All subsequent Serbia leaders have stayed the course: Milan Milutinović (1997-2002), NatašaMićić (2002-2004), Boris Tadić (2004-2012), and the incumbent Tomislav Nikolić (since May2012). They have kept Serbia’s total fertility rate at or below 1.5 children per woman, which iswhy Serbia’s population has been decreasing since 1992.Since Serbia’s contraceptive prevalence rate has never been higher than 58% and since it hasbeen below 45% (of which only 22% by modern methods) during the past decade when Serbiahas had the lowest total fertility rate in its history, it is as clear as daylight that contraceptiveshave absolutely nothing to do with the country’s low fertility. The historical record shows that abortion did play a role during the 1970s and 1980s when theabortion rate was at around 65%, but during the 1990s the rate fell to 40% and since the turn ofthe century to just 20%. As endocrine disruptors are now endemic Serbians are becoming sterileand conception happens increasingly rare.Serbia is in the fifth and last stage of the demographic transition.728 | P a g e
