Community residents sade substantial contributions during<br />

all stages oE the project. They include:<br />

- Infamation on socioeconomic conditions, well operations<br />

and pro3 ect ef f acts,<br />

- Labor and materials for drilling, canstsuction and some<br />

maintenance aperations*<br />

- Food and cash contributions during drilling and<br />

construction.<br />

- Payment of user fees on a regular basis after pump<br />

operations begin.<br />

- Coardinatlon and supervision of villager contributions.<br />

- Control af aninals around the civil works and cleaning<br />

aE the starage tank.<br />

- Procurement of diesel fvleL from WDA and other sources.<br />

An illustrative list of some of these contributions is<br />

presented In the tables below. They cover labor inputs and<br />

gifts of cash, animals and staples to work crews far drilling,<br />

pump tests and construction.<br />

The table above shows that cornunities where there was some<br />

effort by soci~l scientists and/or technical stzff trained to<br />

promote <strong>part</strong>icipation, the level of contributions in this phase<br />

of construction was nore than three times higher than in those<br />

where the CAPP approach was not used. Data available for four<br />

villages in which civil works were constructed reveals a similar<br />

pattern and Xevel of contributions-
