Kyrgyzstan’s abortion rate was around 35% in the 1980s, 25% in the 1990s, and 15% since thebeginning of the 21 st century. As such, it could not account for the low fertility on its own (evenin the 1980s when women aborted the most) or even in conjunction with contraceptives, whoseuse was highest in the late 1990s, at 60%, but has since sunk to 36% because people are beingsterilized with covert chemical means since the turn of the 21 st century and contraceptives are nolonger needed to prevent conception.Kyrgyzstan is in stage three of the demographic transition.430 | P a g e
