Estonia’s contraceptive prevalence rate has never been higher than 70%, of which only 56% bymodern contraceptives, and serves only to mask covert chemical methods. From 1960 to 1998, Estonia has also relied on abortions to wage war on population growth andthe abortion rate has been consistently at or around 60%. The historical record shows that assoon as Estonia adopted the West’s covert chemical methods of sterilization at the beginning ofthe 1990s, women stopped getting pregnant and the abortion rate has consequently slowed: froma peak of 62.8% in 1993, to 49.9% in 2003, to 29.9% in 2013. However, even at its peak of68.6% in 1966, abortion was only a secondary method of population control.Estonia is a dying country and it is questionable whether it will survive its current subreplacementlevel fertility and rapidly decreasing population, which mark it as a country in anadvanced fifth and last stage of the demographic transition.254 | P a g e
