As the data shows, itsGDP per capita began rising in 1970, when Taiwan had nearly halved its fertility (from 7 to 4children per woman), and did not explode until 1984, when the country reached replacementlevel fertility. Because Taiwan began to sterilize its people sixteen years earlier than mainlandChina (1952 as opposed to 1968) and reached replacement level fertility eleven years earlier thanChina (in 1984 and 1995 respectively), Taiwan’s GDP began to rise at least ten years earlier thanthat of China (in 1970 as opposed to 1980).Taiwan is in stage four of the demographic transition.818 | P a g e
