Forwhen Portugal reached replacement level fertility in 1979, the contraceptive prevalence rate wasstill below 60%.Today it is apparently at 87% (of which 83 by modern methods) and still cannot possibly accountfor Portugal’s extremely low fertility rate of 1.2 children per woman. Contraceptives, it will beremembered, even if used without fail, cannot suppress family size below the people’s preferredfamily size.The historical record shows that abortion is not a factor in Portugal’s low fertility. Until the turnof the 21 st century the abortion rate was far below 1%.
