As President of the Czech Republic from 1993 to 2003, he could have changed the world, butchose instead to walk in line with all others and stay behind history.Like all countries bordering the now defunct Iron Curtain, which were the first in Europe to besubjected to covert depopulation measures, the Czech Republic is a dying nation where childrenare a rarity and the people a mere shadow of their former selves. From 1960 until the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc in 1991 abortions have ended 30% to 45% ofall pregnancies in the Czech Republic and have therefore played an important role in the nation’swar on population growth. Since 1991, the abortion rate has decreased (from 48% in 1991, to38% in 1994, to 28% in 2000, and to less than 18% since 2008) but fertility has not, whichmeans that the Western methods of covert chemical sterilization adopted in the early 1990s havegradually kicked in and displaced abortion and contraceptives as the primary reasons for subreplacementlevel fertility. The contraceptive prevalence rate, like the abortion rate, has been declining since its 78% peakin 1990. Fertility, however, instead of rising has sunk even lower, reaching a lowest low of 1.13children per woman in 1999 and staying below 1.5 to this day.The population has been decreasing since 1994 and the number of deaths surpasses the numberof births, which means that the Czech Republic is in the fifth and last stage of the demographictransition.210 | P a g e
