The Gambia is a late and reluctant participant in the Global Depopulation Policy.The man responsible for succumbing to pressure from the international community to finallybegin addressing his country’s population growth problems is the current President of theGambia, Yahya Jammeh, who assumed power through a military coup in 1994.That Gambia’s 30% reduction in its total fertility rate in a period of little more than ten years isnot the result of wide contraceptive use but of involuntary sterilizations by western NGOsoperating under the direction of the UN system and the guise of improving child and maternalhealth is amply demonstrated by the country’s very low contraceptive prevalence rate, which hasyet to reach 20%.282 | P a g e
