FROM THE CEO 

One of the best things about my job is 

hearing from patients who were so impressed 

by the care they received at Swedish that they 

took the time to call or write me, as the CEO, 

to say thank you. Often these letters and calls – 

and I get a lot of them – mention a 

physician, a nurse, or the members 

of a medical team by name. Sometimes 

they describe acts of clinical 

competence that made a dramatic 

difference in a patient’s life, a diagnosis 

that cleared up months of uncertainty, 

or a potentially painful procedure 

done so skillfully that the patient 

was able to move past discomfort and anxiety 

and begin to focus on healing. 

Just as often, however, these personal 

stories simply describe how Swedish caregivers 

went out of their way to help patients, to 

smooth over a difficulty, to provide a human 

touch, or to offer words of encouragement 

when they were needed. Both of these types 

of “grateful patient” stories make me proud to 

work at Swedish. 

Delivering health care of the highest 

quality certainly means bringing together in one 

place all of the skilled caregivers and technology 

needed to assess and treat every kind of illness 

and injury. At Swedish, however, we also know 

that quality care means staying focused on 

comforting, reassuring, and meeting the emotional 

needs of our patients. As Swedish evolves 

and grows as a regional medical center, it is central 

to our mission that we continue this tradition of 

delivering exceptional, patient-centered care. 

I am confident that we will. Swedish’s 

extraordinary success at keeping this core value 

alive in our hospitals and clinics for a hundred 

years is due largely to the fact that, from the 

beginning, the many talented 

people who have worked here have 

been influenced and inspired by 

philanthropy and community

And so, I want to pass on

but some of the gratitude that I receive regularly

Right now, our country is facing some 

very difficult economic times, and Swedish is 

not immune to these difficulties. In the year 

ahead, Swedish and the people it serves are

care. It’s a commitment that encompasses 

programs and services, facilities and medical 

expertise, and has drawn praise from thousands 

of patients and family members for the positive 

impact their Swedish experience has made to 

their health – and their lives. 

QualiTy CarE 

Has NEvEr bEEN ClOsEr 

“Close to home” is a meaningful phrase 

to a majority of people who receive their care 

at Swedish, whether they are inpatients or outpatients, 

visit a physician clinic or take advantage 

of an outreach program. “Close to home” 

is what we do: 

issaQuaH HOsPiTal: Swedish purchased 

nearly 18 acres of land in 2008 to offer a full-service 

community hospital in Issaquah. Scheduled to 

open in 2012 as Swedish’s fourth Seattle-area 

campus, the 175-bed hospital will provide residents 

of Issaquah and surrounding communities 

convenient and speedy access to life-saving care. 

OrTHOPEDiC iNsTiTuTE: Thousands of 

people turned out last summer to tour the new 

Swedish Orthopedic Institute on the First Hill 

campus. One of the largest facilities of its kind 

in the nation, it was designed with patients in 

mind: all of Swedish’s orthopedic services are 

now offered in a single location, offering both 

convenience and better outcomes. 

braiN TuMOr TrEaTMENT: In the fall 

of 2008, the Swedish Neuroscience Institute 

opened the Center for Advanced Brain Tumor 

Treatment, a multidisciplinary facility that 

is dedicated solely to the treatment of brain 

cancer. Innovative research and novel clinical 

trials will improve patient outcomes. 

sTrOKE CarE: Swedish expanded its 

successful stroke telemedicine program in 

2008 to ensure that patients in the Ballard 

and Issaquah emergency rooms, as well as 

patients in outlying hospitals, are evaluated 

quickly and accurately by Swedish’s stroke experts 

at the Cherry Hill and First Hill campuses. 

brEasT CarE: Also in 2008, Swedish 

rolled out its second mobile mammography 

coach, which will annually provide thousands 

of women throughout western Washington 

with unprecedented access to quality breasthealth 

services. 

PEDiaTriC CarE: In December, Swedish 

opened the Gossman Center for Advanced 

Pediatric and Perinatal Simulation – a first for 

the region – where health care teams can take 

part in training scenarios to sharpen skills and 

learn how to better care for our youngest patients. 

QualiTy CarE, aCCEssiblE TO all 

In line with our nonprofit mission, 

Swedish actively pursues opportunities to be a 

good community partner and provide comprehensive, 

high quality care to everyone who 

needs our services – regardless of their ability 

to pay. 

CHariTy CarE: Swedish devoted more 

than $70 million to charity and uncompensated 

care, health research and health education 

in 2008, with nearly $21 million of that 

total going to direct charity care. 

sPECialTy CliNiCs: Swedish operates 

several clinics that provide follow-up specialty 

care to the homeless, uninsured and underinsured, 

with physicians volunteering both their 

talent and time. The Mother Joseph clinic offers 

orthopedic, cardiology and neurology services; 

the Glaser Clinic provides surgical care; and the 

GYN Clinic gives women hope for better health. 

COMMuNiTy CarE: Swedish Family 

Medicine Residency clinics provide a wide range 

of compassionate care to people of all ethnic 

backgrounds and financial situations, with 

no regard to their ability to pay. The Swedish 

Ballard Community Nursing Clinic offers 

blood pressure checks, foot care, nutrition classes 

and other basic services to low-income seniors. 

Swedish is committed to continuing its 

tradition of providing care to everyone who 

needs it. 

GENErOsiTy Has NEvEr bEEN GrEaTEr 

One constant at Swedish is the steady 

growth of our programs and facilities, as we 

strive to expand into the communities and 

populations that, for whatever reason, have 

traditionally been underserved. 

In 2008, Swedish Medical Center 

Foundation had a record-breaking year, raising 

nearly $14.7 million in support of hospital 

programs and services. 

In May, Celebrate Swedish 2008 raised 

$4.3 million for charity care and brain cancer 

research, a significant increase over the previous 

year. 

Last year’s Swedish Fund Drive also was 

a resounding success, as were a number of other 

2008 fundraising efforts, many of which you 

will read about in this report. Overall, the 

purpose of our fundraising is straightforward: 

to provide the best care possible to the people 

and the communities we serve. 

At Swedish, our commitment – our responsibility 

– is to help you improve your health. 

We were able to do this in more ways than ever 

in 2008. By working together, we will see this 

growth continue throughout 2009 and beyond.

CaNCEr iNsTiTuTE 

The Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI) 

entered 2008 fresh from celebrating its historic 

75th anniversary and just as committed as ever 

to pursuing the new, leading-edge services and 

technologies that have made us the regional 

leader in cancer care – and a true source of hope 

for thousands of patients. Philanthropic support 

plays a major role in this ongoing success. 

In October, Swedish received a $1 

million grant from The 

Norcliffe Foundation 

in support of a new 

Women’s Cancer 

Center, which will be 

located at Swedish’s 

First Hill campus. 

When completed, it 

will be the largest, 

most comprehensive 

cancer center for 

women in the Pacific 

Northwest and a 

new national model 

for providing highly 

coordinated, multidisciplinary 

care. 

With the 

continued support of 

the community, Swedish is planning to open 

the Women’s Cancer Center in late 2010.

THE GrEaTEsT aND THE laTEsT 

Swedish’s reputation as being an early 

adopter of the most advanced treatments and 

technologies is a primary reason that nearly

saved her life. “I now have an awareness,” says 

Dixie, “that I am truly blessed.” 

always ON THE lEaDiNG EDGE 

Swedish’s well-respected position at the 

forefront of cancer treatment was again reinforced 

last year, when the SCI became the first 

cancer center in the United States to introduce 

VMAT (volume modulated arc therapy). 

VMAT, which significantly reduces radiation 

to normal tissue while increasing dosage to 

the cancerous area, is now the most efficient 

and most precise system ever developed for 

radiation treatments. 

It is this uncompromising dedication 

to patient health that led to the Swedish Cancer 

Institute being recognized, in late 2008, with 

the Outstanding Achievement Award with 

commendation by the American College of 

Surgeons, Commission on Cancer. This is the 

highest level of achievement possible for a 

hospital cancer program. Without the passion 

and commitment of the philanthropic community, 

milestones like these and many others 

would not be possible.

HEarT & vasCular iNsTiTuTE 

The Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute 

(SHVI) continues to explore the frontiers of 

leading-edge care which allows our caregivers 

to provide new and exciting solutions to oftencomplex 

heart and vascular problems that have 

earned us the trust of thousands of patients. In 

2008, nearly 14,000 people sought treatment 

from SHVI specialists – with good reason. 

“I’ll be forever grateful for the professional 

care and personal attention I received at Swedish

when I had a heart attack,” said one grateful 

patient and donor, Marilyn Prince. “I credit the 

expert staff for saving me and giving me an 

opportunity to continue on with my life. I give 

praise to every facet of my care.” 

The clinical quality so critical to positive 

patient outcomes is reflected in the time it takes 

from the moment an acute heart attack victim 

arrives at Swedish to the time the problem 

artery is repaired. The national goal is 90 minutes.

We provide the treatment in as few as 48 minutes, 

and we are sharing our expertise with other 

hospitals. The result: more lives are being saved. 

In 2008, the SHVI hosted the inaugural 

Transcatheter Valve Therapeutics (TVT) 

conference, just one example of Swedish’s 

commitment to education. This international 

forum – the first of its kind – brought together 

more than 350 cardiologists and surgeons to 

promote a multidisciplinary approach to repairing 

complex structural and valvular heart 

problems. The Seattle Science Foundation 

co-hosted the conference.

a position of prominence 

in 2008. Dr. 

Barnhart is a national leader in using small 

incisions and advanced technology to repair 

heart valves, and he and his colleagues offer 

Swedish patients some of the most sophisticated 

surgical options available anywhere. 

DONOr suPPOrT is iNvaluablE 

Critical to all of the SHVI’s ongoing 

advances – in areas ranging from prevention 

and diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation – 

is philanthropic support. The community’s 

support helps the SHVI set new standards in 

patient care, by developing and acquiring the 

newest technologies, advancing cardiovascular 

research, and expanding its leadership role in 

cardiovascular wellness. 

Multi-specialty collaboration between a Vascular Surgeon, 

Interventional Cardiologist and Interventional Radiologist help determine 

the best treatment options for patients. 

a HEarT-HEalTHy fuTurE 

At present, an estimated 1.5 million 

Washington state residents have some form of 

heart disease that requires medical care and 

that number is climbing. With the help of its 

donors, Swedish is attempting to reduce the 

risk and impact of cardiovascular disease. 

COMMuNiTy sErviCE: The SHVI’s Center 

for CardioVascular Wellness has long embraced 

heart health as a 

community-wide 

goal, and is now 

combining its care 

of cardiac and lungdisease 

patients with 

a strengthened commitment 

to preventing 

these disorders from 

ever occurring. Partnerships 

with other 

organizations and their 

employees are a key component of this focus. 

HybriD OPEraTiNG rOOM: A 2009 

priority is the SHVI’s Center for Advanced 

Cardiovascular Integrated Treatment, a hybrid 

operating suite that will feature multiple technologies 

in one room, making procedures more 

efficient and eliminating the need to transfer 

patients to other locations for specialized services. 

The Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute, 

which is affiliated with more than 60 cardiac 

and vascular specialists, is committed to staying 

at the forefront of cardiovascular medicine. 

By working together, we strengthened that 

commitment in 2008.

Patients with malignant brain tumors 

have traditionally lacked hope for a healthy 

future, as these tumors, especially rare types, 

are usually considered untreatable. Change 

is on the way, however – accompanied by 

renewed hope and a realistic opportunity for 

better patient outcomes. 

With strong, committed donor support, 

the Swedish Neuroscience Institute (SNI) 

opened the Center for Advanced Brain Tumor 

Treatment in 

2008 lead by 

Greg Foltz, M.D. 

The Center is 

a multidisciplinary 

clinic 

that gives 

patients immediate 

access to 

neurosurgeons, 

oncologists and 

radiologists, as 

well as leading-edge clinical trials and a comprehensive 

research laboratory. 

Launched with a cornerstone gift of 

$2 million from David and Sandra Sabey and 

Family, the Center is one of several visionary 

projects funded by the more than $4 million 

in philanthropic support the Neuroscience 

Institute received in 2008. Donations also 

supported our multiple sclerosis (MS) and 

epilepsy programs, patient education, and the 

expansion of our regional stroke program. 

sTrOKE TElEMEDiCiNE 

A year after establishing the region’s 

first stroke telemedicine program, which was 

funded entirely by philanthropy, the SNI 

again relied on donor support to expand the 

TeleStroke program to ensure that patients 

in rural communities benefit from our stroke 

expertise.

campuses, so

stroke-like 

symptoms could 

be diagnosed

In 2008, philanthropy allowed us to 

extend TeleStroke links to Jefferson Hospital 

and Skagit Valley Hospital – and provide the 

gift of health to an ever-widening number of 

stroke patients. We anticipate several more 

community hospitals joining the Swedish 

Stroke Telemedicine program in 2009. 

The Swedish Neuroscience Institute offers patients access to the latest technology 

and treatment options for the full spectrum of neurological conditions. 

a PErsONal aCCOuNT 

The value of a first-rate neuroscience 

institute is especially evident in the story of 

Dr. Bill Likosky and his skilled team of caregivers have helped make Swedish’s stroke program one of the mot successful in the country. 

John Top. John, who had never been ill in his 

life, was torn from his sleep one winter night 

in the throes of a seizure. The culprit: a malignant 

tumor in his brain. 

The general medical consensus – 

before John and his wife, Lori, found hope 

at Swedish – was that he should simply enjoy 

what little life he had left. At the Swedish 

Neuroscience Institute, the couple was offered 

a plan for surgery and follow-up treatment 

that would extend John’s life by at least 

several years. 

“I don’t sit around now,” says John. 

“If Lori and Isabelle, our daughter, want to 

go for a walk, we go for a walk. We appreciate 

the time we have together.” 

lOOKiNG aHEaD 

Continued community support of the 

Swedish Neuroscience Institute will allow for 

more life-saving stories like John’s. There is a 

definite need for a larger, state-of-the-art neuroscience 

intensive care unit, and we also will 

be working in 2009 to create the west coast’s 

most comprehensive MS center. Your partnership 

in these and other SNI projects continues 

to ensure that our patients have access to the 

most advanced neurological treatments.

OrTHOPEDiC iNsTiTuTE 

On June 23, 2008, after five years of 

planning and construction, the state-of-theart 

Swedish Orthopedic Institute officially 

opened and began welcoming patients to its 

new 372,000-square-foot facility on the First 

Hill campus. Ten technologically advanced 

operating rooms and a specially trained staff 

allow Swedish to perform more orthopedic 

procedures than any facility in the Northwest,

offering an improved lifestyle to patients from 

within the region and beyond. 

Consider Alex Polson and his wife, 

Dinny, who are both committed to active 

lifestyles. He walks and bikes, she is an avid 

golfer – but, in their early 80s and early 70s 

respectively, they also have experienced the 

agony of aging joints. Relief was as close as 

Swedish. 

Swedish currently handles more joint replacement procedures than any other medical organization in Washington state.

they chose Swedish?

joint replacements. And, unlike a traditional 

hospital, the Orthopedic Institute’s unique, 

patient-centered environment was designed to 

reduce stress, improve recovery time and lead 

to the smoothest possible transition from 

hospital to home. 

DONOr suPPOrT is CruCial 

Generous donor support will be a key 

component of future growth. Philanthropic 

gifts have already funded a number of surgical 

technology advances, while a Philanthropy at 

Work grant (awarded from unrestricted gifts 

made to Swedish) funds the Swedish Joint 

Journey program, which provides important 

information to patients scheduled to have a 

joint replacement procedure.

the new facility was named in honor of Wilma 

Nelson, as a way to recognize her past generosity 

for making a $2.4 

million bequest to

Continuing education 

is an important 

aspect of any orthopedic 

program, and,

the Institute’s nurses 

hosted their sixth 

annual education 

conference. 

THE fuTurE is briGHT 

The Institute’s opening is the latest 

chapter in Swedish’s long history of offering 

specialized care to orthopedic patients – but it 

is by no means the final chapter. 

With the help of the philanthropic 

community, Swedish is always looking for new, 

leading-edge orthopedic technologies that will 

allow us to provide an even higher level of care. 

We are establishing an endowed fellowship 

program, so that bright young surgeons can come 

to Swedish and work with our experienced 

surgeons, and we have a never-ending interest in 

delivering the best possible value for the dollars 

spent. At the Swedish Orthopedic Institute, 

philanthropic support helps ensure a brighter 

future with a constant focus on the best possible 

patient outcomes.

Swedish’s NICU, which cared for more 

than 800 babies in 2008, is already one of the 

region’s most advanced facilities – and donor 

generosity is making it better. By the end of 2009, 

our new $3 million NICU will be accepting 

new patients ensuring that mothers and their 

children receive the highest level of medical,

surgical and nursing care – all under one roof. 

With our Perinatal Medicine program 

for complicated pregnancies, and our NICU 

for sick and premature babies, Swedish is home 

to the most active high-risk OB program in 

Washington state. Thousands of families benefit. 

In addition, our Pediatric Specialty 

Care program averages approximately 20,000 

visits a year, offering children of all ages the 

expertise of leading pediatric specialists. A 

pediatric gastroenterologist, pediatric pulmonologist 

and pediatric sports medicine physician 

were added to the program last year. 

Much remains to be done, however. 

A new Women and Children’s Pavilion and a 

new Birth and Family Education Center are 

planned that will ensure that our most vulnerable 

patients continue to have access to the 

best available care. Your gifts, big and small, 

will help make this possible.

provides nearly $71 million in charity care and other community benefits. Any excess revenue over expenses is reinvested into the medical center, allowing

I am very pleased to report that 2008 

was a great year for Swedish Medical Center 

Foundation. This Annual Report describes many 

of the successes that we – and by “we” I mean the 

many donors, sponsors, volunteers and staff 

members who work so hard on behalf 

of Swedish Medical Center – accomplished 

last year. 

In 2008, we raised close to 

$14.7 million for Swedish programs 

and activities, the most in our history. 

Perhaps the best thing about last year 

was the breadth of the support we 

received, with more new donors and 

a larger number of individual gifts made than 

ever before. A series of very successful fundraising 

activities and events contributed to this total, as 

Celebrate Swedish 2008, the Women’s Wellness 

Luncheon, and Swedish SummerRun all set new 

records for attendance, for money raised, or for 

both. In June, we inaugurated another annual 

event, the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk. Participants 

in the Walk raised more than $120,000 for brain 

cancer research at the new Center for Advanced 

Brain Tumor Treatment at the Swedish Neuroscience 

Institute. 

Under the leadership of Dr. Hochman, 

we celebrated openings of the Center for 

Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment and the 

Gossman Center for Advanced Pediatric and 

Perinatal Simulation. Both of these additions 

to Swedish, and to the medical resources of the 

Pacific Northwest, were strongly supported by 

philanthropic contributions. Each is an example 

of the role that philanthropy can play in 

sustaining a world-class health care provider. 

These accomplishments, and many other 

successes during this banner year, would not 

have been possible without the thousands of 

donors and volunteers who stepped forward 

and supported us. Throughout the pages of this 

report, you will find stories about 

some of the people who worked at our 

events, who served on our boards and 

committees, or who made donations, 

large and small, to keep Swedish 

strong and growing. Each of the 

16,857 gifts we received in 2008 was 

a gratifying and inspiring vote of 

confidence in Swedish – and each 

made an important contribution to our record 

year. To all who gave, I say thank you on behalf 

of the staff of Swedish Medical Center Foundation 

and everyone who works at Swedish. 

As we move into 2009, Swedish, like our 

community and our country, is facing financial 

and economic challenges that are unprecedented 

in more than a generation. I hope that, in the

as this great medical center confronts difficult

GLENN KAWASAKI, PH.D.,

Advanced Brain Tumor

multidisciplinary clinic 

opened by the Swedish 

Neuroscience Institute (SNI) 

in 2008 that provides brain 

tumor patients immediate

oncologists and radiologists, 

as well as the latest clinical 

trials and a comprehensive 

research laboratory. Dr. 

Kawasaki, who earned his 

Ph.D. in genetics, a master’s 

in business and a law degree, 

is an inventor with 14 U.S.

was a research fellow at

was determined to honor 

her daughter, BARBARA 

KADANER SIEGEL, whose 

life was cut short by a brain 

tumor. The only question 

was, “How?” An answer 

would come four years after 

Barbara’s 2004 death, when 

Marjorie learned of Swedish’s 

plan to establish a Center for 

Advanced Brain Tumor 

Treatment. “I knew then that 

we could make a difference 

in the lives of patients facing 

this devastating disease while 

also honoring the memory of 

my daughter,” says Marjorie, 

who made a $100,000 gift 

in early 2008 to support the 

Center’s research. A plaque 

in Barbara’s honor is now 

displayed in the brain cancer 

research laboratory.

diagnosis. With a gift of 

$50,000, they established 

the George Denison Fund 

for Children to support 

patients with young children 

who face significant 

financial difficulties while 

in treatment. The fund was 

created in memory of 

Elizabeth’s husband, George, 

who cared deeply for the 

well-being of children. 

This crucial fund provides 

financial assistance for 

child care, transportation, 

school supplies and other 

non-medical needs to help 

maintain living arrangements 

and provide comfort 

and stability to young 

family members indirectly 

affected by cancer.

Swedish’s Neonatal 

Intensive Care Unit (NICU) 

treats more than 800 sick or 

premature newborns each 

year. Now, thanks to a 2008 

fundraiser held at the home 

of Annette and Jim Alling, 

new moms visiting their 

babies in the NICU can 

sit and nurture them in 

Kangaroo recliners – the 

safest and most comfortable 

way to hold very small, or 

very sick, newborns. The 

$10,000 donated at the Fall 

fundraiser paid for four of 

the high-tech recliners, plus a 

laptop computer for expectant 

mothers to use while on 

bed rest. This fundraiser was 

organized by the MARCH OF 

DIMES PARENT MENTORS at

care and meet the needs of 

patients and employees alike. 

Of the total, $52,000 was 

pledged to support the Mother 

Joseph Clinic to help meet its 

need for new equipment, 

including a fluoroscope. The 

Swedish Foundation would 

like to extend its deep appreciation 

to Dr. Marty Siegel 

and his wife Mimi who made 

a challenge gift of $50,000 to 

match every new donor to the 

Swedish Fund Drive this year.

GIVES BACK 

When KAITLYN WIGGINS 

was born at Swedish, she 

spent a month in the 

Neonatal Intensive Care 

Unit (NICU) before becoming 

an inpatient in the 

Pediatrics ward. Happily, 

once Kaitlyn went home 

she did not experience any 

lingering health consequences. 

Kaitlyn is now an energetic 

11-year-old and a Junior Girl 

Scout. To earn her Bronze 

Award, the highest award 

for a Junior Girl Scout, 

Kaitlyn spent eight months 

collecting new stuffed animals 

for children receiving 

treatment at Swedish. She 

made posters, sent out postcards 

to friends and family, 

and even had a collection 

bin at a Starbucks. Thanks 

to Kaitlyn’s efforts, 63 

stuffed animals were given

a strong family connection 

to Swedish. His great 

uncle, Dr. Nils Johanson, 

founded Swedish Hospital 

in 1910. When making his 

estate plans, Pete included 

Swedish as a beneficiary. 

His bequest is his way of 

“giving back” and was made 

in honor of his grandfather, 

father and great uncle. 

Access to good healthcare 

is as important to Pete as it 

was to his relatives. “When 

something goes wrong with 

my health, Swedish is where 

I go,” he says. Pete is proud 

that his relatives have served 

on the Swedish board. His 

hobbies include writing, 

computers and “staying 

healthy.” Swedish is grateful 

for Pete’s bequest and we 

will do our part to keep

2008: 

AN EVENTFUL YEAR 

Thanks to the generous support of volunteers, 

sponsors and donors, Swedish Medical Center enjoyed 

an outpouring of financial support through four special 

events in 2008. 

23RD ANNUAL Celebrate SwediSh 

GALA AUCTION 

Presented by Wells Fargo and chaired by Kim and 

Todd Strumwasser, M.D., 900 guests enjoyed live and silent 

auctions, dinner, dancing and entertainment at the Sheraton 

Seattle Hotel. Each year, proceeds benefit Swedish’s charity 

care program and a specific Fund-A-Need project. Celebrate 

Swedish raised $4.3 million through generous corporate and 

community donors. Thanks to a $2 million gift from David 

and Sandra Sabey and Family, as well as numerous other 

corporate and individual donors, the 2008 Fund-A-Need 

initiative raised $3.3 million to fund the creation of the 

Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment at the 

Swedish Neuroscience Institute. 

14 TH ANNUAL SwediSh Summerun 

A record 3,400 community members participated 

in the 10K run or 5K walk/run, helping the Swedish 

SummeRun reach its highest fundraising total of 

more than $550,000. Since its inception, the event has 

raised more than $3.5 million to support the Marsha 

Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research. Started by 

Swedish oncologist Saul Rivkin, M.D. in memory of his 

wife Marsha, the Swedish SummeRun raises vital funds 

to support the work of the Marsha Rivkin Center. A 

partner with Swedish and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer 

Research Center, the Marsha Rivkin Center funds 

research to reduce suffering, improve treatment and 

ultimately cure ovarian cancer. 

Seattle brain CanCer walk 

To raise funds for brain cancer research and 

increase awareness about the disease, the first-ever 

Seattle Brain Cancer Walk took place at the Mercer 

Island High School track. Organized by a dedicated 

group of volunteers and chair Kimberly Hogle, the 

event raised $120,000 in its inaugural year to support 

the Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment at the 

Swedish Neuroscience Institute. Going forward, the 

Seattle Brain Cancer Walk will be an annual Swedish 

event to continue raising funds for brain cancer research. 

13TH ANNUAL women’S wellneSS lunCheon 

Nearly 900 people attended the Women’s Wellness 

Luncheon in support of the Swedish Cancer Institute 

and the Cancer Patient Assistance Program. Together 

with community sponsors, luncheon guests raised 

more than $288,000 to help women undergoing treatment 

for cancer with non-medical financial assistance. 

Chaired by Jean Bauer Viereck, the 2008 luncheon 

included a presentation by prominent health care 

professional and cancer survivor, C.J. Taylor as the 

event’s featured speaker. Taylor inspired guests with 

her humor and strength of spirit. Swedish oncologist 

Kristine Rinn, M.D. updated guests on the latest technologies 

and treatments in women’s cancer care.
