Drilling procedures in any one area of the country tend to<br />

be similar, For this reason, drilling forexen were shifted<br />

between the three rigs to learn different drilling techniques,<br />

Those having experience w ith mud rotary operations were shifted<br />

to the rigs using air harmer techniques and vice versa.<br />

Drillers working on mud rotary rigs were train@< in the use<br />

of different mud viscosities and in the recovery of lost<br />

circulation. Recovery of lost circulation became an extremely<br />

important factor in wells in the Central Rangelands. Drirlers<br />

working on air rotary rigs learned a ir haraer techniques wfth<br />

the use of drilling faam- Cable toof rig training was less<br />

intensive because WDA personnel were fairly well ex~erienced<br />

with this method. The cable tool equipment had been in country<br />

for some time, and the crew assigned this rig were established<br />

ir. their haSits. Attenpts were made to demonstrate how drilling<br />

cauld proceed at a faster rate, however, this effort was not<br />

uelf received.<br />

A major handicap that existed throughout the prcject was<br />

+he lack of qualified welders on the rigs. On most privately<br />

owned drilling rigs, the chief driller and usually one other<br />

person are experienced welders. Unfortunately, for reasons<br />

unknown tg the Consultantsf staff, welding was not regarded as a<br />

respected profession. Through the efforts of the project, this<br />

stigna was to a large extent renoved. Most drillers and/or<br />

assistant drillers became receptive to training in the basics of<br />

arc welding.<br />

Coincident w ith training in the art of welding, was the<br />

txeining provied in the Instzflation of casing. This involved<br />

insuring that casizg Lengths were properly measured and<br />

recorded, and That casing lengths were correcrly aligned prior<br />

to weldi~g.<br />

Before zny potentially producisg borehale can be considered<br />

a well, it m~st be adeq~ateiy developed. Development is used<br />

here to mean the renovel of the aud cake from the galls of the<br />

Sorehole in6 in <strong>part</strong>icular the area opposite the water producing<br />

zone. Xx the case of holes drilled wfth air or by cable tool<br />

~ethods, development means the removal of fines. Although<br />

eyipmsnt rox rigor~us well de-*=lopmen", was not available,<br />

drillers were trained to thoraughly clea the AsPe by either<br />

circnlati~g clean water and/or by blowing with air. Additional<br />

air zcmpressors, air 2ettizg tools, and chemicals were not<br />

avaiLa5le nor deezed necessary in xost cases.
