Judging by the relatively modest drop in fertility, from 7.5 to children per woman prior to 1980to 5 today, we can surmise that Senegal’s leaders have pursued population control throughvoluntary and legal means, namely through family planning services and better provision ofcontraceptives. With a current contraceptive prevalence rate of just 13% the country has a long way to go toaccomplish its demographic objectives safely and fairly.Until such time as Senegal addresses the issue of fertility its people will remain poor. Its GDPper capita has been stuck at c. $800 for the past fifty years.722 | P a g e
