Householdsanitation is almost absent in all the slums except in few. Community toilets are poorlymaintained and the residents tend to defecate in the open due to lack of sanitationfacilities and improper upkeep of public conveniences. The Karnataka Slum ClearanceBoard has constructed Community Latrines in all the slums but is unused due to nonavailability of water and due to its pay & use policy. Due to the poor maintenance ofthe toilets residents tend to defecate in the open, causing nuisance in the surroundingarea. The septic tanks are in pathetic condition and the effluent is left to open drains.Table 2.6.
