Third Sunday of Easter — April 18, 2010
The Great Fifty Days
Follow Me ~ Call and Witness
The Easter Season Scriptures at a Glance:
During the Easter Season, the Acts of the Apostles replaces the usual Hebrew
Scriptures (Old Testament) for the First Reading. Acts is the “history” of the
early Church from Saint Luke.
First (Acts of the Apostles) Scripture: Acts 5: 27-32, 40b - 41
As the apostles are brought before the Sanhedrin, they give witness to Jesus
without fear. They are told once more not to speak the name of Jesus and they
are dismissed. They rejoice in his name.
The Second (Revelation) Scripture: Revelations 5: 11-14
John declares the glory of Jesus, the Lamb of God, for worthy is the Lamb that
was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory
and blessing.
The (Good News) Gospel: John 21: 1-19
The disciples are welcomed on the shore by the Risen Christ. They cast their
nets on the right side at his suggestion and finally have a catch. John
recognizes Jesus and Peter jumps into the water to get to the nearby shore.
Jesus invites them to have breakfast, both bread and fish. He then speaks to
Simon Peter asking him three times, "Do you love me?" As he has denied him three times, he now professes his love three times and
is commissioned to feed his lambs and to tend his sheep. Jesus predicts Peter's ultimate death.
Breaking Open the Easter Word:
The impact of the resurrection on the disciples unfolds with his many appearances to the Apostles, to the women, and to others. He
clearly chooses Peter from among the Apostles to feed his sheep. His threefold denial has given way to a threefold affirmation of his
love and faith. The meal of the bread and fish evokes the multiplication of the loaves and the fish and the miracle that is the
Eucharist. Jesus both feeds and calls his disciples through Peter to feed his lambs, his sheep. As witnesses to the name of Jesus after
Pentecost, the Spirit-filled Disciples will neither be fearful nor silenced as they proclaim Jesus as the Lamb that was slain to receive
power and glory.
Some Easter Season Reflections by Father Tom:
As we celebrate these Fifty Days of Easter, we are challenged to look into our lives in light of our Lenten Journey, and to ask
ourselves how we have strengthened in the practices of our faith. Like Peter, we are called to see our own denials and like Peter to
see things in a new light through our increasing love for Jesus. Have we really changed for the better or have the old habits just
begun to creep back into our lives? Have we really come to love Christ more deeply or have the "changes" in our lives been shortlived
and superficial?
Discipleship calls for continuing growth and struggle. We have the graces that we need to grow in discipleship through the
power of Jesus Christ, yet we must continue the ongoing struggle to deepen in our faith and in our commitment to Christ cooperating
with his grace. Like Peter, Jesus calls us and like Peter, our response must be to witness to the faith fearlessly and in the Spirit. We
are to give witness both as individuals and as a Catholic Community, by inviting others to "come home" through our example,
through our words of welcome, and through our deeds of love and caring concern for others. This is the joy of Easter, to celebrate
life and love in Christ with one another and to reach out to all with the love of Christ, which gathers us together.
ANNUAL CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL: This weekend we launch the Annual Diocesan
Ministries Appeal. The theme this year is "One in the Body and Blood of the Lord." We know that you will
be as generous as always in supporting the many Catholic Ministries in our Diocese of Joliet. This is also a special "Year of the
Eucharist" in the Diocese. We encourage you to take time before the Blessed Sacrament in the new Prayer Chapel, dedicated for this
year and years to come and in prayer to be most generous to the Ministries Appeal, which brings the love of Christ to so many
through our Diocesan ministries and services.
As we mark these Great Fifty Days of Easter and the celebration of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy
Eucharist, and as we celebrate this "Year of the Eucharist" in our Diocese of Joliet, may you be blessed abundantly in the grace of
the Risen Christ and his Holy Spirit.
2010 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL
Diocese of Joliet
Sign-Up Weekend, April 24/25
In today's Gospel, while crossing the
sea in their boat, the Apostles see
Jesus coming to them, walking on the
water. Many challenges and problems
frighten us. Christ's presence through
our Diocesan Ministries becomes the best compass and guide.
The Catholic Ministries Appeal begins in our parish this
weekend. Every family will receive a letter from
Bishop J. Peter Sartain asking for a pledge to help us in calming
fears and taking our brothers and sisters safely to shore. Please
return your pledge card to the parish next weekend,
Mission Statement
We the people of St. Pius X Church, a faith community in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet, Illinois, accept the challenge to
restore all things in Christ through the use of our gifts and ministry. Guided by the Father, nourished by the Eucharist, and inspired
by the Holy Spirit we embrace all through our commitment to worship, education, service, and stewardship.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY THE GREAT ADVENTURE CONTINUES . . .
The St. Vincent de Paul Society is very
grateful for the support we have received
from our fellow parishioners, and especially
for your generosity during the Lenten daily
offerings and the recent St. Joseph’s Table.
However, we are becoming increasingly
concerned that your gifts might not be utilized in ways we had
envisioned. Our concern is that there may be members of our
parish family who are in need, and their needs are not being
met.
In these days of downsizing, outsourcing, and
restructuring, we know these actions have serious consequences
for families. It is not reasonable to expect that all our parish
family has escaped these adversities. However, we have not
received the requests for assistance we might have expected.
Therefore, we are asking that if you have any knowledge of
members of our parish family who might be in need, please
contact our parish office, anonymously, if you prefer, and that
information will be passed along to us. Obviously, all such
communications, and our subsequent actions, are held in
strictest confidence.
It would be very unfortunate if families of our parish, who
may be in need, did not benefit from your generous actions,
merely because we were unaware of their needs.
Join Bishop Sartain as he reminds us that as Jesus gives
Himself to us in the Eucharist to be our spiritual nourishment,
He also draws us into a deeper relationship with Him and with
all the members of His mystical body, the Church.
JESUS CHRIST CREW NEWS
First - thanks to all who have turned in their flower orders
which will help us fund our trip to Spain in 2011. If you still
want to turn in a flower order, the absolute LAST day you can
turn it in is Monday, April 19th to the parish office. Thanks to
everyone who helped us with this!!
Secondly, we had a BLAST at our last meeting. We began
with a rousing game of noodle hockey - yeah, it was FUN!!
Then it was off to the
kitchen to bake some
homemade individual
pizzas!! They were
yummy - but we're never
letting Gina use the stove
again!!!
Our night finished off
talking about discipleship
- finding where Jesus
shows us how to be
disciples in the Gospels -
learning about the Year of
the Eucharist - praying
together - and finishing
off the night being
disciples by praying
together in front of the
Blessed Sacrament! We now know that WE are His disciples
and will pray and spread His news everywhere we go!!
MINISTERIO HISPANO
E-Share – WHAT IS IT!
E-Share is St. Pius X Parish’s electronic funding of your weekly, Holy Day, and monthly Golden Touch contributions. With
E-Share, you fill out one form, letting us know the frequency, dollar amount, and date to begin your withdrawals; then attach a
voided check. This way your contribution stays consistent throughout the year and helps your parish meet its monthly expenses and
helps you maintain your budget. If you would like to contribute through E-Share rather than use envelopes, please fill out the form
and return it by mail, in the Parish Business Office mailbox, or in the Sunday collection basket.
Please prayerfully consider enrolling in E-Share to enhance your stewardship giving. If you have any questions or concerns, please
call Mary Jane Tadda at the Parish Business Office, 630-627-4526.
