The fact that Macedonia’s low fertility has absolutely nothing to do with the way Macedoniansuse contraceptives is amply demonstrated by the country’s contraceptive prevalence rate, whichhas never exceeded a measly 13%.The historical record also shows that abortion has been a secondary factor in suppressing fertilityduring the 1980s, when 43% of all pregnancies ended in abortion, and during the 1990s, when35% of all pregnancies ended in abortion. As soon as endocrine disruptors from the Westbecame endemic, however, abortions have dropped to 22% in the first decade of the 21 st centuryand to less than 20% in the past five years, which cannot possibly account for Macedonia’s subreplacementlevel fertility.Macedonia is in stage four of the demographic transition and is about to enter stage five withinthe next few years.475 | P a g e
