The Baselina Camunity S~ciocconomfc Swvey is used to collect<br />

data on papalation, the nruEber of villages, social organization,<br />

economic activities and social services such as health and<br />

education, Particular attention is given to the identification<br />

oE mter sources used by the zesiden'ks and traditional nethods<br />

of rater manage;aent. It fzcludes a section on how to draw maps<br />

of the target area (a 5 :X,zt radius around the well site) and haw<br />

to use maps to collect land use and physical. infrastructure<br />

data.<br />

Baseline data will also be obtained through a review of<br />

socioeconomic a;ld agriccltural surveys which are now available<br />

for several regions of Samalia including the Bay Region and the<br />

Central Rangelands- These surveys are sources of detailed<br />

infarmation and are the result of lengthy investigations. The<br />

appropriate se of this information w ill reduce the time and<br />

increase tho comprehensiveness of the baseline profiles.<br />

The survey should begin to get popuiatian data, and other<br />

data essential for site selection aad conmunlty <strong>part</strong>icipation<br />

activities, as soon as the pote~tial well site area is<br />

ibentified, The survey can, hauever, be completed anytime<br />

during the period in which the eysteE is under construction. In<br />

som3smities where puzping operations have started and for which<br />

baseline dsts is not available, ce incomplete, the surfey can be<br />

done retrospect ivei y ,<br />

The Baseline Household Sur~ey is adainistered to selected<br />

households, and establishes the patterzs of hoxsehold water use,<br />

the iczation ~i sources, the time required to obtain water,<br />

costs, 2nd the qdanlitfea consumed. I+ a:so Includes questions<br />

Baseline Water Pornt Surveys are conducted at sc~aral of the<br />

laest frequeltly zsed sources within the target zones.<br />

The Village Self-Assesszenr Surrey is included in the list of<br />

baseline survey foms, a2tbozgh irs major function is to<br />

szi~ulate comusity disciissio:~ and <strong>part</strong>icipation. It is<br />

basically a sizplifled version oi zhe Comu2ity Baseline Suntey<br />

to be filled in by the leaders ar.5 residents of villages in the<br />

target area. Additional testing azd research is needed to<br />

i~prove %he selz-nssessaer.2 ar;groach ar.d the reliability of the<br />

data collected by villagers.
