Kenya’s program of population control did not kick in until 1978 when Daniel arap Moi becamePresident of Kenya upon the death of Jomo Kenyatta, the founding father of the Kenyan nation,who protected his people from genocide.During Moi’s presidency from 1978 to 2002, the total fertility rate declined from nearly 8 to 5children per woman.From 2002 until 2007, thus throughout his first term in office, President Mwai Kibaki did notpursue a policy of fertility reduction, which is why the total fertility rate remained unchanged at5 children per woman. During the second term (2007-2013), however, President Kibaki gave into pressure from the international community and by 2010 he approved the use of covertmethods of depopulation.As of 2013, Kenya has a new president, Uhuru Kenyatta, the son of Kenya’s founding father,Jomo Kenyatta.
