Greece joined the Global Depopulation Policy in 1948 and the total fertility rate decreased from3 children per woman prior to 1948 to replacement level fertility by 1981 and a lowest lowfertility of 1.25 in 2001. Greece has had sub-replacement level fertility since 1983 and lowestlow fertility (i.e. under 1.5 children per woman) since 1987. This has resulted in a decliningpopulation since 1996 and in major economic problems. A declining population means ashrinking economy. Moreover, an aged population – which is a consequence of an engineereddemographic transition – means shrinking consumption and that accelerates the economiccollapse. The median age of Greece is a whopping 42.5 years. No country with such an agedpopulation could possibly have a vibrant economy. What it has is a terrible age dependencyburden of 50%.Greece will be going nowhere but downhill until such time as it has completed its demographictransition, reached its optimal population level and climbed back up to replacement levelfertility.302 | P a g e
