Your Children are Our BusinessAfter raising three energetic kids – a boy and two girls - Sally and her husbandGary began the Albemarle Ballet Theatre with a commitment to work withchildren.Gary coached baseball and their children for fifteen years and was presidentof C.B. Baker 16 - 18 Y.O. League for five years. In addition to playing baseballwith Peachtree in Crozet, whereGary also coached, Nicky andVeronica often ran the concessionstand with Sally. All three kidsswam for the Crozet Gators andthe girls swam year-round forCYAC. All of the kids’ activitieswere family outings where Sallyand Gary volunteered. As the retreat for neighborhoodchildren, their home offeredunconditional love and supportfor all of their kid's friends as asafe place to play, dance, sleep and eat. Many weekends found the Hart homefilled with sleeping bags and their kitchen filled with children eating stacks ofSally's pancakes and waffles. Before opening ABT, Sally partnered with the North Branch School to providedance classes in Afton. Many of Sally's students received need-basedscholarships. She chauffeured many to and from the school or back to theHart home where they waited for their parents to pick them up after work. These experiences led the Harts to their mission of establishing a dance homefor our community’s future women and men in the Albemarle-Charlottesvillearea. "We see more to dance than just buns and tights, we see your childrenas the future."

What We Do and How and We Do It“I am extremely selective about the instructors we hire. In addition toprofessionalism and teaching ability, I have a high standard for the type ofpeople our instructors are. I expect them to lead your children the way youwant us too.” – Sally Hart, DirectorQuality dance instruction imparts good habits aswell as preventing bad habits that often lead to injury. We select instructors with strong dance backgroundsand dance company experience. They teach correcttechnique, cross training, proper use of anatomy, dramatic ability and encourage a healthful lifestyle. We teach more than dance. Beyond grand jetés andpirouettes, your children learn self-confidence. Wehelp your child develop a good self-image with a healthy understanding andappreciation for their bodies.Bringing out your child’s individuality is important to us. Our instructors areempathetic, compassionate and inspiring. Our policies eliminate destructivenegative behaviors and reinforce positive individual and team skills. We are role models too. Children imitate their teachers, how they behave, speak, dress and more. So we take our roles responsibly and earnestly."Sally is a gifted teacher, especially in her ability to see each dancer's strengthsand weaknesses. With a wonderful sense of humor, yet genuine respect, sheencourages and challenges her students to reach for the best in themselves."-Kathryn WardScholarships at ABT: For families who find the expense of the arts prohibitive,we created the “Dancing Off The Streets” need-based scholarship program.ABT works with The Studio for the Performing Arts (SFTPA), a 501(C)(3) nonprofitorganization directed by Sally Hart.SFTPA’s mission is to provide need-based scholarships to local dancersfor selected programs and to produce affordable, family-oriented danceproductions. With the help of local businesses and community members, our program has provided over $60K in scholarships to nearly sixty localstudents.
