www.angusahead.com | 3Welcome to <strong>Monifieth</strong>Welcome to <strong>Monifieth</strong> –a town and former police burghof <strong>Angus</strong>. It is situated on theNorth bank of the Firth of Tayon the East Coast, the fifthlargest town in <strong>Angus</strong>.To the west side of the town there is the Dighty Water, whichis known as a “burn”. At least two mills are known to haveexisted beside the burn which are now demolished.<strong>Monifieth</strong>’s war memorial is situated on Maule Street,towards the town centre. The memorial was dedicated in1921 and was built by Charles Soutar. The design includes asculpture of an angel warrior figure with a sword and laurelwreath.<strong>Monifieth</strong> has two golf courses – The Medal and TheAshludie. The Medal course was used as a qualifying coursefor the Open Championship in 2007. The Ashludie Course,next door to the Medal, is a shorter but entertaining andpleasurable course to play. There areseveral ways to reach the A92: including the B962,which links to the A92 at the Ardestie junction;Victoria Street, which links to the A92 at theEthiebeaton Park roundabout; and via Grange Roadat the West Grange Road roundabout. The othermain route from <strong>Monifieth</strong> is the A930 which leadswest to Dundee via Barnhill and Broughty Ferry andeast to Carnoustie.<strong>Monifieth</strong> Beach<strong>Monifieth</strong> Beach is a long sandy beach with some rocksat low tide. The beach front has also been revitalisedwith a new children’s play area. The Blue Seaway wasdeveloped and opened in 2003 and incorporates anadventure play ground, skate park, putting and bowlinggreen and tennis courts. The beach also boasts asheltered bay and is very popular for water sports.Keep Scotland Beautiful recently announced that five<strong>Angus</strong> beaches will fly a Seaside Award flag above theirsands this year, including new award winner <strong>Monifieth</strong>!The beach is one of the best locations on the east coastof Scotland for windsurfing and water sports.Did you know?The Laws Estate near <strong>Monifieth</strong> is an ancient estate datingback to medieval times. The Mansion was demolished inthe 1960’s.Trains are operated by First Scot Rail on theEdinburgh to Aberdeen line. There is at presentonly a token service, stopping only once a day eachway at <strong>Monifieth</strong> Station which is a short walk tothe main shopping area.Buses are operated by Stagecoach Strathtay ontheir Arbroath to Dundee route operating on aregular basis with most stopping at bus stops alongthe main A930 road. Additional services alsooperate in the town serving the rural areas.The nearest airport is located in Dundee. DundeeAirport is a regional airport which offers regularcommercial flights to London City, Belfast andBirmingham Airports.
