9 USBi Optional Computer USBInterfaceFigure 9.1CMSCMS-USBi: A USB Interface Unit for theThis is a ready-made solution for easily connecting a computer tothe CMS. It comprises a USB:RS485 interface with a terminal blockpre-wired with the CMS cable. An extra terminal block is providedfor any customer wiring to external devices. An external DC adaptercan be used to power the complete system, or if the computer isalways connected during use, power can be taken directly from theUSB cable. Note: Computer should have mains power applied at alltimes.Detailed installation and usage instructions are provided in the separateproduct user guide.24 USBi Optional Computer USB Interface
10 Remote ControlThe CMS can be controlled using the remote control facility includedin the CMS-View software package, installed on a PC. Alternativelycustomers can use their own software running on a PCor PLC.Since the CMS includes a built-in datalogging memory, operatorscan make use of the remote control facility in one of two ways:• Direct Online OperationThe CMS is permanently connected to a computer while testsare carried out. The operator can set parameters, type a labeland initiate the test. They can then monitor the progress of eachtest. Each test result is displayed and downloaded into the testdatabase as it is completed.• Disconnected OperationHere the CMS operates as a stand alone item, performing testson a schedule or under external command from a control system.If a permanent record of the results is needed, an operator canoccasionally connect a computer and use CMS-View to downloadthe accumulated test data.10.1 Computer ConnectionThe connection is made using an RS485 adaptor connected to thePC. Either a USB:RS485 or a RS232:RS485 converter can be used,depending on the the interface available on the computer. The CMS-USBiRemote Control 25
