MonumentsMiddelburg:monumental townIn the 9th century, when the Vikings made the European coasts thoroughly unsafe, three defence strongholds were built on the island of Walcheren: Domburg in thenorth, Souburg in the south and one in the middle: Middelburg. A small villagecommunity sprang up around this stronghold, and the monastery which was foundedthere in the 12th century developed into the largest in the whole region. Thanks tothe monastery and the community’s favourable position at the water’s edge, theimportance of Middelburg quickly blossomed. Middelburg was granted its officialtown charter in the year 1217.Middelburg’s first Golden Age tookplace in the Middle Ages. Starting inthe late 16th century, trading activitiesexpanded all the way to the Far East, later also to Central and South America.Middelburg gained great riches throughits powerful role in the East IndiaCompany/VOC. The citizens who sharedin this wealth and welfare had beautifulhouses built for them in prominentlocations. On your right, via Achterhet Hofplein, you get a good viewthrough to the Gothic wooden façade ofthe Sint Pieter house: it originally camefrom the Lange Delft, but has been‘stuck onto’ the side wall here. The Vande Perrehuis stands proudly on theHofplein. It is a remarkable building, with a characteristic concave mainfaçade, the house being named afterthe first owner of this former 18thcentury town palace, the wealthyVan de Perre. The Zeeland Archives areat present housed here, after the buildinghad been thoroughly renovated anda daringly-designed transparent extraspace added. Baron ChasseeVery specialMiddelburgmonuments1. The Town Hall, MarktThe first stone for a new Town Hall was laid in 1452. The work on this splendidbuilding went on for many years, under the supervision of a renowned family ofmaster builders, the Keldermans from Mechelen. The façade is richly decorated withcarvings showing counts and countesses of Holland and Zeeland. The Town Hall wasbadly damaged in 1940, when the 18th century extension in the Lange Noordstraatwas one of the parts lost. The entire complex has been exquisitely restored and it isacknowledged as one of the most beautiful town halls in The Netherlands.2. The AbbeyThe monastery which was founded here in the 12th century developed into thelargest abbey in the region. It was much thanks to this religious centre that the importanceof Middelburg grew so quickly. A lot of building and rebuilding work has beencarried out on the Abbey in the course of time. When you enter its imposing gatewayand stroll through the present-day grounds, looking at the great open courtyard, theAbbey tower de Lange Jan and the three churches, you are discovering a monumentalcompound in the centre of the town – something which is unique in our country. It isthe only abbey in The Netherlands which is situated in the town.3. Van de Perrehuis, HofpleinThe striking building, with its characteristic concave façade owes its name to the firstowner of this 18th century town palace, the wealthy regent J.A. van de Perre. The Zeeland Archives are at present housed here, after the building had beenthoroughly renovated and a modern, transparent annex added.4. Huize ‘’s Hertogenbosch’, VlasmarktAn enormous, notable residence dating from 1665 stands at Vlasmarkt 51.The classic façade is decorated with Ionic and Corinthian ornamentation. Glanceupwards and you will spy a small lookout tower on the roof, from which one couldsee the merchant ships with their rich cargoes sailing into the Middelburg harbour. These days, the house serves as a shop selling prints and engravings, run by TheoLaurentius, who is known to TV viewers for his appearances on the Tussen Kunst &Kitsch/Antiques Road Show programme.21

Teahouse5. Huis ‘Baron Chassee’, Gortstraat 30This elegant patrician’s house owes its name to a former owner, General DavidHendrick Chassé (1765-1849). The building dates from the mid-18th century andcontains a rich interior. What strikes the viewer from the outside is the extraordinarychimney stacks. The house is owned by the Hendrick de Keyser Association and was,for a long time, used as a hotel. At present, a society is one of the building’s users.6. East Church / Oostkerk, OostkerkpleinThe richly decorated Baroque, domed church dating from 1667, was the first Protestantchurch in Middelburg and is one of the (only) four domed churches in The Netherlands.A striking detail is the stone carving of a skeleton above the main entrance, a poignantreminder of man’s mortality. It is worth noting that funds to finance the building of thechurch came largely from an extra tax levied on beer and wine!7. Slot ‘Ter Hooge’, KoudekerksewegA great many manor houses were built on Walcheren during the Golden (17th) andSilver (18th) Centuries. Slot ‘Ter Hooge’, which was raised on the foundations of amedieval castle, is one of the three examples left intact in Middelburg. The manorwas rebuilt in the middle of the 18th century into the house which stands today andhas been owned by a number of well-known families. Its characteristics are the strictsymmetry, both of the building and its garden, as well as the two octagonal steppedtowers. One of the towers is a left-over from the old castle.8. Teahouse at the ‘De Griffoen’ manor house, Seissingel‘De Griffoen’ is the second example of the remaining Middelburg manor houses and, just like ‘Ter Hooge’, emerged after the rebuilding of an older set of buildings. It has astriking annex, the elegant teahouse from 1733, which has the form of a parallelogram(a four-sided plane figure, the opposite sides of which are equal and parallel toone another). During its restoration in 1967, it was given a slate and lead roof. Thebuilding is at present used as recreational space.9. Warehouses on the KinderdijkAt the same level as the 19th century Spijkerbrug/Bridge, there are four late 16th centurywarehouses. Each of the four bears the name of a beast of burden: The Elephant,The Goat, The Camel and The Mule. These most appropriate names indicate the functionof the former grain warehouses. After 1602, the warehouses were used by theEast India Company/VOC.10. Warehouses in the KuiperspoortThe gate building dates from 1586 and was bought by the Kuipersgilde/Coopers’ Guildin 1642. This was a flourishing tradesmen’s association, because barrels and tubswere extensively used as packaging in those days. The Kuiperspoort is a picturesquemeshwork of alleys, containing old warehouses, beautifully restored houses, steppedgables, hidden corners and viewing-holes. It is one of the many concealed treasuresof Middelburg.23

On the water NavigationRoundtrip in Middelburg Viewing Middelburgfrom water levelMiddelburg’s history dates back to the 9th century. Thanks to its favourable positionon the river Arne, the ‘middle’ stronghold on the island of Walcheren expanded into atrading and shipping town and became the most important transport and forwardingharbour for the Flemish hinterland. In 1405, Middelburg furthermore secured a stapleright: all goods coming in via the river Westerschelde had to be unloaded (and a taxlevied!) in Middelburg. Goods included wool from England, fine cloth from Flandersand, later, also wine from France. Middelburg was a wealthy town in those days, thehouses of eminent merchants stood proudly along the quays and, in 1452, the firststone was laid for building a new Town Hall, conspicuous and richly decorated. The town’s own trading activitiesbegan to blossom as from the end ofthe 16th century. Thanks to the activerole played by Middelburg citizens, theEast India Company/VOC was establishedin 1602, with the objective of sendingships to Asia to buy and bring homespices. The VOC expanded into amultinational and the towns where itsoffices were set up became rich.Découvrir Middelburg en bateauL’histoire de Middelburg remonte au 9ème siècle. Middelburg was one of thosetowns, ranking only second in importanceafter Amsterdam. Somewhatmore than two centuries after thediscontinuance of the VOC, there arestill many traces of that period to befound in Middelburg. One very specialway to discover a number of thehidden treasures is from water level.A tour in a round-trip boat through thehistoric heart of Middelburg will openup a part of the town as yet unknownto you, giving you a clear impressionof the rich history of a fascinatingmonumental town. The boat company – RondvaartMiddelburg – begins its daily trip atthe Kloveniersdoelen at the beginningof the Langeviele, which is one of theshopping streets leading into the towncentre. We are nowapproaching the 19th centurySpijkerbrug, one of Middelburg’s mosthandsome bridges. The name indicatesthe warehouses along the Kinderdijk.‘Spijker’ is an old Dutch word forstorehouse or shed. You get your bestview from the water of the fourmeticulously restored 16th centurywarehouses. This iswhere the chief boatswain lived and hewas responsible for both the crew andthe ships’ equipment. He was anextremely influential man, rememberingthat in those days the VOC was thebiggest employer in Middelburg. As weglide back in the direction of theSpijkerbrug, Skipper Krijn points outthe domed shape of the Oostkerk/EastChurch. This was Middelburg’s firstProtestant church, built in 1667 andlargely financed by the levying of anextra tax on wine and beer! During thetrip back through the Binnenhaven/Inner Harbour, Krijn tells us about thestately mansions, about the housewithout a door (1560) and, not to beforgotten: the narrowest house inMiddelburg. When we are nearly atthe end of the round-trip and haveagain been reminded to duck ourheads three times, we gain a view ofthe 17th century Kloveniersdoelen, built in lavish Renaissance style. Theeye-catching gable, with its twocrossed muskets, takes us back to theoriginal occupants: the KloveniersMusketeers Guild. The house is atpresent occupied by the New MusicFoundation, which organises concerts. This must surely be a well suited endingto a round-trip full of surprises!26

Art and culture Art et cultureArt and culture, because it’s fun!Middelburg takes good care of all things old. At the same time, Middelburg stands withboth feet firmly in this new era. That’s the way art and culture freaks in the whole ofWalcheren regard their regional capital: old and new, side by side. You must admit, itcreates a pleasing tension. And there is an exciting range of art and culture on offer. The Vleeshal in the old Town Hall, stunning in its Gothic style, is an internationallyknown setting for modern art.The Gothic influence seems to challengeartists in a special way and theresult is amazing. Atpresent, filmgoers are accommodated inVlissingen/Flushing.Recent work on the Abdijplein/Abbey Courtyard has made it possibleto close it off and it has been madesuitable for performances. Connoisseursare attracted to the intimate setting andcherish the ambiance. A modern operasung in this Middle Ages courtyard is agood example of ancient and modern inharmony. The Markt/Square is the perfectplace for large audiences, concertsby pop groups - especially when Bløf,the vastly popular Dutch group, is playinga ‘home match’. During theZeeland Nazomer/Autumn Festival, theAbdijplein serves as the festival’s centrefor all the happenings. The Zeeuws Museum is housed inthe Abbey, in the former living quartersof the Canon. It has a marvellous collectionof objects, furniture, wall hangingsand paintings, giving a review of morethan 2000 years of Zeeland’s history, from archaeology to modern art. Due torenovation, the museum is at presentclosed, but will reopen in 2005.28

Nevertheless, the Museum maintains itshold on public attention in the meantimeby holding short exhibitions andorganising various activities, events anddebates. You can obtain more informationdirectly from the Museum itself –tel. Galleries, studios, antiquarian bookstores and other culturalinstitutions are open from 13:00 –17:00 hrs. There is a special centraltheme for each month. You can readmore about it on the route’s website(www.kunstroutemiddelburg.nl). All theparticipating galleries can be found onthe site and that is useful, becausethere are many of them.Middelburg has a wealth of festivalsand happenings. Just to quote three ofthem: The Zeeland Nazomerfestival/Autumn Festival (theatre), MiddelburgVol-Koren (a song-banquet, alreadyheld for 4 years), the Smaek vanZeeland/Taste of Zeeland (a culinaryfestival). The choice is yours! On the Markt, you will see a buildingwith an enormous glass front. It is theDrvkkery, the result of a private initiativeby a number of bookstores inMiddelburg and Vlissingen/Flushing.The range of books and services onoffer can equal that of any similarstores in Amsterdam, The Hague,Rotterdam and Utrecht. The Zeeuws Archief/ZeelandArchives on the Hofplein are housed ina hypermodern annex to the old Van dePerrehuis. The transparent building isan experience in itself and is open tothe public without charge. The studyroom is the only part which is not openon Sunday and Monday. There are exhibitionswhich kids enjoy visiting andanyone who has ‘roots’ in Zeeland canuse the computer to search for familysecrets and get print-outs to take home, although this of course involves a fee. The road winds and twists through a landscapeof fields, trees and bushes and then, all at once, you see the town embedded ingreen, like love-in-a-mist. If you are looking for natural green spots in the town, youwill not be disappointed. Middelburg has plenty of greenness to offer, perhaps eventoo much for just one visit. Middelburg’s own citizens have known about it for years, but visitors continue to be amazed at how close they are to nature and blissful peace& quiet in relation to the heart of the town.Middelburg is an ancient town whichhas fortified walls. These are called theBolwerk, meaning ramparts, which ismost appropriate since they are rampantwith greenery. Furthermore, it is anational monument and a protectedtownscape. Whatever the name, youneed only about an hour to have a lovelywalk from the Veerse Bolwerk to theVlissingse Bolwerk, or the other wayround. And if the peace is too much foryou, the town centre is only threeminutes away.

A long path forwalkers and cyclists runs along the outsideedge of the park. In fact, it is themost pleasant route to take back intotown. It is almost as though the LangeJan tower is beckoning you back intothe centre and its entertainment, afteryour stroll in the park.Looking for fun with the family? What is more, you can reach the park by car, or bybike.Just outside Middelburg, and verynear each other, we have ToorenvliedtPark and the Ter Hooge rural estate.Toorenvliedt was designed, after WorldWar II, by the landscape architectBroersen. It is a wooded park, wherevisitors with an eye for botany will findinteresting plants, such as Allium andPrimula. The old military bunkers in thepark have been well hidden to everyone, except to the many bats who find theirhome there in the winter. There is a birdand hedgehog sanctuary onToorenvliedt’s grounds, and visitors arewelcome to look in there.Nature has been more left to itself onthe Ter Hooge estate, which is ownedby the ‘Zeeuws Landschap’ i.e.Zeeland’s Landcape. The vegetationthere is different from Toorenvliedt.40

It contains a large colony of herons, living peacefully beside kingfishers. And now back to the town centre. The Municipality’s Department of Parkshas published a booklet describing three‘tree routes’. Each route takes about twohours and can be walked during anyseason of the year.Anyone who takes the trouble inadvance to visit Middelburg on the Internetfinds it easily at www.bomenmb.dds.nlYou can send an e-mail, so as to contactJohan Antheunisse. He knows everythingabout green Middelburg and awhole lot more, too! Johan gives tours, during which not even the tiniest plant -on a quay wall or an ancient house -escapes his eagle eye and is pointed outto his followers. Make a mental note tolook out for the red valerian on theDokhaven wall.Bomenroutes/Tree routes(only obtainable in Dutch)The Middelburg Department of Parkshas compiled the trees booklet. Itdescribes three routes along trees in theinner town of Middelburg.Route/RoutesThe walks are calculated to last forabout two hours. By combining all threeroutes, you can extend your walk(s) towhatever length you choose, alternativelyyou can shorten the distance. Thewalks are not only described in texts, but also accompanied by clear maps, leading the walker past the trees in thecentre of Middelburg.A mine of informationThe booklet contains short accounts andsuccinct details about the beautiful treesyou meet as you stroll along. We learnthat superstition played an importantrole when planting trees in days gone by.Lime trees were planted for good luckand love, while oaks were planted as asymbol for old age. The booklet can beused all the year round. Not only does itgive information about trees in general, but also about leaves, buds, flowers andfruits. The booklet includes a list of all thetrees you see during a walk and givestheir Latin names as well.ObtainableThe booklet can be bought for € 2.50 -cash and exact money – at the AfdelingCommunicatie (Department ofCommunication), Stadhuisstraat 2. Sport and recreation Sport et loisirsSport and relaxationAnyone thinking about sport, recreation and Zeeland immediately thinks of the sea,the beaches and the cycle paths. Nevertheless, Middelburg has a rich choice offacilities for exertion and relaxation. The brand-new StadsgewestelijkZwembad/Swimming Pool was openedin 2003 and is located on the NieuweVlissingseweg between Middelburg andVlissingen. It’s a stunning complexwhich contains a recreational pool, ateaching pool, a championship pooland a health & fitness studio. You canget there by cycling, but also by busand it has an extensive parking area forcars. You can, of course, play boule orpetanque on the beach or in a park, but the members of the CJBMiddelburg Club have for the past 25years played in their own Boulodrome.Visitors, who are not members, are alsoallowed to play on Thursday eveningsand can take up the challenge of meetingZeeland ‘old hands’. The grounds onthe Koudekerkseweg 139 (next to theToorenvliedt Park) are open for enthusiastson Saturday and Sunday afternoonsfrom 14:00 – 17:00 hrs.Activités sportives et détenteEn matière de sport et de loisirs, l’on associeautomatiquement la Zélande à la mer, aux plages et auxpistes cyclables. A guidewill tell you about the rich history asyou glide past fascinating sights andbuildings, and the tour takes 40 minutes. The boats work 7 days a week inthe period May to September and youdon’t need to make any reservation. The water sightseeing company‘Rondvaart Middelburg’ can be foundnear the Konmar supermarket, on theroad which leads to Serooskerke. It’s quite a different matter to takeoff in a canoe to gain a view from waterlevel. The Kanohaven (/Canoe Harbour)de Piet lies on the VeerseMeer/Lake.They rent out one-personand two-person kayaks and Canadiancanoes. Wearing your lifejacket andarmed with short but thorough instruction, advice on a route and tips aboutthe nature you will encounter, a wholenew world opens up. Middelburg lieswithin paddling reach, while the VeerseLake and creeks are also very inviting.Kanohaven de Piet also rents outrowing boars, pedal boats and rafts.42

TIPSGame shooting and fishing can oftenlead to heated discussions. The only‘game’ visitors to Zeeland can shoot ismosquitoes, but the fishing in andaround Middelburg is excellent. Youdon’t need a licence if you cast out aline from the beach, but you will haveto get one if you fish in the inner waterways.Fishing tackle shops and themain post office in Middelburg all sellfishing licences, which you can buy tocover a week or a month. You might think that skeeling hadbeen specially invented for Zeeland. The long stretches of asphalted cyclepaths are irresistibly inviting andwhether you have a head wind or thewind behind you, it’s always fun.If you leave from Middelburg, you skeelbeside the dike along the towing-pathto Vlissingen, alternatively you canchoose the smooth concrete road toVeere, via Zanddijk. You can also skeelin the Vrouwenpolder, which you reachvia the creeks area.Squashcentrum SquashzzyGrenadierweg 1, 4338 PG Middelburg(0118) 64 01 38Stal (Stables) Groot ProoijenGeersesweg 10, 4332 RA Middelburg(0118) 62 46 68 (only for indoor ridinglessons, not for riding outdoors)Duno Manege / MinicampingDunoweg 5, 4356 EJ Oostkapelle(0118) 59 15 00 (riding outdoors andalong the beach in the tourist season)RingrijdenThere is ring-tilting (see page 27) nearlyevery day somewhere in Walcheren.Whether it is a tournament or just ademonstration, it is always spectacular.Flying single-line kites always allowed onall beachesSome beaches do not allow two-liners tobe flown between 10:00 and 18:00 hrs.The regulations are published on noticeboards. Miniature WalcherenWho remembers, when they were small, of dreaming about being as big as a giant?Of course, not for always, but just for an afternoon or so …Fulfil your dream and make a ‘gigantic’ visit to Miniature Walcheren, where the mottois:KLEIN ZEELAND GROOT SPEELLAND / TINY ZEELAND IMMENSE PLAYGROUNDand they really make it come true. Where else can you see the Lange Jan towertwice: just in front of you and then the real one behind the chestnut trees? If you’rein luck, the carillon of both towers will be chiming for you at the same moment.Miniature Walcheren started out as atribute to Walcheren from before WorldWar II, the island having been floodedby the Allies. Then there was a competition, when volunteers in every municipalityworked together to built a miniatureversion of their villages. An exhibitionof the results was opened in 1954by Queen Juliana. Koudekerke won thecompetition, but in fact the whole ofWalcheren ‘won’, because 50 yearslater all the buildings are still standing. Most of the original miniatures weremade of wood, but they have now beenreplaced by stronger replicas.Once every year, a crawling-on-allfourschampionship is held for youngand old. The record of 50 m., as notedin the Guiness Book of Records, tookplace in: Middelburg! The staff who run MiniatureWalcheren would like to see all visitorsgoing down on their knees to view thebuildings effectively. Kids do that automatically, because they want to have alook inside the houses, to pat a minicow or to give a little car a push.Needless to say, the patting and pushingis not allowed, so more things whichMiniature WalcherenQui n’a jamais rêvé d’être un géant?

Kids are in their elementhere and parents will be glad to hearthat safety plays a major role. Theindoor play castle is a climb, slide andhide-and-seek paradise. Sitting onscooters, they can pretend they are realracing drivers, whether or not mum ordad is sitting behind them. The miniaturetrain takes them for a free ride, always on time, but with the excitementof going through a tunnel. Mini-golf,swings, bouncy cushions: you name it,it’s there.King William Walcheren and hiscourt jester Wallie live in MiniatureWalcheren. Is there any child whowould not like to sleep as royally as theking? Just ask!2004 will be a jubilee year forMiniature Walcheren. An exhibition isplanned, looking back over the eventsof the past 50 years.46

The region La régionMiddelburg’s surroundingsMiddelburg has a number of small village ‘kernels’. They are located on the outeredge of the town, but even so they belong to it ……..Kleverskerke is tiny, just aProtestant Reformed church and a coupleof houses, situated by the VeerseMeer/Lake. Cycle paths crisscross thelandscape and lead Kleverskerke’s visitorsvia the lock (pedestrians and cyclistsonly) to Veere in a mere 15 minutes. The village has a mini-camping site. Its name is de Zonnekoningin (The SunQueen) and you can book in on theinternet. Your horse is as welcome asyou are here!Arnemuiden, known for its bells.Arnemuiden’s former town hall hasbeen turned into a fishery museum andthe interior of one of the village’s littlehouses is completely in 1900 style. Is that going back a bit too far for amodern tourist? Well, Zeeland Airportalso belongs to Arnemuiden, althoughit is a couple of kilometres from thevillage centre. It’s an operational airportand you can even take an aerialview of the landscape on one of thetourist flights. However, if you preferto keep your feet firmly on the ground, you can do so in the airport’srestaurant.Nieuw en St. Joosland are beggingto be visited. No problem, just take astroll across the dike by the windmill. It couldn’t be more typically Zeelandthan this. The mill, ‘BuitenVerwachting’ (1874) can be visited onSaturdays from 12:00 – 16:00 hrs, butyou must first make a phone call:(0113) 22 05 85. There is a tearoom,De Bokkenburg, in a farmhouse nearAutour de MiddelburgMiddelburg comprend plusieurs petits villages, situés àsa périphérie mais faisant incontestablement partie de laville…the village centre: we recommend thetypical Zeeland cinnamon buns!Brigdamme and Sint Laurens werefirst separate but were then linkedagain, because the church inBrigdamme burned to the ground.Nowadays they are again two separatevillage kernels and joined toMiddelburg. If you start in Klarenbeek, there is a narrow, overgrown pedestrianand cycle path which runs toBrigdamme; it used to be the oldchurch path leading to the churchwhich burned down. The path terminatesat the Noordweg, which is themain street through Brigdamme andSint Laurens. Don’t miss the shop ‘DeWijzer’ on the Noordweg, whereBrigdamme’s clockmaker has beautifulclocks in his window display.Sint Laurens still has its ownchurch, a simple one dating from1642. As from 2004, this church willbe the centre point in a park in theheart of the ‘village’. In front of thetown hall, unmistakably built in the1930s, lies a mysterious stone. It is amemorial stone, bearing the names ofmany people and one of them isNansen – yes, the very same Nansenwho made an expedition to the NorthPole.47
