Full details about this fantastic event can be found
on pages 44 and 45. A few months ago we
featured an article about the proposed 12 Wind
Turbine Farm on Rooley Moor which will have an
effect on the wildlife as well as spoil the green areas
enjoyed by walkers, bikers and horse riders. Plans
have now been submitted to add another 16
turbines which once again threatens Green Belt
common land. You can read all about it on pages
48 and 49.
In last month’s issue we advertised the Maypole
Event which was organised by Friends of the Park
on 3rd May. The organisers of this should be
congratulated on a great event and there are some
photos and a short summary on page 47.
With our usual contributions from Andrew Nutter,
Heather Williams (with some delicious BBQ ideas),
Police Update and What’s On Guide, this month’s
issue is once packed full of useful and interesting
information – as well as of course a great selection
of local businesses advertising their services.
NEW MANAGER AND
NEW CHEF ON THE WAY!
MEET JOEY OUR NEW GENERAL MANAGER
"I'm really excited about joining the team at The Norden Arms and
can't wait to start making some positive plans and changes for the
future.
Having started my career as a chef back in Australia, I’ve had some
of the best opportunities to work around world; Mostly in Hong Kong
and Singapore and all through Europe. This is where I really
discovered my love and passion for great food and drink. I also went
on to study Hospitality in Sydney achieving a diploma and completed
a cookery course. From an early age I knew that hospitality was not
only a job for me, it was my life!
After moving to England a couple of years ago and working in the
city, I have just joined the team here and have been over whelmed
by the warm welcome from our customers, it's a real hub for the
local community and I am so pleased to be a part of growing the
business further over the coming months. There is some very
exciting things coming to the Norden Arms, one of the most
exciting being the arrival of our Brand new double rosette winning
Head Chef! Due to join us in the next few weeks he will be a huge part of Launching our new look
restaurant with its own name and A La Carte menu. We have already got our decking up and ready
for the summer which is already proving a hit!
I’m looking forward to meeting all our regular and new customers over the coming months and
providing you all with a warm welcome, and the best hospitality that I and my team can offer"
Youth Nuisance In
Norden Village
It is clear that in recent weeks there has been an upsurge in youth nuisance in our Village.
This has manifest itself in large groups of young people often as many as 60 or 70 gathering
at a number of points in the area. Associated with this , have been a number of instances in
which as small but significant number of members of these groups have become drunken
and unruly , causing annoyance and fear to local residents and intimidating local business
owners as well as causing damage to property .
For obvious reasons ,these instances have met with a robust response from Greater Manchester Police
and Rochdale Council`s Community Safety Team; as part of that strategy it was necessary to put in
place a Dispersal Order , contravention of which could lead to significant sanction on individuals in
breach, for short periods. People should be in no doubt that should these measures be required again
,they will be used without hesitation
It is a source of great disappointment that such measures are necessary to control a very small minority of young people
causing distress at the heart of our community - the vast majority of young people in our Village make a very welcome
positive contribution to all the best aspects of Village life and we should not allow their collective reputation to be
damaged by the actions of a few.
Determined law enforcement , will not provide anything other than a short-term solution to the problems outlined above
and it is clear that a longer term solution lies in improving the provision of activities for teenagers in Norden. Our Local
Councillors and members of the Rochdale Township Team are urgently looking at what resources might be available
within the Council to help in addressing the need for more activities for young people.
Clearly Rochdale Council has does not have endless finance and other inputs to help with this problem, and at least part
of the solution will need to come from within our Community. I would therefore like to use this column to ask local
people, business and interest groups whether they are willing to help with this issue. If you have expertise, money or
other resources ( or even just a useful idea) to help improve the provision for teenagers in our Village , please contact
Katie Moore at Rochdale Township Office on 924770.
Katie will be co-ordinating and assessing all the offers which we receive and a progress report will be available at the
June Meeting of Norden Area Forum.
NATIONAL CYCLING MEDAL
AMONG OLYMPIC COMPETITORS
Lewis Craven, owner and full-time
optometrist at Craven & Murray
amateur cyclist, has won a
prestigious cycling medal, beating
professional athletes to the
podium.
The National Cyclo-Cross Championships
took place in Abergavenny, Wales earlier
this year, where professional and amateur
cyclists line up together for the race made
up of laps around a cross-country course.
During the race, Lewis crept into the top
position for part of the event, ahead of
Olympic cyclists and previous national
champions.
Lewis, an amateur cyclist, squeezed his
finished in third place, beaten only by two
professional cyclists: Ian Field, the threetime
defending National Cyclo-Cross
champion and Liam Killeen who
represented Great Britain as the sole male
cross-country rider in the London 2012
Olympics.
Lewis Craven, owner of Craven & Murray
experience and to come in third place and
receive the bronze medal after two
professional cyclists is just incredible.
the country, so I went into this
competition expecting to come in a similar
position. I would have been absolutely
thrilled with sixth, so to come third overall
is a great achievement for me.
“I’ve been working hard to fit my training
in around running my own business where
I work full time, and spending time with my
family. It’s been a tough ride, but the
medal has made it so worth it. I’ll be back
in Craven & Murray Opticians tomorrow
morning though, the world doesn’t stop
because I’ve achieved one of my cycling
goals!”
eighteen year old woman, and befriended her. He supplied her with
alcohol and drugs before he was introduced to one of her friends, a
sixteen year old boy. On a number of occasions, Zaman picked them
up in his car and drove around Rochdale supplying them both with
alcohol and cigarettes. He often took them to his home at the time on
Clovehall Crescent and offered to pay them both for sex, which they
refused. During the summer of 2012, Zaman sexually assaulted the
Greater Manchester choirs in
harmony for new commission
Two well-established, but very different, choirs - Rochdale-based Cantare, for female voices,
and Greater Manchester Police Male Voice Choir (GMPMVC) who first sang together at
a sell-out concert at the Curtain Theatre, Rochdale, in December - are coming together
for an exciting musical project - their most ambitious to date.
Composer and University of Manchester alumnus Chris Roe
Last year the choirs, who share the same musical
director, Michael Betteridge, invited proposals for a
brand new choral piece that they will perform
alongside Fauré’s Requiem and Bob Chilcott's A
Little Jazz Mass, at the newly refurbished Royal
Northern College of Music Concert Hall in
July. The competition was open to composers under
30, with links to the North West.
Mr Betteridge said, "We received some exceptional
entries which made judging very difficult". Luckily, as
well as representatives from both choirs, they were
able to call on the expertise of conductor
Manvinder Rattan, who has appeared as a judge on Gareth Malone's shows, and
internationally acclaimed choral composer Gabriel Jackson, to assess the applications.
The commission was won by exceptional young composer and University of Manchester
alumnus, Chris Roe. Mr Betteridge continued, "Chris’s proposal, and the portfolio of works
he submitted, demonstrated an excellent understanding of choral writing, as well
as a really unique compositional voice. He met both choirs in order to get to know them
better before embarking on composing the new work, “Visions of Paradise”, which has just
been completed. Joint rehearsals will begin in March. It is a really exciting chapter in the
history of the choirs!"
Mr Roe commented "I am thrilled to be working with these choirs as they join forces. I
attended a couple of separate rehearsals in 2014, and the enthusiasm and energy that they
bring to their singing is more than a composer could ever ask for. I am looking forward
to hearing how they progress with "Visions of Paradise” which takes inspiration from the
“In Paradisum” movement of Faure's Requiem, and explores what paradise means to different
people. A series of short movements take us through a variety of potentially paradisiacal
moments, including a placid nocturnal scene, a raucous drinking song, and a frantic
account of a package island holiday towards the end. I can't wait to see how the choirs
bring out the different characters throughout the piece!”
44 To advertise call 07976 289967 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

A spokeswoman from Cantare said: "We already love to sing a wide repertoire but are really
looking forward to the challenge of singing a brand new piece, specially composed for us,
as well as the experience of being part of a large mixed voice choir for this very special event.
It will be hard work, but it will be worth it!"
A spokesman from GMPMVC said: “We have had works commissioned for us previously but
we are particularly excited about this one as it is the first time that we have jointly
commissioned a new work to be sung with a ladies choir. Joint rehearsals should be
interesting and fun!”
The concert will help to raise funds for Francis
House Children’s Hospice in Didsbury. Peter
Forster, fundraising manager at Francis House
Children’s Hospice, said: “We are delighted to
be associated with this event and to be the
beneficiary charity. We rely on voluntary
donations for nearly 90% of our annual
running costs and so the support of
GMPMVC and Cantare is hugely appreciated.
Francis House provides a home from home
environment for 300-plus children and
young adults, as well as their families. All
our services are provided free of charge and
our aim is to make difficult lives a little less difficult and provide a
light at the end of the tunnel where we can.”
The concert will be held on the evening of 18th
July 2015 and tickets are now available via
http://www.rncm.ac.uk/whats-on/events/
The choirs are seeking donations to help cover the
cost of this new musical venture. Anyone interested
The Friends of Jubilee Park Host
Another Successful Event
On Sunday 3rd May, Friends of Jubilee Park held their Maypole Event,
which was a huge success.
Even the rain held off and the sun made an appearance helping to ensure a good turnout for
the day. The Friends of the Park Group had put a lot of hard work into the event to ensure it
was fun for all the family. The park
was looking very smart as the group
had been working on it so it looked
it’s best on the day. All the children
loved the bouncy castle, tuck shop,
penalty shoot out and face painting.
There was also a sports day event
lined up with an egg and spoon
race, sack race and three legged
race. There was entertainment for
all the family, with a tug of war for
the adults and both adults and
children embraced the community
spirit and learnt how to maypole
dance.
There were also special guest appearances
from Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse
and Buzz Lightyear,
which was a
big hit with the
children.
Coming soon? –
a wind farm near you.
Plans have now been submitted to Rossendale Council by Scout Moor Expansion Ltd (a joint venture by Peel and United
Utilities) to add another 16x115 metre turbines to their 26x100 metre turbine Wind Farm on Scout Moor.
Coronation Power, the London based company responsible for the destruction of Crook Hill are awaiting a decision from
Rochdale Council to their application to add another 12x125 metre turbines straddling Rooley Moor Road, The Pennine
Bridleway and The Mary Towneley Loop. If the Rossendale and Rochdale Councillors consent the applications, we will have a
54 turbine wind farm on our diminishing Green Belt Common Land. This will be the biggest onshore wind farm in England.
The question we must ask the Planning Authorities and the elected Councillors who will vote on these applications is this:-
“Will there be a net benefit to our
townships if we allow these developments
to go ahead?”
Here are twelve reasons why the answer
must be a resounding “NO”.
The enormous subsidies are paid for by
YOU, the consumer. The turbines are
German, the Lord of the Manor resides
in Salisbury, the controlling
shareholder of Peel resides in the Isle
of Man, xxxx incorporated by
Coronation Power, is registered in the
British Virgin Islands tax haven. In
short, this area is seen as an easy target
by aggressive developers and we are being seriously exploited for the promise of a financial return on business
rates and the creation of the illusionary “Community Benefit Fund”.
Your property value will diminish. Some properties will be unsaleable. The London School of Economics’ detailed report,
released in 2014, concludes that property values will fall by up to 11%. If these developments are consented, the cost to
local communities will be £70M for every 1% fall. Against this, any financial benefit from Business Rates is meaningless.
Scout Moor and Rooley Moor is the wrong place for a development of this magnitude. It is far too close to properties. The
impact for equestrians, walkers, cyclists and those who value the diminishing open spaces will be devastating.
48 To advertise call 07976 289967 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

Rural equestrian and bed and breakfast businesses will be hit hard by loss of income as visitors to the area diminish. The
turbines along the Pennine Bridleway National Trail will impact greatly on equestrians with the nearest turbine only 174
metres away from their bridleway and standing at a height of 125 metres.
We have endured the unsightly 26 turbine wind farm since 2008. Any new development will be there until at least 2042. The
concrete bases, arterial roads and much of the infrastructure embedded in our moorland will be there forever.
The whole of Rooley Moor and much of Scout Moor is Green Belt Land and as such is protected by specific legislation. The
openness and accessibility of this area is essential to the wellbeing of our townships.
The whole of Rooley Moor and much of Scout Moor is Common Land and this again is protected by law. It is illegal to build
on Common Land yet this will not dissuade the developers who will apply to permanently deregister the Common. Traditional
hill farming that has been carried on for centuries will end.
The existing Scout Moor Wind Farm site is a ‘dead zone’ virtually devoid of wildlife and the site still has not been adequately
tidied. Not one penny of the so called Habitat Enhancement Plan Fund of £500,000.00 has been spent on the restoration
and repair of Scout Moor. Most of it has been paid to United Utilities, the joint owner of the site.
Access to the Rooley Moor site is up Rooley Moor Road, through Lane Head Village and on up The Cotton Famine Road.
Mitigation proposals by Coronation are ineffective as is the response from Rochdale’s Highways and Engineering Department.
The historic ancient Highway will be totally destroyed. The Gold Standard National Trail will be compromised and The Mary
Towneley Equestrian Loop will be severed. The Health and Safety threats posed by up to 340 HGV traffic movements every
day are unimaginable
Developer and Landowner greed comes first. Peel will not allow Coronation access to their proposed site via the pre-existing
access to the adjacent Scout Moor site. The Lord of the Manor has signed an exclusive development agreement with Coronation.
Both developers seek only to maximise their own profits at the expense of the local people. Why will they not put the interests
of local people ahead of their own greed?
The visual impact on heritage assets such as Prickshaw and Broadley Fold will be unacceptable. Conservation Area and
Listed Buildings are protected by specific legislation but that does not worry the developers at all.
Look around you. Where once there was Green Belt open land, there is now a sea of turbines in all directions. The proposed
new turbines are even bigger, even closer than those already there. Enough is enough. Let the developers go where there is
more room and less people.
Your elected Councillors and Members of Parliament are there to support you. That is why you voted for them. Please do tell
them about your concerns. Please do not allow these developments to be the final nail in Rochdale’s coffin. We are already
perceived to be a poor area famous in the media for everything that is socially bad in life. Do not add to that depressing list
“Home of the Biggest Onshore Wind Farm in England” Please act now!
Norden
Carnival
June is finally here and I know you’ll all be dusting off the fancy dress box and looking forward to
that ‘Stars in your Eyes’ moment when you and your family and friends are transformed into film
stars for the theme of this year’s Carinal, ‘My Favourite Movie’.
Once again, the support for the
event has been better than ever so
we’re expecting a great turn out for
the parade through the village. It
leaves Caldershaw School at 1pm
before going through the village to
the Norden Bus Terminus and
Jubilee Park. It then returns
through the village and turns
down Shawfield Lane to Norden
Community School. We’d like to
apologise to anyone in advance
who is delayed as a result of the
parade. If you need to travel by
car, we’d recommend avoiding
the village between 1pm-2pm.
The fun carries on at the school
until 4.30. Again, there’s be
fun fair rides, craft stalls, food,
drink and live music. We look
forward to seeing you all on
the day!
Birtle Trust
Saturday 6th June 2015 is a date to put in your diary as it is the date of Birtle's first ever village fete. The PackHorse Inn
has held a pet show for the last three years and there has been a scarecrow competition in the village for the last four
years but this year it has been decided to combine the two events with a village fete with all the proceeds going to the
charity, Birtle and Rochdale Riding for Special Needs. The fete gets off to a flying start at 10am with a 3k, 5k and 10k Fun Run
from the Church Inn on Castle Hill Road. You do need to enter in advance and there are prizes kindly donated by Foot Asylum. Then at
11am the fete starts on Elbut Lane with all the usual attractions plus lots more - a Tug of War, Duck Race, Falconry Show, Craft stalls,
Hog Roast, Homemade Cake tent, Scarecrow Competition and Dog Agility to name just a few. Everyone is welcome to have a go at
making a scarecrow - just bring it along on the day. Don't forget, there's a first prize of Newbank Garden Centre vouchers to be won!
And bring your dog too and have a go on the Dog Agility course - over the jumps, through the tunnels, up the ramps, on the seesaw and
weaving in and out the poles! Also there Is Birtle's very own Bake Off at the PackHorse. Bring your entry along on the day and let's see
who's the best baker in the area especially as Slatterys are providing first prize. Don't forget the photography competition too and of
course a Treasure Hunt for all the family to take part in with clues scattered round the lovely countryside of Birtle. There'll be plenty to
do all day and most importantly, absolutely all the proceeds are going to Birtle and Rochdale Riding for Special Needs, a charity based
at Birtle Riding Centre on Elbut Lane which provides disabled children and adults with the opportunity to ride.
Entry and car parking is free. More details and details of how to enter the competitions are on our website www.birtle.co.uk
ANOTHER EXCITING NEW SERVICE FROM YOUR LOCAL HOSPICE
Nearly 12 month’s ago, Springhill Hospice extended its work into the local community giving the people of the Borough access to
services such as specialist nursing, Hospice at Home and Night Sitting, to name just a few. The last piece of the jigsaw has now
been slotted into place with the introduction of a Community Volunteer service, whose aim is to complement the work of the clinical
Community Teams by providing support to patients and families in their own homes.
The type of duties the Community Volunteers will carry out include having a chat and a drink with a patient, light house duties, dog
walking and light gardening. Our Community Volunteer Coordinator, Sharon Hancock, has been busy signing up volunteers for this
new and exciting service and one of our new recruits, Glen Byrne, explained why he was keen to get involved:
'At the time of losing my father five years ago, I realised how important
it was for my father, myself and family to be surrounded by caring,
compassionate people. After experiencing this, I felt in some small way
I could offer the same back to others.'
Interested in joining our Community Volunteer Team and
making a real difference? If so, we’d love to hear from you.
Please contact Sharon Hancock, Community Volunteer
Coordinator, on 01706 752360 or email her at
sharon.hancock3@nhs.net.
Host Families for Dogs Wanted
Enjoy the love, companionship and exercise without the
fulltime responsibility of owning a dog
Some people say the best thing about being a grandparent is handing
the children back at the end of the day. The canine equivalent for dogs
is a company called Digs for Dogs.
So successful has the company been since its launch in Bury in 2012,
that Digs for Dogs has recently expanded its pet services business into
Rochdale and Oldham. Franchise owner Emma is keen to recruit
additional home boarding families in order to keep up with the
continued demand for the service, particularly throughout the summer
months.
Digs for Dogs Home Boarding Families are very special people. They
have all met the strict criteria and are dedicated pet lovers. Many home
boarders are retired people who miss the routine and exercise when they
suddenly find themselves without a pet.
Alternatively they may be at home during the day without children or
pets of their own, and a visiting dog compliments their existing
situation perfectly.
GREENSLEEVES LAWN CARE OLDHAM BECOMES A
WHICH? TRUSTED TRADER
Greensleeves Lawn Care Oldham can proudly call themselves a Which? Trusted trader, having
recently passed a rigorous assessment that recognises reputable and trustworthy traders.
Consumers in the Oldham area can have further confidence when using Greensleeves Lawn Care due to their Which?
Trusted Traders endorsement. In order to become a Which? Trusted Trader, Greensleeves Lawn Care successfully passed
the endorsement process, including a visit by a professional Which? Trusted Traders assessor with extensive trading
standards experience, as well as completing a company credit check and a random selection of customer references.
Stephen McCluskey, Managing Director of Which? Trusted Traders, said: “We are delighted
to announce Greensleeves Lawn Care Oldham as a Which? Trusted Trader. Our Which? Trusted Traders
service gives consumers the confidence to make the right choices when it comes to finding skilled
professionals and we’re pleased to be able to give traders the chance to distinguish themselves from their
peers. This scheme is a valuable, free resource for consumers and will help banish the risk of bodge jobs.”
Which? Trusted Traders offers additional peace of mind for consumers as they can also benefit from free dispute resolution
from the independent provider Ombudsman Services Ltd, should any issues arise between a trader and customer.
David Truby, Managing Director of Greensleeves Lawn Care said: “All Greensleeves Lawn Care experts are passionate
about lawn care and take pride in delivering a high level of customer service. Being endorsed by an organisation as
well respected as Which? gives our customers and potential customers the peace of mind that they are having their lawn
treated by someone who is highly skilled and will care for their lawn using the correct methods and techniques.”
If you think your lawn is in need of some expert help simply call Greensleeves Lawn Care Oldham on
