As High Commissioner of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1969 to 1976, EdwardE. Johnston began covertly undermining human fertility in Micronesia on behalf of PresidentNixon, America’s premier depopulationist. This was continued by all subsequent highcommissioners until 1987, by which time Micronesians took control over their own country:Peter Tali Coleman (1976-1977), Adrian P. Winkel (1977-1981), and Janet J. McCoy (1981-1987). As the total fertility graph above clearly shows, it is during this period of Americanadministration that the fertility declined the most and most rapidly, going from 7 to 5 childrenper woman.Since independence, Micronesia’s leaders have slowed down the pace of population control. Thetotal fertility rate has declined to 3.4 children per woman and the contraceptive prevalence ratehas climbed to 55%. This decline in fertility is aided by endocrine disruptors in the food chain.Micronesia is in stage three of the demographic transition.525 | P a g e
