Debbie Hill has experienced just abouteverything in her 27 seasons as the headcoach at William and Mary, but the 2005season will give her something she has neverseen in her tenure: a seven-member seniorclass. The last time the College had a seniordominatedteam, (2001), four seniors ledthe way as the Tribe ran roughshod throughthe Colonial Athletic Association en routeto a 22-6 record (11-1 in CAA play), theprogram’s eighth CAA Championship andthe first NCAA Tournament appearance inschool history. Hill believes history couldrepeat itself — if the team reaches its potential. The College lost just one player to graduationand returns 13 from last season’s 15-12squad that finished in a tie for fifth place inthe CAA. The 13 returnees have experiencedthe night-in, night-out battles the league hasto offer, and as a result, the team now knowswhat it takes to win and has set its sights tonot only qualify for the tournament for thefirst time since capturing the CAA title in2001, but to host it as the top seed.Hill will have 17 players at her disposal,a luxury she has had only one other time, and the depth and experience of those 17players will be a factor for the Tribe’s successthis season. In addition to the seven seniors, the roster features four juniors, two sophomoresand four freshmen. The strength of this year’s team willcome in the form of the largest senior classin school history, seven women who havecombined to play 1,539 games in their careers. All seven have helped the programsteadily increase in wins as they gained experiencesince their freshman year in which theteam finished 7-22. A 10-17 record followedas sophomores and last season’s 15-12 finishhas set the stage for bigger things to come in2005.As Hill enters her 28th season in Williamsburg, she will hope to reap the benefitsof seeing her one-time youngsters emerge asthe best in the CAA.Three of the seven seniors will serveas team captains. Middle blockers MeganEisenman and Carly Huffman, as well as libero/defensivespecialist Erin Simmons willlead the team on and off of the court.Middle BlockersHill will have plenty of depth at the2005 Season OutlookSenior tri-captain Erin Simmonsmiddle blocking position, as the Tribe returnstwo of the CAA’s top three leaders intotal blocks. A blend of leadership, experienceand youthful aggression will combineto give the College the most formidablefront line in the conference, a group that ledthe league in total blocks per game in 2004.Huffman, the lone holdover from the2001 CAA Championship team, is a cocaptainfor the second straight year and isthe most experienced player on the roster. The Simi Valley, California product is inher fifth year in a Tribe uniform, as she wasgrouped into the senior class after suffering adevastating knee injury five matches into the2002 season that ended her year. After a year of adjustment in 2003,Huffman returned to form from her 2001CAA Co-Rookie of the Year season in 2004,as she was one of the most dominant blockersin the CAA, finishing third in the leaguewith a 1.27 blocks per game average to goalong with 122 kills. Huffman brings a greatcompetitive fire to match a high intensitylevel and combines an intimidating forceat the net with a strong offensive attackingthreat. The team has a true defensive stopperin senior Caitlin Geraghty, who returns asthe most formidable blocker in the CAA afterdominating the net during the first threeyears of her career.Geraghty posted a league-best 1.43blocks per game average, a figure that was36th in the final NCAA statistics. She isdescribed by Hill as a “coach’s dream whocan be an even more dangerous blocker thisseason.” Posting 126 total blocks (113 assisted,13 solo), Geraghty broke a 12-year-oldschool record when she registered 14 blockassists against George Washington.A tremendous athlete, the King’s Park,New York product had an outstanding springand added a jump serve to her arsenal whichwill make her a more dangerous player.Eisenman led the team in virtually everyoffensive category, and the coaching stafffeels they can expect the same, if not more, from her this season.A second-team All-CAA and all-stateselection, Eisenman was the first Tribe playersince 2001 to earn a postseason honorfrom the CAA after she finished third in theleague with a .339 hitting percentage andposted 180 kills in 77 games. A player witha quiet demeanor, the Eden Prairie, Minnesotaproduct brings a contagious level ofintensity and firepower onto the floor.Sophomore Megan McInnes and freshmanMolly Bohman round out the middleblocking corps. McInnes saw action in 11games and posted seven block assists as afreshman. She has improved her game radicallydue to her tremendous work ethic, andhas been earmarked by the coaching staff asthe middle blocker of the future.Bohman joins the Tribe from Scottsdale,Arizona where she fashioned a stellar preparatorycareer, leading Seton Catholic HighSchool to a record of 93-4. A player withgreat savvy, Bohman works hard and willbe counted on to add depth to the blockingcorps.SettersHill must replace three-year starter AmyOwens, the lone senior on last year’s team, but two talented athletes are in line to fill hershoes at setter.Junior Natalie King and freshman KimMount will orchestrate the Tribe offense in2005, and Hill feels very comfortable withboth players.King has been in the Tribe program fortwo seasons and will begin her junior year asa leader of the Tribe offense. The Stockton,California product had a tremendous springand the coaching staff is very excited abouther potential. She has appeared in 90 gamesin her career and has posted 516 assists.Mount joins the College from RedwoodHigh in Corte Madera, California, and Hill2 • 2005 William and Mary Volleyball www.TribeAthletics.com

Senior tri-captain Megan Eisenmancalls her “one of the biggest recruits we haveever had.” Mount handed out 461 assists as asenior and brings intelligence and a tremendouslevel of intensity. Extremely athletic,Mount has tremendous hand-eye coordinationand Hill has no worries about handingher the keys to the offense if the situationarises.Outside/Opposite/Right Side HittersThe hitting positions are the biggestquestion marks on the team, but Hill hasplenty of experience and depth which willprovide a wide-open competition once preseasonpractice begins.Senior Megan Hector had a breakoutseason in 2004, posting 121 kills and 18total blocks. Gaining valuable confidence,Hector had a tremendous spring and couldemerge as one of the Tribe’s most dangerousoffensive players.Senior Mandy Mayo leads the outsidehitting corps and will be one of the team’sprimary outside threats this fall after a strongjunior campaign in which she logged 187kills, including a pair of 20-kill matches. One of three Virginians on the roster,Mayo had a solid spring in which she cutdown on her errors and became more consistentin developing her all-around game.Junior Sarah Long was one of the toprookies in the league two years ago, and herplay as a sophomore in 2004 moved her intoa bigger role in the Tribe’s plans in 2005.Long posted 218 kills and reached doublefigures in kills 11 times in 2004. A very2005 Season Outlookcoachable athlete, Long possesses all of thetools to be one of the team’s top offensivethreats.Junior Christi Moot enjoyed a finesophomore campaign, logging 56 kills, 137digs and 12 total blocks. She tied her 2003kills and surpassed her digs totals by two inthe first match of the year, posting nine killsand 11 digs in a loss at Virginia, then recordedher first career double double with13 kills and 17 digs one match later. Oneof the hardest working players Hill has everbeen around, Moot has the biggest heart andmost desire on the team. She will fight fortime at either the outside, right side or defensivespecialist positions.Senior Kate Woffindin enjoyed a breakthroughcampaign as a junior in terms ofself-confidence, and as a result, she could bethe Tribe’s most dangerous offensive weaponthis season. Woffindin has a very dangerousjump serve and worked hard on her techniqueduring the spring season. She posted174 kills and 29 service aces in 69 games lastseason.Sophomore Kelley Kaplan rounds outthe hitting corps, and she made good stridesin the spring as she continued to develop. She has the potential to bring great firepowerand add depth to the offense.Williamsburg product Jill Nowadly willcontribute depth to the outside hitting positionin her first collegiate season. A WalsinghamAcademy standout, Nowadly served asa ball-girl for the Tribe as a youngster andwill don the Tribe uniform in 2005. One ofthe best players to come out of the Williamsburgarea, Nowadly is very technically soundand will develop into a solid player as shegains experience at the collegiate level.Libero/Defensive SpecialistsFour athletes with tremendous abilitywill vie for libero/defensive specialist spots, and Hill has depth and experience alongwith youthful talent that will add depth tothe defense.Simmons returns for her final season asone of the top defensive players in the CAA.The San Jose, California product has 886digs in her career after setting a school recordwith 423 digs as a junior, which was222 more than she had as a sophomore. Her4.36 digs per game was third in the CAA.A competitive and intense player, Simmonshad surgery on both of her legs after playingin pain for three seasons and the only questionis how quickly she can recover.Junior Kathleen Hawley will team withSimmons to give the Tribe a solid defensivelineup. Hawley totaled 232 digs in 94 games, and also tallied 24 service aces. A player withtremendous desire, Hawley brings a mentaltoughness to the game and refuses to give into her opponent.Freshman Jo Sotto joins the Tribe fromSan Diego and she is cut from the samemold as Simmons. A fearless player, Sottohas good range and is a scrappy competitor.Nowadly could also compete for time in thisrole.Senior tri-captain Carly HuffmanThe ScheduleThe Tribe will play 13 of its 30 matchesat home, but the first six will be on theroad.A new NCAA rule allows the season tobegin prior to September 1st, and the Collegewill use that to its advantage as it opensthe season on August 26th with a match atWinthrop. The addition of Northeastern and GeorgiaState to the CAA expands the league to10 teams. The conference schedule will stillfeature the double round robin format, withevery team playing each opponent twice, once at home and once on the road. The expansionwill also increase the CAA Tournamentfield from four to six.www.TribeAthletics.com 2005 William and Mary Volleyball • 3

William and Mary VolleyballWilliam and Mary Volleyball: “It’s Not Just A Game, It’s A Way Of Life.”When a student-athlete commits to play volleyball at William and Mary, shebecomes part of a very special program. First of all, the College is rich in tradition. For over 300 years, W&M has been in the business of education and is the secondoldestinstitution of higher learning in the nation. W&M’s noble roots go back toits charter from England. The volleyball program also boasts a proud past. For the last 27 years, headcoach Debbie Hill has guided its fortunes with a record of 520 wins and 367 losses.Hill’s greatest achievement, however, is not her winning percentage on the courtbut her impeccable graduation rate among her student-athletes. Volleyball playerswho progress through the William and Mary program not only compete in a DivisionI setting but also receive one of the finest educations in the country. In 1995,the volleyball team ranked No. 1 among all William and Mary teams in GPA withan average above 3.45 for the academic year, winning the AVCA Team AcademicAward in the process.W&M graduates span the continuum of professions. A glimpse at the rosterof volleyball alumnae on the following page confirms this diversity. Physicians andarcheologists, computer analysts and corporate bankers, lawyers and teachers, veterinariansand business executives, biologists and chemists, coaches and researchers— the list is varied yet they all share a common bond: W&M volleyball.Life at William and Mary is more than balancing academics and athletics.Tribe athletes also take advantage of numerous volunteer activities, and they havethe opportunity to join sororities and participate in intramurals. Many have beenactive in Housing Partnership projects. Others have helped with the campus day careprogram, the Muscarelle Museum, or Big Brother/Big Sister programs. Whatever theinclination, the athlete is encouraged to expand her horizons and develop individually. At William and Mary, volleyball is time-consuming and requires dedication— but not at the expense of educating the whole person.W&M volleyball players represent an eclectic blend of talents. Some athletescould have played in top 20 programs but opted to focus on their academic goals.Other players are walk-ons who have passed up scholarship opportunities to attendW&M. Although W&M may not be a top 10 program, that does not eclipse theexperience of playing in the “big time.”In addition, the Tribe has been tremendously successful at the conferencelevel as evidenced by eight Colonial Athletic Association championships. The teamhas also seen time in the national spotlight with its first appearance in the NCAAVolleyball Tournament in 2001.The William and Mary volleyball program has a track record of producingsuccess both as a team and individually — as evidenced by the list of accolades onpage 20.www.TribeAthletics.com 2005 William and Mary Volleyball • 19
