care I would not be here today. It all started with a high riskspine operation that lasted 8 hoursand half way through my heartstopped and my kidneys failed. I waskept in a morphine coma for a month. My lower legs atrophied. Finally myback recovery reversed and I was leftin severe pain.I came across Obama careafter having Cobra Insurance forsix years while I served as a citycommissioner. After leaving thecommission, so one wanted to insureme. Finally I stumble onto a newpolicy called PCIP (Obama care) forthose with pre-existing conditions. Iwas one of the very first on my blockto get it thanks to my host of pre-tom oosterhoudteditor&publisherexisting conditions. It kept me alivewhen my health was on the brink andI was hanging on by a thread. This past month I had toendure two major spine operationsas well as a partial stroke in an effortto regain my health and fix my spine. Finally I seem to be on my wayback, though recovery is a long andexhausting thing to go through.I have thanked my staff andso many of my friends for standing byme as I was fighting for my life. Butthere is one person who is not onlymy best friend, but someone whohas stood by me through thick andthin. My amazing 86 year old motherhas been by my side as I watchedmy life hanging on by a thread. Shealso watched over Conch Color likea watch dog, never missing a thing.I cannot thank her enough for herdiligence and never ending affection. There just are not words enough to tellhe how much I appreciate her help.As always, I thank all myfriends and Conch Color’s friends forsticking by us as I fought for my life.Again our advertisers have kept usalive. THE FISHKILL – PART 2 FinaleA Short Story byF. W. Belland“ We want yourA Concrete Restoration Company, specializing in concrete repair and painting.305-294-9119 • 1700 N Roosevelt Blvd.Papadad peeled back the blanket. The coldstruck Bing, colder than anything he’d felt in hislife. Papadad pulled him from the bunk by thearm.“Boy, this is something. It’s a miracle I onlyseen once.” Papadad kept pulling him until theywere on deck. Papadad could hardly stand andheld himself up on the gunwale. “Look!” he criedhoarsely. He waved his arm at the low mangroveislands where they’d drifted. Over the sea laymore than false dawn. In the queer light Bing sawpatches on the water. Not patches, fish, hundredsof fish floating on the top of the flat calm. Thousands. He shivered. They were surrounded byfish, white bellies to the sky, thick to the point ofbumping into one another, bumping against thehull of the boat. “It’s a fish kill, boy. The cold’sstunned them near dead.” Bing stared at the fishthen at Papadad. Bing figured he must have gottena new whisky bottle because he drank froma full quart. He capped the bottle and wiped hismouth on his hand. “It’s a goddamned miracle.Just like Jesus and the disciples in the Sea ofGalilee.” He shook Bing by the shoulder. “Don’tyou see? All we got to do is dip them up. We’llbe rich, son.” Papadad’s eyes cartwheeled like twobloodied eggs. “Get the bully nets. Hurry.”Bing stumbled forward and found the longhandled nets. Papadad wandered from side toside looking at the fish and muttering to himself. The boy returned to his father thinking how theywere lucky and would be rich, but a forebodingdarted at the numbed cap of his brain.Bing and Papadad began dipping up the fish.Ppadad worked like an engine but the whiskymade him clumsy. He hauled up fish three andfour at a time, slinging them toward the ice box.In a fit of impatience Papadad took off the hatchtop and balanced it on the gunwale while heshoveled fish in. He lurched toward the side andknocked the hatch top hard. It teetered and fellinto the water with a splash. Bing tried to reach itwith the handle of his net. It slipped away.“Leave it, boy. Leave it.” The old man pantedlike a dog. “Leave the goddamned thing. We’llmake another. Just get them fish into the box.”Bing watched the hatch cover drift slowly fromthem then began dipping up fish again as Papadadtold him. Some of the fish were truly dead, others movedtheir fins and gills in convulsions. The fishboxfilled rapidly. What little shaved ice remainedwas overwhelmed and disappeared beneath theslithering, gasping fish. Papadad didn’t slowdown. He began making a pile in the stern of theboat. The sun came up in a rush and the scaledfish hides glistened wetly in the light.“What about ice, Papadad?”“Don’t need ice, boy. S’cold enough.” The oldman would not even look at him now. He kepthis head down where the bullynet was, wildlyslinging more fish aboard, tottering from side toside and breathing in gasps. “Get the good ones, boy, the expensive ones.” He’d lost his ball capand perspiration glued curls of hair to his face.“Get the big ones!”Bing closed his ears to the awful noise Papadadmade and studied hard on the fish. Theywere heavy and his arms ached. He tried for thebest ones, the pretty ones the market would usefor display and pay the most for. The fish staredback at him from where he’d stacked them intoa pile. Bing felt sorry for them then, but he keptworking. He worked hard and the work warmedhim. Only his fingers were still numbed fromthe cold of the sea. In an hour he’d taken offhis jacket. The sun was hot on the back of hisneck. He looked up suddenly and saw that allwas quiet and that he was alone. Papadad’s netlay on the deck.“Papadad!” He screamed. The old man hadgone over the side he just knew it. “Papadad!”Bing ran forward looking into the water. “Oh.Papadad.” Half blinded in his tears Bing turnedand turned trying to see everywhere at onceout toward the horizon. Then at the door ofthe cabin he almost tripped over the soles of hisfather’s boots. The boots hung off the bunk.“Papadad.” Bing knelt on the deck beside thebunk and shook him. The big head lolled asif the man’s neck had been broken. A threadof saliva bled from the corner of the mouthand eye whites showed from slitted lids. “Wehave to get the fish in, Papadad. They’ll spoilif we don’t take them in now. Papadad. Getup. Please.” Papadad breathed long and deepand as Bing shook him all the harder, the manbegan to snore.Bing left his father and returned to the cockpitstepping around the piles of dead fish. Thesun had gotten good and warm, now. With allhis strength Bing raised the cover of the enginewell, straining himself until little fuzzy specksdanced before his eyes. The old Grey hunchedin its place like an oily beast. Bing opened thefuel line and inserted the handle into the greatiron fly wheel. He switched the ignition togglethen braced and pulled with both hands. Thefly wheel moved a quarter of an inch and wouldmove no more.Bing sat down, his feet dangling in thebilge. The thought came that he ought to tryagain. He didn’t. It would be no use. “It’s allso unfair,” he told himself. He didn’t deserve it.The he knew fairness had nothing to do withanything, that this was how things were forhim and Papadad, how things always were andthat he couldn’t change it. Before he realizedhe was doing it, Bing began planning how hewould manage. He’d have to take care of theold man for a couple of days now until he gotover being sick from the whisky. He could dothat. He figured he’d better get the five dollarsout of the tobacco can and hide it for later. There were things he needed to do, things he’ddone before.Bing rested on the lip of the engine well andlooked at the teeth on the Grey’s flywheel. Hewondered then why he’d ever been afraid of itbefore. It wasn’t much at all, really. Just an oldrusty piece of iron. An average man could turnit. Even a small man or a big kid. He hated theGrey. If Galilee was his boat, he’d rip it out andthrow it over the side. That would be the firstthing he’d do if he could, and he’d do it rightthen even if they had to row home. The ideaalmost made him laugh out loud. He couldn’twait to tell it to Papadad. Papadad was a greatkidder, wasn’t he?Bing felt the cold evaporate. On deck thesun beat down from a cloudless sky and thesmell of ruined fish grew as the boat driftedbefore a small breeze which rose from the GulfStream.- The End -This is a selection from the upcoming collection of shortstories by F.W. Belland and Chris Belland, entitled“Almost Havana”.

Monday is the anniversary ofthe death of Deputy Frank Adams, killed in the line of duty 112 years agoon October 7th, 1901. Deputy FrankAdams was the first of seven Sheriff ’sdeputies killed in the line of duty inMonroe County. Deputy Adams wasshot and killed while attempting toarrest a man who had interfered withhim in the discharge of his duty. Theshooting occurred after two drunkenmen started fighting near JacksonSquare in Key West. They separatedand one of the men began to useprofane language as he walked upThomas Street. Deputy Adams, whowas sitting near the corner of Southardand Thomas Streets, arrested theman and attempted to take him tojail, but the man resisted and DeputyAdams called out for assistance. Twomen named Fleming and Gabrieltook hold of the man to assist Adams.Another man pushed some bystandersaside and said that he would not allowthem to arrest his brother. DeputyAdams released the first man he hadarrested and grabbed the man whointerfered. They began to struggle, and a pistol shot rang out. When thefirst shot rang out all the bystanderswith the exception of one, a mate onthe steamer Laurel, ran away; the twomen holding the arrested man let himgo and fled also. Adams had been shotin the arm, and he fell to the ground, with the man who shot him fallingon top of him. The man shot Adamsseveral more times, with one bullethitting him in the left chest, penetratinghis heart and another woundinghim in the face. After shootingAdams, the man got up and ran downSouthard Street toward what was thenthe Government Reservation. A largecrowd soon gathered around the bodyof Deputy Adams and the mate fromthe Laurel - the only one to stay at thescene. The mate told the crowd howthe murder had happened. DeputyAdam’s body was taken home. Thefollowing day the shooter, Robert J.Frank, was caught and identified bythe mate from the Laurel as the personwho shot and killed Adams. He wasarrested for and charged with murderingthe deputy. At the preliminaryhearing Robert Frank admitted to theshooting and said that he was sorryfor it. He said that had anyone attemptedto arrest him, he would haveshot them as well. When searchedhe had some empty cartridges and aloaded pistol, with extra ammunitionin his pocket.FREE TIN OF COOKIESFor Florida Keys SPCADonationsHelp DoubleTree by Hilton Grand Key Resort and Conch Color raise money forthe Florida Keys SPCA. I usethe politicians specifically to notethe rather significant, if not subtledifference between a politician anda statesman. A politician is the onewho is worried about the next electionwhile a statesman is worriedabout the next generation. Today,we seem to have a great abundanceof the former and a scarcity of thelatter.I am not a great student ofpolitics or political history and Imust suppose that, humans beinghumans, not much is different todayfrom years ago, although it seems so.Perhaps through the lens of time,we either forget or are not privy tothe pettiness and self-interest of thepast that seems all so prevalent intoday’s world. Perhaps it is our needfor heroes that makes us only seethe good of a George Washington, aHenry Clay, a Theodore Roosevelt, aDaniel Webster, an FDR or Truman. It is a sad truth in our present daythat there is an inordinate amount ofhubris, pettiness and downright nastinesspervading our political world, especially in Washington, DC.Just a short while ago, I had theopportunity to talk to former Governor,Senator and presidential candidate,Bob Graham, and asked himjust what is going on in Washington. His answer was astonishinglysimple. He told me that they do notknow each other any more. When Ipressed him for an explanation, hetold me how it all related to the adventof the jet airplane. He told me,before th`e jet airplane, politiciansin Washington were elected fromremote states and when they cameto Washington, they pretty muchstayed through from the beginningGrilledto the end of a session because it wastoo arduous a trip to return home.LambBecause of this, they ate togetherin the Congressional dining room,Crabtheir wives were members of Congressionalspouse organizations,Cakestheir kids went to the same schoolsand, in fact, they even invited eachother from both sides of the aisleover to the house on weekends fora barbeque. They generally kneweach other, empathized with eachother and had some level of friendshipthat caused them to work moreconch color the florida keys 14 photographic chronicleclosely together to find solutions inthe best interest of our people. The jet airplane changed all that.Graham told me how as soon as oneis elected to public office, it begins aconstant effort to raise funds for thenext election which requires them toleave on Thursdays and go home fora long weekend, returning Mondaynight. Therefore, he explained, politicians spend more time at home(meaning their home state) listeningto the constant barrage of demands, requests and “suggestions”, ratherthan an opposing point of view tobe considered in whatever the finalresolution of an issue might be.The situation in Washingtontoday is shameful. Whether you arefor or against Obamacare, and I havesome very real reasons to be wary ofit, the fact is it has been passed intolaw but the Republicans are settingthemselves up for a serious fall byusing the tactic of a governmentshutdown to get another bite at theapple. Now I am not saying the Republicansdo not have a point relativeto the amount of expendituresand waste under the present regime, but I think they are digging themselvesa hole and the Democrats arebeginning to see this as an opportunityto help them shovel. They, the Democrats, can now point theirfingers at the Republicans and saythat this whole mess is their fault. Infact, they are both at fault. Ironically, they can fiddle while the nationburns because they have nothingimmediate to lose. Yes, Congresswill be paid right on schedule whilethose affected by the shutdown willnot. Perhaps worse, if a Congressmanis not re-elected, they will stillbe paid and receive full retirementbenefits if they are unseated orretire. Not a bad deal, but it wouldbe better and solve a lot of problemsin our world if Congressmen couldmake no law for others that did notaffect them equally. In a sense, we have let Congressmake their own rules that have setthem up as an elitist class in ourcountry and I do not think that isquite what our forefathers had inmind when they cast off the yokeof tyranny during the AmericanRevolution.
