The country’s history of contraceptive use shows that during the 1980s, when fertility began todecline steeply, the contraceptive prevalence rate was a measly 10% and reached a maximum of36% towards the end of the decade. Even at the time of highest use, namely 63% in 2000,contraceptives cannot account for replacement level fertility.Nor can Algeria’s GDP account for the decline in fertility since Algeria is a poor country with anominal GDP per capita of $5,800 in 2014 and with half that in the late 1970s when fertilitybegan declining due to covert sterilization methods.Algeria is in stage three of the demographic transition.23 | P a g e
