At approximately 4,300 square feet, this $2 million 2007 LuxuryHome-A-Rama home is big to be sure. The kitchen is also built on a grand scale, with ceilings that soar to 18 feet. Because of the high ceilings found throughout the first floor, thedesign of the kitchen required cabinetry that would draw the eye up, and that would match the scale ofthe room. Anything less than large would seem dwarfed by the massive room.About the Photos: Instead of incorporating two islands into this space, one gigantic island was constructed so that whilethe homeowners are cooking or doing dishes they can interact with family or guests who are gathered there. Theelevated area in the middle hides the sink on the backside of the island. Perhaps most striking is the perimetercabinetry, custom constructed with Alder wood in a dark truffle finish. A recessed arch over the mantel hood adds visualinterest, as does the glass and stone tile backsplash behind the 60-inch Wolf range. The island is maple wood with alight Portobello hazelnut finish, and has an extra thick granite countertop. On the Cover: Designers Lori Feldman of Carmel Kitchen Specialists and Jenn Couch of Daltile.Continues on next page 4Fantastic Kitchens Fall 2009 7

fantasticNew Home CompletedAugust 2007factsPriorities for this KitchenThis home was purchased prior to the Home-A-Rama, so the homeowners were veryinvolved in the selections and design. They really enjoy cooking from scratch andentertaining, so the 60-inch Wolf range, 36-inch Wolf cooktop and additional Wolfoven were priorities. Family is also very important, so they wanted to create a roomthat felt welcoming, encouraging everyone to gather. The large island creates theperfect place for family and guests to congregate.ChallengesWhile the room definitely feels very big and open, there is limited wall space toincorporate many appliances – including the 60-inch Wolf range and the separateWolf cooktop and oven. The objective was to design the space so that the kitchenitself is appreciated; so that you don’t first notice the appliances. Therefore, theextra cooktop was concealed by tucking it into the side cabinetry, bringing themain focus of the room to the range area, with its beautiful hood. Taking advantageof the ceiling height, the cabinets rise 12 feet at the crown. They are veryfunctional, allowing plenty of storage, while making a grand statement.Designer’s Thoughts“The island is a wonderful work space. It’s very useful– with two sinks, a big prep area and plenty of room formany people to sit. The center of the island wasdesigned to be raised, adding interest, and the island’shuge 6x6-inch legs anchor this piece of furniture, adding to the scale of the room.”– Lori Feldman, Carmel Kitchen Specialists“This kitchen is very French Eclectic. It has very clean Lori Feldman of Carmel Kitchenlines and a bit of a rustic touch found in details like the Specialists and Jenn Couchfloor, which is a hand-scraped hickory wood. Theof Daltile.mirrored fronts on the cabinet doors give the roomadditional brightness. Do Your Kitchen BecauseIt has been said 10,000 times: Remodeling your kitchen will bringa return on your investment. A 2008-2009 Cost Vs. Value reportfrom Remodeling Magazine states that the national average costrecouped from a major, mid-range kitchen remodel is 76%.But what hasn’t been stressed is that until you decide to sell, you getto enjoy that new kitchen and what better place in the home to do so.Kitchens are now the family room and current trends show more familyfriendlylayouts so that everyone can be in the same room, at the sametime, and not be crowded. A quick read of this issue of FantasticKitchens shows plenty of examples of great kitchen planning. And youcan see hundreds more by viewing FantasticKitchensOnline.com.If you are just beginning to think about remodeling your kitchen, thefirst advice is simple: plan, plan, plan.Good design comes with a great plan. It takes thoughtful preparationand while a bit complex, it’s also exciting. A kitchen remodel is a biginvestment, so know how much you are willing to spend and plan aheadon the layout and design features. If you do, it will be easier to manageyour budget and completion date. Keep in mind that hardware, paintand wall coverings can easily be updated to reflect the latest trends, butmake sure your big purchases like cabinetry, countertops and appliances are something youcan live with for years.Next, Think About the Way You Live. Your new kitchen design shouldbe based on the way your family lives. How many people will be in thekitchen at one time? In addition to cooking, will you use your kitchenfor dining, entertaining or homework? Does anyone in your family havespecial needs? Do you need a lot of storage? Prepare an inspirationfolder of ideas you’ve seen in magazines or digital pictures you’ve takenof elements you like. You can view more than 200 kitchens completedin the last three years by visiting FantasticKitchensOnline.com. Eachkitchen can easily be printed via your home computer. The more youshare with your kitchen design specialist, the easier it will be for themto get that sense of your family’s lifestyle.Thirdly, think about Your Personal Style. When selecting your kitchencabinets, are you traditional, contemporary or somewhere in-between?Manufacturers offer hundreds of door styles and accessories. Beforeyou head to your local supplier, it’s important to know your style so yourdesigner can help create a unique, customized look. Think about whatappeals to you – styles, finishes, colors. From a practical standpoint, review your priorities – your must haves against your target budget.Fourth, Pay Attention to Detail. It’s the little things that make a bigRob Klein, owner of Conceptual Kitchens & Millwork, saysthe first question he asks every couple who talks to himabout kitchen design is simple: Do they plan to enjoy thekitchens less than five years, or more than five years. The question makes sense, says Klein, because if less than five the homeowner isusually concerned about whether their investment can be recouped. He suggests thehomeowners do a check of the neighborhood to see the rate of house appreciation. If more than five years, it changes his thinking, says Klein. It will influence howhe plans the traffic flow, and his recommendations on what appliances they shouldbuy, such as a range, or whether a Sub-Zero should be integrated, built-in, or freestanding.Klein says he also keeps an eye on the things that appear to be more of a fad, such as specialty appliances or even a TV. He said he rarely recommends a TVbecause the technology changes so much. One other bit of advice from Klein: As much as you should plan your kitchen onwhere you want people to be, it’s equally important to note where they should notbe. Everyone in the same place at the same time is not a good idea, he stresses.– To reach Rob Klein at Conceptual Kitchens and Millwork call 317-846-2090.www.conceptualkitchens.com10 Fantastic Kitchens Fall 2009

You Want To“People are looking to invest in themselves,” saysJeff Reed, owner of Carmel Kitchen Specialists. “Inthis time period, let’s face it, they can’t just necessarily move. Their houseisn’t worth as much as it was a year ago, but they want to update thekitchen. And they want features. Used to be people thought you had tomove to get new features, but they really don’t. Sure you may beconstrained by certain things, such as ceiling height, but the cost usuallyisn’t as much as one might think.”Reed says that literally millions of options also permit a lot of room in anew kitchen budget. From cabinetry choices, to appliance packages, to amultitude of design choices, it all “kind of works together,” he adds. “Weask lots of questions about what they may or may not want. Today’s designscan be timeless – from old world looks to contemporary, as long as thingsaren’t done too outlandishly.”– To reach Jeff Reed at Carmel Kitchen Specialists call 317-844-3975.www.carmelkitchenspecialists.comdifference. Beautiful details allow you to really personalize your new kitchen. Togive your kitchen a custom-like look, consider adding decorative accents suchas molding build-ups, ornaments and corbels. Including decorative accessoriessuch as hardware, glass door inserts and under-cabinet lighting can also makethe room sparkle.Lastly, Use Space Efficiently. No matter the size of your kitchen, it’s importantto maximize space and keep things organized. Accessories such as a pot and panorganizer, or spice drawer pull-outs can be of great help.•For most people today, the kitchen is the heartWith old-world styling still a popular design in manyof their home. About the Photos: It’s all about textures and color in this kitchen. There are three woodfinishes on the rich cabinetry – the maple island is painted a red faux finish; theperimeter cabinetry is lighter heartwood maple with a warm glaze; and the refrigeratorarmoire, cooktop and hearth area is cherry wood stained dark with a matte finish for awarm feel. Notice that the island and hearth area have rich detailing, including Enkebollcorbels. The center island has a black granite countertop with sparkly flecks. Why I Will EnjoyMy New KitchenI have now joined the ranks of those who have taken my advice on these pagesfor the last five years. I remodeled my kitchen. Why?• To enhance the resale value of my home?• To provide an economic stimulus for my designer?• To make it bigger for entertaining?• So that I could have all new Sub-Zero and Wolf Appliances?• So that I can learn how to be a better cook?Truth be known, I did it because I enjoy this one room in the house wheremost everything starts, yet allows me private time in the morning for a cup offreshly brewed coffee, a glass of wine in the evening, and time to chat with my wife Debbie. Or on theweekends with my daughter Courtney, or Amy when she gets away from her job in D.C.And, yes, I admit, for the other reasons as well.My good friend, interior designer John Harrison, says that today’s kitchen is all about “lifestyle. Everythingduring the day passes through the kitchen, every activity. The kitchen is very much the center, the nucleus ofthe house. It’s where they (homeowners) want to hang out.”In any given week, I talk shop with lots of kitchen designers, builders, remodelers, appliance dealers, andarchitects throughout the midwest and midsouth U.S. And with husbands and wives in our applianceshowroom in Mason. The refrain is the same as that chimed by Mr. Harrison. People are still buying, they stillwant the best. Despite the economy, the kitchen is rarely compromised. The “Wow” factor still rules.I’ve worked I think a very smart and logical way in my 23 years in this business. First, by listening.Consumers will buy what you have if you’ve heard what it is that they want.Second, by delivering beyond expectations. Homeowners want, and deserve, a fantastic experience.I’ve published Fantastic Kitchens now for six straight years. In nearly every story – more than 200 so far, thehomeowner gives testimonial to not only how great their new kitchen is to serving their needs, and theirlifestyle, but to how much they enjoy their appliances. Imagine that! They are calling out by name their Sub-Zero refrigerator, and their new favorite toy, often a Wolf 48-inch dual fuel range. And they are buying theaccoutrements: warming drawers, double wall ovens, wine storage units, under-counter refrigeration drawers. All of these, they said, they wanted. Can you name another product in the house where the brand name is so well remembered – so fondly?I am proud of the brands my company represents. I am happy that my family and friends get to share andexperience our new kitchen at home. And I am grateful that my customers like what I sell.Life is pretty good if you let it be.FantasticKITCHENSis published by John Tisdel FineAppliances, Cincinnati, OhioJohn Tisdel is the authorized Sub-Zero,Wolf, ASKO and Faber appliancedistributor in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky,Tennessee, western Pennsylvania and WestVirginia.•To Visit Our National Showroom:Cincinnati7177 Central Parke Blvd.Cincinnati, Ohio 45040Tel. 513-339-0990Please visitwww.TisdelFineAppliances.com•Fantastic Kitchens Magazine is producedby Maverick Productions, Cincinnati, Ohio.Tel. 513-708-3849Designed by Ginger Goetz,RVGP Photo+Graphics, Inc.•See 250 Kitchens Now!John TisdelPresident, John Tisdel Fine AppliancesFantastic Kitchens Fall 2009 15

This home is set in the countryside, surroundedby pastures, a creek and beautiful trees. It feels like aEuropean Villa or Chateau, with architectural details that are over-scaled, yetsimple, explains Kitchen Designer Kristin Okeley. “The kitchen is situatedbetween the hearth room, dining room and breakfast nook. I felt that weneeded boundaries for this room to set it apart from the other spaces it adjoins, and that it needed a very large focal point in order to achieve balance with thefireplaces in the adjacent rooms.” Kristin said that in order to achieve this, shedesigned two centralized columns to tuck the outer island into, and added alarge mantel hood in the cooking zone. This functional kitchen is circular innature, with more than ample counter space and storage in each of theworking zones.About the Photos: Going into the project, Joseph knew exactly what kinds of appliances hewanted – they had to be professional grade – with a Wolf rangetop and double wall oven, andthe Sub-Zero Pro48 Refrigerator / Freezer. They have really grown tolove the area where they are raising their family. Our Objective for the KitchenI wanted a pretty kitchen, and Kristin not only creates beautiful kitchens but she tooka space that was not perfectly symmetrical and made it useable. I cook every night forthe family, so we need and appreciate that everyday functionality. This is not a showkitchen. Whatever I need is right at my fingertips. For entertaining, we wanted anopen plan. The kitchen is spacious enough for everyone to congregate. This is myfavorite space in the house.Second IslandThe second island is tiered. Behind it is the family room where the television islocated, so we designed the seating so that the kids can sit at the island, eat andwatch TV at the same time. How Our Kitchen Has Improved Our LifestyleIt definitely makes it easier for us to hang out together as a family – the kitchen andthe great room is basically one big room, and this is where we live.Designer’s Thoughts“The neutral color palette of this kitchen creates a soft blendedfeeling, set against the backdrop of the strong architecture. About the Photos: This kitchen is very majestic; the size simply takes your breath away when you enter it, accentuated by the large trusses that reach all the way through the kitchenand hearth room, and the chandeliers hanging from the peaks of the high ceilings. In the kitchen, the hood soars 15 feet of the 18-foot ceiling, to meet the scale of the room. Thecabinetry is hand-carved of Alder wood with magnificent detail to match the design elements of the home. Notice that the corner cabinets and their crown molding are curved. AFleur-de-lis design is carved on the spice cabinets flanking the range, and the hood has a large medallion carving that resembles a shield or coat of arms, giving a very regal feelto the room. Acanthus leaves, historically popular, are found in many of the carvings. The perimeter and inside island cabinetry is a butterscotch color, while the second island isblack, with a hard rub-off that makes it look antique. A television is recessed in the end of the second island so that the children can easily view it from the nearby banquette. Acoffee center is located to the left of the Sub-Zero refrigerator / freezer that are located in their own armoire. The walls are a warm gold color with a stucco texture.26 Fantastic Kitchens Fall 2009

It has all of the amenities that new homes offer, as well as thecustom touches found in older construction. Design, Inc., focusing on residential architectural andinterior design; Jane, homemaker and mother.New Home CompletedOctober 2008How We Use Our KitchenJane does a tremendous amount of cooking, making gourmet-like meals every night. We also entertain clients here. So we need functionality. Having the two giganticislands gives the look that we desired in the house, along with the functionality. Theisland closest to the range is used in everyday cooking, and the other is used forentertaining – serving as a bar or buffet. We even placed the microwave in the sideof the first island so that the boys can participate in creating meals.Best BuysThe Wolf dual fuel range is amazing. We have owned a couple of commercial rangesin the past and this is, by far, the best one that we have had. It cooks very evenly,no matter how large or small the skillet. I also like the separate simmer setting. TheSub-Zero refrigerator and freezer are the best appliances that we have ever owned. The temperature control is very accurate, and we love the space configuration – it’samazing how much food we can fit in there.Reaction to the KitchenEven some of the most jaded homeowners that we know – those who have looked athundreds of new homes – are wowed by this kitchen.Designer’s Thoughts“We designed the kitchen to be grand, but to also feel warm and cozy. The hearthroom and kitchen are one big room, with trusses extending all the way through, featuring a limestone fireplace that extends up the center of the cathedral in thehearth room, and a giant mantel hood on the opposite side, in the kitchen. Thedetailed hand-carved cabinetry found in the kitchen adds to the look of the home.”– Stephen Goldberg, S.B.G. Design“All of our cabinetry is hand carved to have an Old World feel.Instead of having toe kicks and standard molding under thecabinets, we put all of ours on feet so they look like the fine piecesof furniture they are. They resemble something out of a castle orchateau. We carve each of our pieces to give a very unique, personalized look.”– Les Moore, Chateau DesignsWho Did It?Residential Architect & Interior Designer: Steve Goldberg, S.B.G Design, Inc.,www.sbgdesigninc.com, Phone: 317-582-1430 • Custom Cabinetry: Les Moore,Chateau Designs, Phone: 317-292-7055, www.chateaudesignsllc.com • Builder:Steve Moed, SLM Homes • Countertops: Lapidus Granite, from Custom Floors• Backsplash & Flooring: Travertine, from Custom Floors • Hardware: from ChateauDesigns • Plumbing: Copper farm sink • Lighting: Indiana Lighting • MajorAppliances: Sub-Zero 36-inch fully integrated All Refrigerator and Sub-Zero 36-inch fully integrated All Freezer. PRESORTED STANDARDU.S. POSTAGEPAIDCincinnati, OHPermit No. 2922WHY INVEST IN A SUZERO:DUAL REFRIGERATIONSub-Zero Inc., with it’s new built-in line has pioneered and perfected dual refrigeration –a feature that dedicates separate compressors and evaporators to the refrigeratorand the freezer. The benefit? Sub-Zero keeps fresh foods fresher longer. Some points to consider:■ Because each compartment has a dedicatedcompressor, no air, moisture or food aroma passesbetween the two of them.■ Ideal humidity is another benefit of Dual Refrigeration, which supplies chilly, humid air to keep fresh foods fresh, and frigid, dry air to shield frozen foods from freezer burn.■ Because two compressors share the work, each does itsjob with minimal effort, which saves energy. Even the largestrefrigerator consumes less power than a 100-watt bulb.So where is the value for you, the consumer?A Sub-Zero keeps fresh foods fresher longer, up to twiceas long as competitive products. So while Americans wastean average of $728 per year in spoiled food, the Sub-Zeroowner can be happy knowing that this is one statistic theywon’t be a part of.To Find Out More: SubZeroFresh.com
