The Chinese government conceals the statistical and demographic data of the Tibet AutonomousRegion since it is a very sensitive issue for China. However, from the scarce publicly availabledata we can establish that population control measures have been in effect in Tibet since 1983,when the government began enforcing a policy that allows urban Tibetans to have no more thantwo children. We can also determine that a previous attempt at population control in 1970 wasaborted undoubtedly in order to avoid civil unrest.Since the annexation of Tibet by China in 1951, Tibetans have become a minority in their owncountry while Han Chinese have become the majority. The 2000 census reveals that of the 5.4million Tibetans in China 2.4 live in the Tibet Autonomous Region and they make up 45% of thepopulation.Beyond that not much can be ascertained about population control in Tibet, but considering thatChina intends its population to peak by 2030 and that Tibet is now part of China, we can safelyconclude that Tibet’s population will also be engineered to peak around the same time.836 | P a g e
