It has since perpetuated the myth that contraceptiveuse, which even today is no higher than 74%, and during the 60s and 70s was never higher than30% and 40% respectively, is responsible for the country’s low fertility. Nor can surgicalsterilization be used to hide the use of covert methods of depopulation since surgical sterilizationwas not available until 1977, when the Contraception, Sterilization and Abortion Act was passed,but by which time the country had already reached replacement level fertility.Abortion has also never been a factor in New Zealand’s fertility decline. As the historical recordshows the abortion rate was below 1% during the 1960s and below 6% during the 1970s, bywhich time replacement level fertility was fully accomplished. Throughout the 1980s theabortion rate was around 12% and during the 1990s at 16% while fertility remained unchanged at2 children per woman. Since the turn of the century the abortion rate has been at around 22%and fertility has remained unchanged.Another myth perpetuated by the depopulation lobby is that affluence brought about fewerchildren, which is clearly not the case. By correlating fertility data from 1960 until today withNew Zealand’s GDP growth one can clearly see that during the sixteen years (from 1962 to1978) it took New Zealand to subvert fertility from 4.3 to 2.1 children per woman the country’sGDP was flat and that affluence came after the demographic transition was completed, aselsewhere in the world.586 | P a g e
