and is active in medical affairs.
Martha has 3 sons. One is in business,
and 2 are attorneys, following the
profession of their late father,
William, who was a noted attorney
and renowned judge in South Bend,
IN. Recently a “Gala Birthday Party”
celebrating Martha’s 90th birthday
was held, with over 45 guests
enjoying the occasion. Happy birthday
to Martha, who was described in our
Regis College Yearbook as “a flash of
red hair and a peal of laughter.” ¶
Gladys Kiely McMakin enjoys living in
her family home in Arlington, MA,
with a most beautiful manicured
garden. Her son, Matthew, resides
with her in the home, giving Gladys
great care and comfort and taking
over household responsibilities.
Gladys’s 5 children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren are most
attentive, visiting and frequently
calling. Gladys’s pet companions for
many years are Dudley and Ilse;
sadly, Ilse has been hospitalized with
a fatal condition. We were delighted
that Gladys attended the Regis
College Alumni Weekened on May 22,
2010, with her daughter Marcie.
Gladys and I represented our 70th
Reunion Class. ¶ I called Yvonne
Normandeau Oswald and her husband,
Norbert, answered the phone. I knew
that Norbert was a West Point
graduate, and I commented that I was
a military wife for 15 years, until my
Robert retired from military service.
We enjoyed chatting about military
life long, long ago. Yvonne and
Norbert reside in a retirement
military residence in Melbourne, FL.
When I chatted with Yvonne she had
just returned from a two-week
hospitalization. Being quite weak and
not feeling well, she was hoping to
regain her strength while getting
better with care and relaxation at
home. I will say a little prayer that
you have a quick recovery. ¶ Helen
Hogan Sullivan and her husband,
John, a physician, resided in Carney,
NJ, with their family for many years.
Upon retiring, John and Helen
returned to their summer home in
Eastport, ME. Their 4 sons and
daughter had established homes with
their families before their parents’
retirement to Eastport. I called Helen
in March in reference to our 70th
Reunion. Due to distance and medical
problems, she was unable to attend.
On April 7, I received a call from her
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Dan Sullivan,
that Helen had passed away peacefully
surrounded by her loving family.
Helen is rejoicing with her husband in
their heavenly home in the presence
of the Lord. ¶ There was a beautiful
tribute to the late S. Therese Higgins
’47 by special assistant to the
president M.J. Doherty ’67, Ph.D,
entitled “All, and in All” printed in
Regis Today (spring and summer
2010). ¶ In March I had sent a
personal letter to Janet Ahern Rink in
reference to our Reunion May 21–22
at Regis. Janet said she was disappointed
that she was unable to be
present at this happy event. In April,
I called Janet at her
residence, “The Malter
Place,” in Wilmette, IL,
concerning our Reunion
details. We discussed her
daughters, Holly, who
resides in Elkhart, IN, and
Linda, in Oregon. They are
most attentive to their
mother, calling and
visiting, including their
children and grandchildren.
Janet requested that
I call again soon, and I am
planning to in the near
future. ¶ Margaret Madden
Foley, aka Midge, continues to live
by the seashore in Rye, NH, happy
indeed that her daughter Patricia
lives with her, caring for her needs as
well as providing wonderful companionship.
Due to an eye problem, Midge
no longer paints or writes poetry,
many poems being published. Midge
has 5 children, 14 grandchildren, and
6 great-grandchildren, many of them
living in different parts of the U.S.
The Foley clan frequently visits and
calls Midge, a happy loving family.
Midge commented she does not sing
very often. At Regis a most talented
and beautiful singer … “Indian Love
Calls” always requested. ¶ Alice V.
Herlihy continues to enjoy living in
the family homestead in Florence,
MA. She retired from the family’s
successful retail business in Florence
many years ago. Presently, due to
breathing difficulties, she is now on
oxygen, which restricts her interests
and activities. As an “EC” receiving
major at Regis, she was a volunteer
for the Pioneer Group creating
“Buy-A-Bear” doll-like creations for
thousands of needy children and
senior citizens. Although curtailed
by her medical condition, she has
continued assisting the Pioneer
Group in certain easy phases. I chat
frequently with Alice, always in a
happy and friendly mood, particularly
in Regis affairs. ¶ Geraldine Burke
Morrill continues to reside in
Plantation Village in Wilmington,
NC, a beautiful retirement community,
enjoying many cultural and civic
activities. Gerrie is again the winner
of the annual Spelling Bee at the
Plantation. One more contest at
another community and Gerrie will be
number-one speller. Gerrie is involved
with her 6 children, as several family
members live in the Wilmington area,
and calls and visits the Morrill family
throughout the U.S. Gerrie has
continued her friendship with
Barbara Schiltzer since college days.
A yearly reunion of the Morrill family
is a very happy and gala event. ¶ Mary
Sampson Schmidt has resided in San
Jose, enjoying the sunny California
weather, for many years. A recent
family reunion was celebrated in a

to celebrate her
75th Reunion
beautiful seaside hotel in California.
The gala affair honored their loving
mother for her continued love and
devotion to her family. Mary has
continued her friendship since college
days with Marion Quinn Clancy, Ruth
Ferraro Tobin, and the late Ruth
Monahan Savage. They all were
bridesmaids at Mary’s wedding at
St. Aidan’s Church in Brookline, MA,
during the early war years. Mary’s
interest in Regis affairs has continued
since 1940. ¶ Many months ago,
Marion Quinn Clancy was seriously
injured in a fall. After a long hospitalization
and rehab, she has recently
returned to her Hull, MA, home with
continued care and physical therapy.
Marion is happy to be in her seaside
home, enjoying frequent strolls along
the Hull ocean walkway with her
walker—use of a cane is anticipated.
Known as the Clancy Singing Group,
Marion and her late husband and
children were well-known professional
singers. Of their 9 children, sadly 3
have passed away, and their families
are dedicated with love and devotion
to their lovely mother. ¶ Barbara
Norton Schiltzer attended the Reunion
Weekend 2010. The Golden Tower
Luncheon in the beautiful College
Hall was attended to capacity with
classes from 1935 to the present.
Barbara and I represented our class
of 1940 with our daughters. At our
table was Eleanor Ryan ’39, Alice
Sullivan Sheehan ’42 with friend Nan,
and Mary Good ’42. President Mary
Jane England enjoyed sharing her
lunch at our table. Barbara has
resided in Framingham, MA, for the
last 43 years. Despite 3 hospitalizations
in 2009, Barbara looks great
and is enjoying her family. She has
interests in local and world news, and
enjoys reading Regis Today. Barbara
as a student at Regis was involved in
many class activities and had a great
