While the British forced covert depopulation measures onto the Bahamian people, the firstpresident of independent Bahamas, Sir Lynden Pindling, the “Father of the Nation” and in officefrom 1973 to 1992, shut down the depopulation program twice during his presidency andprotected the people. The same cannot be said of his successors, Hubert Ingraham andincumbent Perry Christie, who have held the presidency in alternate administrations since 1992.The Bahamas have had replacement level fertility since 2002 but not due to contraceptives sincefewer than 45% of Bahamians use contraceptives. Nor do abortions have anything to do with thelow fertility since it is illegal and allowed only to save a woman’s life or health.The Bahamas is in stage four of the demographic transition.62 | P a g e
