Yhe number of animals par family range from 20 to over 350,<br />
with roughly ten times the number of goats and sheq to cattle<br />
and camels. An average family owns nearly 300 goats and sheep,<br />
25 camels and 14 cattle. Populations of deeqans fluctuate<br />
seasonally and tend to concentrate around the few water points<br />
that contain water at the height of the dry season.<br />

CGDP Drilling<br />
At present there are fax wells constructed by the CGDP<br />
operating with diesel pumps, none of which have completed civil<br />
works. Water must be pumped into depressions in the ground near<br />
to the wells to allow animals xo drink. The pumps must operate<br />
for long periods to provide enough water fox animals. Three<br />
hand pumps have been installed at other wezl sites, and another<br />
three we115 are awaiting pumps.<br />
A trend towzrd agro-pastoralism has emerged, following<br />
recent vell constructfan, whereby families stake claims within a<br />
6 kilometer raeius around a we13 site. Fences are erected to<br />
protect these areas, in which cowpeas are c~ltivatad in the wet<br />
season, and animals are pastured in the dry season. Families<br />
with enclosed areas can provide themsaLves with incomes from<br />
zoweas, and forage for their animals in the dry season. Those<br />
who have not made any claixas are forced to walk their animals<br />
great distances through the fenced areas to the well site, and<br />
then back out to pasture beyond tb-- fenced land. This system is<br />
a source of conflicts, beczusc -e provides ursqyal access to<br />
water and grazing. It is the p
