HISTORY1964: The Norfolk Area Medical Center Authority is established for the planning anddevelopment of a medical school in an effort to improve the availability and quality ofregional health care.1969: The Eastern Virginia Medical School Foundation is organized by volunteercommunity leaders in active support of the medical school.1972: Eastern Virginia Medical School surpasses its $15 million fundraising goal, anecessary step toward receiving provisional accreditation.1973: Eastern Virginia Medical School is provisionally accredited and accepts its charterclass of 24 students.1974: Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine is established to coordinateresidency training at regional hospitals. This community approach provides adiverse medical education and improves the quality of health care services inHampton Roads.1975: The Norfolk Area Medical Center Authority is renamed the Eastern VirginiaMedical Authority for its active role in providing health care for the entire region.1976: Eastern Virginia Medical School receives full accreditation by the LiaisonCommittee on Medical Education (LCME) and graduates its first class.1987: The Eastern Virginia Medical Authority is renamed the Medical College ofHampton Roads to reflect its regional structure and academic development.1991: The Virginia General Assembly revises the medical school charter, naming theBoard of Visitors as the governing body.1993: Eastern Virginia Medical School celebrates its 20 th anniversary and launches TheEVMS Campaign for the Next Century, the first comprehensive fundraisingcampaign in the school’s history.1997: In response to the increasing emphasis on health professions in health careeducation, regulation, and delivery, the Office of Health Professions Programswas established to administer a broad variety of health professions programs atEastern Virginia Medical School.2002: The Virginia General Assembly revises the medical school charter, changing theschool’s name to Eastern Virginia Medical School.2008: The Virginia General Assembly revises the medical school charter, changing someof the Board of Visitors appointments made by the Medical School Foundation toappointments made by the Governor, the Senate and the House of Delegates.2008: The School of Health Professions is created to administer the various allied healthprofessional programs at Eastern Virginia Medical School.3
