HEAD COACH JIM FARRWhen Jim Farr was hired as the head baseball coach at theCollege of William and Mary 13 years ago he was taking thereigns of a program that bore little resemblance to the club thatset or tied 17 individual and team records last season. The transformationwitnessed by the Tribe faithful under his tutelage isnothing short of phenomenal. Farr has overseen the transformationof playing games on the football practice field and homegame parking lot to residing in one of the finest collegiate baseballfacilities in the Mid-Atlantic region. From a conferenceafterthought to a team that is a perennial force in the ColonialAthletic Association. This kind of turnaround doesnʼt happenwithout a strong teacher, leader and motivator calling the shots. The last five seasons have been the finest in the history ofthe Collegeʼs program. Seven players signed professional contracts, five consecutive 30-win seasons, two years that broke theschool record for wins and William and Maryʼs first ever CAAbaseball championship in 2001, which led to the programʼs secondNCAA Tournament appearance. The 2004 season was yet another stepping stone in theTribeʼs rise to national prominence. Although the club came upshort of its ultimate goal of a conference championship, the statisticalsuccess of last yearʼs team was unparalleled. The Tribeset numerous school records including wins (37), hits (691), RBI(428), saves (11) and strikeouts (415). Farr led the Tribe out ofthe gates with a 16-3 mark prior to the start of CAA action. Asluggish middle of the season was quickly forgotten in the wakeof an eight-game winning streak to close out the regular season, including conference sweeps of James Madison and Towson. The 2003 season saw a number of firsts. Senior outfielderMichael Brown set a school record with 20 home runs as he wasthe first player in school history to be named a first-team All-American. Picher Chris Ray was selected by the Baltimore Oriolesin the third round (74th overall) in what was then the highestdraft selection in school history. In 2001, the Tribe marked its place as one of the nationʼstop programs, as it advanced to the NCAA Tournament for thefirst time since 1983, and in the process, won a then school-record35 games. Six players were named to the all-conferenceteam, the most ever for the College. Third-team All-Americashortstop Brendan Harris was selected in the fifth round of theMajor League Baseball Draft by the Chicago Cubs, and made hisMajor Leauge debut in July. A month later, he was traded to theMontreal Expos in a three-team deal that included Nomar Garciapparra.Another member from that team, first baseman MikeOʼKelly, signed a free-agent contract with the Atlanta Braves.Harris finished his career as the schoolʼs all-time leader inbatting average (.362), and he will begin the 2005 season vyingfor the third basemanʼs job with the Washington Nationals.Along with Harris, Mitch Walk earned honorable-mentionFreshman All-America honors after batting .357 on the year. Forhis teamʼs efforts, Farr was named the 2001 Virginia SID StateCoach of the Year, his first such honor.Aside from his duties as head coach, Farr focuses much ofhis practice time molding the William and Mary pitching staff. The experience and expertise that he gained in his years as aprofessional pitcher with the Rangersʼ and Giantsʼ organizationshas turned many young pitchers into top-notch professionalprospects. Eight pitchers have signed professional contracts afterhoning the craft under coach Farr. As recently as the last two MajorLeague Baseball Amateur Drafts, Ray, Bill Bray (1st round,2004) and Chris Shaver (4th round, 2004) have all been selectedin the early rounds and tabbed as top prospects by their respectiveorganizations.Brayʼs selection, the 13th overall pick, is the highest inschool history, and he earned a $1,750,000 signing bonus afteragreeing to terms. He is the schoolʼs all-time leader in saves with11.Shaver returned for his senior season after being selected bythe Tampa Bay Devil Rays with the first pick in the 24th roundafter his junior year. Shaver flourished under Farrʼs tutelage, ashe was drafted by the Chicago Cubs with the first pick of thefourth round and received a $170,000 signing bouns.4 • 2005 William and Mary Baseball

Last seasonʼs staff ERA of 4.56 came up just shy of theschool record of 4.40 which was set under the tutelage of Farrin 1993. All 11 of the single season and career records in theCollegeʼs record books were set during Farrʼs tenure at Williamand Mary.A 1978 graduate of Penn State University, Farr was draftedand signed to a professional contract by the Texas Rangers. Hepitched professionally from 1978-85 in the Rangers and SanFrancisco Giants organizations before an elbow injury ended hisplaying career. Farr reached the major league level for parts oftwo seasons, highlighted by a 2.50 ERA as a reliever with theRangers in 1982. He is one of only 12 college coaches in thecountry to have Major League Baseball experience. While earning his degree in health and physical educationat Penn State, Farr enjoyed an outstanding baseball career, earningnumerous Atlantic 10 all-conference honors. Selected in thedraft by San Francisco following his junior season at Penn State,he opted to return for his senior season and was selected by Texasthe following year. The Chicago White Sox were the first todraft Farr when they selected him directly out of high school in1974.The Athens, Pennsylvania native returned to Penn State asan assistant coach and an instructor in the College of Health andHuman Development following his professional playing days.He also completed his Master of Science in Exercise and SportScience at Penn State in 1992.A member of the Nittany Lionsʼ staff for three years, Farrmoved to Old Dominion as an assistant coach in 1988. As pitchingcoach and recruiting coordinator, his last three classes atODU were ranked among the top 25 in the country. Two of histop recruits, Jeff Ware (RHP) and Wayne Gomes (RHP) werefirst-round draft picks, and both went on to pitch in the majorleagues. Regarded as a top recruiter, Farr has developed theTribe into a legitimate CAA competitor by increasing the talentand skill level on the squad. Many of his former athletes havegone on to play in the professional ranks. Presently there are 11of Farrʼs former Tribe players in professional baseball. In 1993 Farr organized his first baseball camp at W&M.These camps have developed to the point where they now attractover 500 campers a year. The 2005 squad has 19 players thathave attended his camps. Farr also speaks at numerous clinicsthroughout the east.Farr and his wife, Susan, a registered nurse, have two daughters,Jessica (20), a junior tennis player at Longwood University, and Danielle (18), a freshman volleyball and tennins player atChristopher Newport University.Current College Head Coaches WithMajor League Baseball Playing ExperienceCoachTeam(s)Scott Bradley, PrincetonMarinersJim Farr, William and Mary RangersWayne Graham, RiceMetsTony Gwynn, San Diego State PadresVance Law, Brigham Young Pirates, White Sox, Cubs, Expos, AʼsRon Nischwitz, Wright State Tigers, Indians, MetsSteve Rodriguez, PepperdineBlue Jays, Aʼs, Pirates, Padres, MarinersEd Sprague, PacificBlue Jays, Mariners, Red Sox, PadresHEAD COACH JIM FARRFarrʼs Record at William and MaryYear Record Notes1993 24-19-1 CAA Co-Coach of the Year1994 24-23-11995 24-291996 23-251997 30-241998 24-281999 29-242000 32-252001 35-20 VA Coach of the Year2002 32-262003 31-202004 37-20Total 346-283-2www.TribeAthletics.com • 5

ASSISTANT COACH RYAN WHEELERRyan Wheeler begins his ninth year at William and Mary as one of themost respected assistant coaches in the CAA. Wheeler primarily tutors theTribe hitters, works defensively with the infield and heads up the recruitingefforts. As the hitting coach, Wheeler has groomed first team All-Americansthe past two seasons in 2003 Detroit Tigers draft pick Michael Brown andlast seasonʼs CAA Player of the Year, Chris Rahl. Brown compiled whatwas then the finest offensive season ever for the College, hitting, .423 with20 home runs and 66 RBIs, falling one RBI short of winning the CAAtriple crown. He was rewarded at the end of the year when he was namedfirst team All-CAA as well as garnering two first-team All-America selections(the first in school history). In just his second year on campus, Rahlput together a season that rivals, if not trumps, Brownʼs gaudy 2003 numbers. He tied Brownʼs mark of 20 home runs and drove in 70 runs to set aschool record. His totals for runs scored (73), hits (89), stolen bases (42)and total bases (174) all are single-season records. Rahl was named firstteamAll-America by four different organizations as well as being the firstsophomore in conference history and the first player in William and Maryhistory to be named the CAA Player of the Year.As a unit, the 2004 Tribe offense set school records in batting average(.326) and triples 37. W&M finished the year leading the nation in triplesper game, averaging 0.65.Wheelerʼs work has been highlighted on the national stage by Tribestandout Brendan Harris, who spent a portion of last season on the ChicagoCubs major league roster, before finishing the season with the MontrealExpos after a trade. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2001 MajorLeague Draft by the Cubs following a tremendous career at the College.Harris sill holds William and Mary career records for batting average(.362), doubles (59) and runs scored (185). Of the 18 major single-seasonand career offensive records for the Tribe, 16 have been notched under thewatchful eye of Wheeler.W&Mʼs infield defense has routinely been one of the finest in theCAA and in 2001 was ranked in the top-15 in the country in fielding percentage.Last season was a true testament to Wheelerʼs all around effortsas William and Mary topped the CAA in team batting average (.336) andfielding percentage (.967). His recruiting efforts have been as strong as hiswork with in the field as the incoming freshman class for 2004-05 is one ofthe deepest in recent memory and included eight early signees, the most inthe Collegeʼs history.A native of Harleysville, Pennsylvania, Wheeler is a 1994 graduateof Penn State with a degree in landscape architecture. He was a four-yearstandout on the diamond for the Nittany Lions, as well as being named aBig Ten conference scholar-athlete all four years. Senior lefthanded pitcher Chris Shaver was drafted by the ChicagoCubs with the first pick of the fourth round, giving the Tribe three pitchers whowere drafted in the first four rounds in the last two seasons. In 12 seasons at William and Mary, Farr has amassed a record of 346-283-2, nearly 29 wins per season, and he believes the winning tradition that hehas built will continue in 2005.“Offensively, we return players who had solid years, and our lineup couldbe one of the strongest and most experienced in the league,” Farr said in assessinghis team after fall practice. “Our guys have high expectations for thisyear and they were disappointed how the season ended last year. It left a badtaste in their mouths and they are ready to improve.”The Tribe returns seven starting position starters, losing only third basemanJohn Lentz to graduation. On the mound, the Tribe is very deep but inexperienced, with only the starting pitching having any collegiate experiencebeyond two seasons.“If we take care of the little things, the big things will take care of themselves, and that will lead to a successful season,” Farr said.PITCHINGTwo juniors and a senior make up the majority of the Tribeʼs experienceon the mound, and Farr must replace two of his top arms from last year, bothnow in professional baseball. Juniors Forrest Cory and Sean Sosonko, as wellas senior Jeff Dagenhart will head the rotation. Farr said that these three needto have big years if the Tribe is to succeed in 2005.“Our starting pitching will be one of our keys to a successful season,”Farr said. “If Forrest, Jeff and Sean can give us quality innings each outing,we will have a successful year. If they canʼt, we will have to rely on some good, but inexperienced arms to pick them up.”Cory has been solid for the Tribe in his first two seasons, working primarilyas the number one starter in three-game weekend series. A competitivelefthander, Cory has a career record of 16-5 and was the 2003 CAA Rookie ofthe Year and a Freshman All-American. Last season, he finished 8-3 with an5.12 ERA in 82.2 innings pitched.“Forrest is the leader of our pitching staff,” Farr said. “He has been a veryconsistent starter in his freshman and sophomore years. He puts us in a positionto win every time he takes the mound.”Dagenhart has been used primarily as a starter in his three years, and hasa career record of 12-6, including a 7-3 record with a 3.95 ERA last season andpicked up his first career save on opening day.“Jeff has made some delivery adjustments this fall, and I look for him tohave a career year in his senior season,” Farr said.Sosonko is in his third year in the Tribe program after spending his freshmanyear at the University of Evansville. The lefthander from Wycoff, NewJersey did not see any action in 2003 due to injury, but showed flashes of brillianceas the number three weekend starter last season. He finished the yearwith a 4-3 record and a 4.60 ERA in 58.2 innings pitched.“Sean is one of the best athletes on our pitching staff,” Farr said. “He is avery competitive lefthanded pitcher and I look for him to solidify our startingrotation.”In the bullpen, Farr has a good balance of right-and lefthanded pitchersfor matchup purposes, but it is a young, inexperienced group. Junior PaulKnackstedt gave the Tribe a valuable right-handed setup man last season, andalso started on occasion. He will serve in that role again this year after putting8 • 2005 William and Mary Baseball2005 Preseason All-American Chris Rahltogether a 4-0 record with a 4.91 ERA in 2004.“Paul did a great job of coming out of the bullpen as well as spot startingfor us last season,” Farr said. “He will give us valuable experience in a youngbullpen.”Freshman Devin Roberts emerged from fall practice as the most improvedpitcher on the staff, but has yet to pitch in a game. Sophomore Drew Atchison, junior Joe Kantakevich and his younger brother Patrick, a late-round draft pickby the Montreal Expos last season as a senior at Georgetown Preparatory, willall add depth on the right side. Sophomore Joe Mante, a converted catcher, worked on the mound in the fall, and he could see time in a setup role, alongwith freshman Jake Rule.“Joe Kantakevich pitched 25 solid innings for us last year,” Farr said. “Hepossesses a plus changeup and has worked very hard on his slider. He couldpitch his way into the rotation or be a mid-week starter.”Lefthanders Sean Grieve, Michael LaFleur and Pete Vernon, all freshmen, will add depth in the bullpen if they are not needed as midweek starters.Farr must find a replacement for Bray, the Tribeʼs all-time career savesleader. Sophomore Joe Roenker is slated for the duty after a solid fall practice. The lefthander from Virginia Beach is a strike thrower with good poise.“Joe had an exceptional fall and is ready to take over the closerʼs role,”Farr said. “He possesses a solid fastball and a very good slider. He has workedhard on some delivery changes in the past year and it is evident by the way heis pitching.”CATCHERSJon Rhymes moves from leftfield to catcher, where he will join seniorMike DeCarlo. Mante could see time in a late-inning defensive role, and freshmanJeff Wera will back them up. Rhymes is an athletic receiver with a quickrelease, and he gained arm strength by playing leftfield last season.“Jon moving back behind the plate will help solidify us defensively at thecatching spot,” Farr said. “Jon and Mike could possibly split time behind theplate and in leftfield.”

DeCarlo caught 52 games last season, and is a power threat with the bat.Mante has an exceptional arm that can shut down a running game. Wera couldsee time in a pinch hitting/designated hitting role.“Mike is much improved defensively behind the plate,” Farr said. “Offensively,I look for him to be a big run producer in the middle of our lineup.”POSITION PLAYERSThe Tribe returns seven of its eight starters in the field from last season, with the leftfield spot the only question mark with the move of Jon Rhymesbehind the plate. Farr feels this lineup will be very dangerous offensively, butmust get better defensively, especially up the middle. The offense will be headlinedby Rahl, who hit .389 last season with 20 home runs and stole 42 bases in46 attempts. He could move from the three spot to the leadoff spot in an effortto put maximum pressure on defenses.“We expect to be very good offensively,” Farr said. “I donʼt know if ourlineup has ever been this strong one through nine. The only missing piece willbe in leftfield, where we have a couple of guys battling for that spot. Chris Rahlcould put us on the board right away in the leadoff spot with his power or geton base and put pressure on the defense with his baserunning abilities, whichsets the tone for the rest of our lineup.”Will Rhymes, a Cape Cod League All-Star last summer, hit .388 witheight home runs to earn first-team All-CAA honors as a second baseman. He,DeCarlo and Greg Sexton, Farr says, are established middle of the lineup hitterswith the ability to drive in runs.“Will has developed and matured into one of the leaders in our program,”Farr said. “I look for him to continue the success he had last year, where he wasone of the toughest outs in the league.”Sexton, who dazzled the league as a freshman with a .356 average and aschool record 24 doubles as a first baseman, will move to third base to takeover the spot vacated by Lentz, and junior Jeff Lunardi will take over at firstbase. One of the best athletes on the team, Lunardi finished the 2004 seasonbatting .300 with two home runs and 26 runs batted in. He played three differentpositions last season, mostly as a late-inning defensive replacement, but isslated as a starter after a solid fall.“Jeff is a player that brings a lot of intangibles and flexibility to the lineup,”Farr said. “He can play anywhere on the field defensively and will providesome power and footspeed in the lineup.”Senior Kyle Padgett returns as a four-year starter at shortstop. Padgett hit.304 with seven home runs and 46 runs batted in. Defensively, he has goodhands, good range, and an above-average arm.“Padgett and Will Rhymes give us a lot of experience in the middle of thefield,” Farr said. “We need both of them to have exceptional years if we aregoing to compete for a CAA Championship.”Sexton played 23 games at third base in a part-time role but will be countedon to fill that role on a full-time basis this season. The sophomore couldbat third if Rahl leads off. He has gap-to-gap power and has the potential togenerate runs.“Greg is an outstanding young hitter that will produce runs for us in themiddle of the lineup,” Farr said. “He will be very good at third base and couldmove to shortstop if need be.”In the outfield, the only question mark will be in leftfield, where JonRhymes started 56 games last season. Farr will use a platoon system there, depending on what pitcher the Tribe is facing. Sophomore Brent McWhortercould face righthanders, as the left-handed hitter hit .444 in nine at bats lastseason. A converted infielder, McWhorter has made a smooth transition to theoutfield.DeCarlo also worked in leftfield during fall practice, and he could be asituational starter if the Tribe is facing a lefthander. Grieve, who will alsocompete for time on the mound, can play leftfield and could be used as a lateinningdefensive replacement.Terry Revere will anchor the outfield from his centerfield position. Reverestarted 52 games from that post, and hit .306 with 10 home runs and 45 runsbatted in. Offensively, Farr believes that he has the potential to hit 10 homeruns and steal 30 bases, and defensively, he covers a lot of ground and has asolid arm.“Terry possesses the skills to have an exceptional senior year,” Farr said.“I look for him to have a career year for us offensively as well as defensively.”Rahl will be the Tribeʼs rightfielder for the second-straight year. An excellentathlete, he has a solid arm and covers a lot of ground.2005 SEASON OUTLOOKJunior Lefthander Forrest Cory“Chris is coming off of one of the biggest offensive seasons I have everseen in college baseball,” Farr said. “He will need to be patient at the plate as Iexpect teams to pitch around him occasionally. I look for him to steal 50-plusbases this season and have another big year.”SCHEDULEThe 2005 schedule features 35 home games, including 20 of its first 23 atPlumeri Park, with the season opener coming February 12th against Georgetownat 1:00 p.m. The two teams will meet again the next day at the sametime.Three-game non-conference home series opponents include Rutgers (Feb.18-20), Radford (Feb. 25-27), New York Tech (March 4-6), Princeton (March11-13) and Longwood (May 13-14).Single-game home opponents include Norfolk State (Feb. 15), UNCGreensboro (March 16), Maryland Baltimore County (March 23), Liberty(April 12), VMI (April 20) and Richmond (May 12).CAA home series feature George Mason (March 18-20), Old Dominion(April 1-3), Hofstra (April 22-24) and Towson (May 20-22). Other single-game road contests come against N.C. State, Georgia Techand UNC Greensboro.“This yearʼs schedule features some very tough road games,” Farr said.“Early season games at N.C. State, Georgia Tech and UNC Greensboro, alongwith tough home series with Rutgers and Princeton will prepare us for the conferenceschedule. Tough conference series road games at Virginia Commonwealth,UNC Wilmington, James Madison and Delaware along with singlegames at Virginia and Virginia Tech will have this team prepared for end ofthe season tournament play.”www.TribeAthletics.com • 9

The 2004 Tribe baseball team had perhaps its finest season ever, postinga school record 37 wins and culminating with the selection of juniorleft-handed pitcher Bill Bray by the Montreal Expos as the 13th overallpick of the first round in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft.Bray, a two-time second-team All-CAA selection, is the first playerin school history to be drafted in the first round. He finished the 2004season with a 4-4 record and a 2.44 ERA with eight saves while strikingout 84 batters and walking just 15 in 59 innings pitched. For his career,Bray sported an 11-10 record with a school record 11 saves, while strikingout 192 batters in 148 innings pitched.“Bill is a lefthander with a power arm,” stated the Expos ScoutingDirector Dana Brown. “We see him being able to contribute out of thebullpen, but he also has the stuff to pitch in a starting role.”“This is a lifelong dream and it is a thrill to be drafted this high,”Bray said. “I am looking forward to getting my pro career started and Iam thrilled to be an Expo.”Bray agreed to terms with the Expos in July and received a $1,750,000signing bonus.Chris Shaver was also drafted, going with the first pick of the fourthround to the Chicago Cubs, one year after the Tampa Bay Devil Raysdrafted him with the first pick of the 24th round. The stock of the lefty, the oldest son of head menʼs basketball coachTony Shaver, improved greatly over the season as Shaver struck out 75and walked just 30 in 76.2 innings of work to improve from his selectionin the 24th round in 2003. His finest outing came on May 14th when hefired a three-hit complete game shutout while striking out a career-high13 batters in a 9-0 win over James Madison.Despite the strong showing in the draft from Tribe prospects, themost exciting component of Tribe baseball came from CAA and ECACPlayer of the Year Chris Rahl, who rewrote the Tribe record books ina number of categories. Selected as a first-team All-American by theNational Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Sports Weekly Magazine,Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the AmericanBaseball Coaches Association, and CollegeBaseballInsider.com Rahlbroke single-season school records in hits (89), total bases (175), stolenbases (42 in 46 attempts), and RBIs (70), and tied single season recordsin home runs (20), runs scored (73) and triples (8).2004 SEASON REVIEWRanked among the top 20 in the nation in all of those categories, Rahlwas also tabbed as a second-team All-American by Baseball AmericaThe first player in CAA history to record at least 20 home runs and40 stolen bases in the same season, Rahl batted .389 for the year. He wasalso the first player in school history and the first sophomore in leaguehistory to be named CAA Player of the Year.Freshman infielder Greg Sexton also had an outstanding year, breakingthe Tribe single-season doubles record with 24, a league high, anumber that was two short of the CAA record. Named a freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Sexton batted .356 withfour home runs and 59 RBI.Junior second baseman Will Rhymes also garnered his share of acclaim, earning a first team All-CAA and all-state honors after hitting .388with eight home runs and 35 RBI. He later earned Cape Cod LeagueAll-Star honors. With such talent, it is no wonder W&M orchestrated such a fineseason. The Tribeʼs 37 wins is the most in school history, besting the2001 CAA Championship unit that finished with 35 victories.Winning its last seven regular-season contests, including two consecutiveCAA sweeps to end the season, the Tribe secured the No. 4 seedat the CAA Tournament, but went 0-2 in the six-team field in Wilmington,NC, losing to Virginia Commonwealth and Delaware. The squadʼs offense prowess was reflected in the record books. Theteam set new marks for triples (37), batting average (.326), hits (691)and at bats (2122) and tied the record for doubles (135) . The pitchingwas equally as strong as the Tribe set a record for strikeouts (475) andtied the mark for saves (11). The Tribeʼs 37 triples led the nation.Six different players finished the year ranked nationally in severalcategories, as Rahl led the way. He finished the season ranked fourth inhome runs per game and runs per game, fifth in slugging percentage, sixth in stolen bases, ninth in triples per game, tenth in runs batted inand 49th in batting average.
