4HeadlineGitnang LuzonAUGUST 22, 2013EDITORIALPrice freezeYesterday’s editorial of this newspapertackled shameless abuses of some localofficials in the use of the calamity funds, which are supposed to benefit thosestricken by calamities and other emergencies.Today, we also underscore that evenprivate individuals take advantage of thepoor condition of our fellowmen who arereeling from the effects of the rains andfloods.Hoarders and greedy businessmenwho impose high prices of commoditiesthat the populace badly needed are alsoaplenty when disasters strike. They takeadvantage of the misfortunes of othersto enrich themselves by creating artificialscarcity of goods to justify the huge increasein the prices of the merchandize.Prices of food items such as instantnoodles, bread, rice, canned goods, sugarand water are among the most commonlyabused during calamities because thesesell like hotcakes. The artificial shortageof these goods further fan the demandamong the consumers who will be willingto pay extra bucks just to be able to stockup some for the rainy days. The artificial shortage often leads topanic buying among the hapless victimsof disasters who are further victimized bytheir nefarious fellowmen.Even services, like transportation, getto be abused by the providers. Goingfrom one place to another becomes costlywhen floods strike as if the roads get longerbecause of too much water saturation. It’s a good thing the Department ofTrade and Industry (DTI) is vigilant againstthese unscrupulous and enterprising individualswho only care about themselveseven if it means strangling the necks oftheir neighbors. The price freeze imposed by the DTIshould provide a little breathing room forthe victims of disasters who may haveprobably lost their valuables--or worse, loved ones--in the calamities. The Trade office, however, should ensurethat the areas where the price freezeis imposed are well covered that no fat eviltrader could escape their sight.HEADLINE Gitnang Luzon is a Daily Regional NewspaperGeneral Manager: Atty. However,it will not be a guarantee that it willperk up the passenger volume of CIA.It is not a deal-breaker for people touse Clark in flying in and out of theUpper CutAmbet LacanlaleWright on Clarkisland.First, we should consider the cultureof the Filipino, who will probablydominate the number of passengersto use Clark. Whenever someone goesabroad, the whole familywould want to join the sendoffparty. This is why weoften see jeepneys (today, though, air-conditionedvans and SUVs offer a morecomfortable choice), packedwith people and luggage“The business executive said the airportin Clark was one of the reasonshe became bullish in putting up ahuge investment in the former USmilitary base. ”bags, travelling from the provinces allthe way to Metro Manila. After their passenger took off, theway back to the province is more melodramaticand everyone in the vehiclewould just want to dose-off and fendoff the feeling of losing a member ofthe family to a solo journey in a foreignland. I bet, these families wouldnot want to travel on a train whereinthey cannot enjoy the company ofeach other before bidding their sweetgoodbyes. The same is true with those whoare fetching a balik-bayan overseasFilipino worker (OFW) from the airport.Even neighbors are tugged alongbecause a bigger welcome party ispart of our Filipino customs.Even those flying alone could beinconvenienced carrying all their luggageto the train station, getting themon board the coach, and disembarkingagain to the airport. It should focus more onthe commuting public in general tomake it more feasible, but, here liesthe issue of morestations, whichwill defeat the verypurpose of a fasttrain.Wright believes--andI do,too, now--Clarkhas the potentialto be a premier international airport, side by side with NAIA, even sans thefast train. The two airports don’t even haveto compete against each other fordevelopment because they should beboth upgraded by the government andnot one should be compromised in favorof the other.“Wherever you go in the world, thesecond airport is always the best butthe first doesn’t run out of business,”Wright said.In 2006, Wright knew biggerthings would happen for Clark. The business executive said theairport in Clark was one of the reasonshe became bullish in putting upa huge investment in the former USmilitary base.“No Filipino adviser told me to dowhat I did.
