IntroductionHaving a diagnosis of cancer can be a devastating experience atany age, but in your teenage <strong>and</strong> younger adult years it can seemespecially frightening <strong>and</strong> make you feel quite vulnerable.The <strong>Teenage</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Young</strong> <strong>Adult</strong> <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Service</strong> provides specialistcare <strong>and</strong> emotional support to teenagers <strong>and</strong> young adults (14-24years) who have been diagnosed with cancer. We also providesupport for the families of young people referred to the service.Aims of the <strong>Teenage</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Young</strong> <strong>Adult</strong> (TYA) serviceOur aim is to provide services for teenagers <strong>and</strong> young adults(TYAs) with cancer <strong>and</strong> to ensure that we achieve the best possibleoutcomes for you.Our team consists of a Macmillan TYA Clinical Nurse Specialist; CLICSargent <strong>Young</strong> Persons’ Social Worker <strong>and</strong> a <strong>Teenage</strong> <strong>Cancer</strong> TrustYouth Support Coordinator.<strong>Service</strong>s outside Leicester <strong>and</strong> NottinghamAll patients under the age of 19 years diagnosed with cancer will betreated at the principal treatment centres (Leicester <strong>and</strong> Nottingham).Patients over the age of 19 years <strong>and</strong> under 25 years of age canchoose to be treated at either the Principal Treatment Centre or attheir local hospital if it has the facilities for their cancer treatments.Please talk with your consultant or clinical nurse specialist about youroptions.Multidisciplinary TeamAt diagnosis your treatment plan will be discussed at a TYAMultidisciplinary Team (MDT) meeting, held every Friday, where yourtreatment <strong>and</strong> your needs will be discussed. You will also be allocateda Key Worker, usually a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) who will be apoint of contact <strong>and</strong> responsible for coordinating your care.2


Other supportThe team also runs a monthly support group <strong>and</strong> organised eventsThere is an established youth group for ages 14-24 that meets atCoping with <strong>Cancer</strong> (a local charity).
