Remember the good
ole’ days? So often, these
words are spoken in the
town of Blythewood;
maybe as a means of
preserving what use
to be-or maybe they
are spoken as a means
of commemorating
the heritage of a small
town.
Carolyn (Beckham)
Lee remembers the days
of Blythewood when
there were no stop lights
or traffic. Although she
grew up in Winnsboro,
in the late 30’s, she was
one of the students rezoned
for Holly Grove
School (off Highway
321) in Blythewood.
“There weren’t enough
students in the school,”
she said. “Several
people were sent there
to prevent the school
from closing.”
Carolyn remembers
the fun she had in school
with her classmates. “I
remember being sent out
the class with another
Blythewood resident
for playing around. It
happened quite often.

out in the hallway than
we did in class. When
the teacher figured that
out, we were sent to
separate places.”
After completing
grammar school,
Carolyn moved on to
the original Blythewood
High School (currently
Blythewood Academy on
Wilson Boulevard). The
first Miss Blythewood
High School pageant
was held while Carolyn
attended there, and she
was crowned the first
Miss Blythewood High
School. “One of my most
memorable moments of
Blythewood High School
was being crowned the
first Miss Blythewood
High School in 1941,”
she said. “We didn’t have
much back then, and I
didn’t even have a dress

for the competition. My
home economics teacher,
Ms. Gilcrist, gave me
a dress. I have never
forgotten her kindness. It
was an exciting time for
me, and a memory I have
passed to my children
and grandchildren.”
After high school,
Carolyn attended Lander
University and studied
business. After college,
she went to work for
Southern Bell and fell in
love and married Willie
(Bill) Lee. “The first time
I met him,” she said, “he
told me he wanted me
to be the mother of his
children. I didn’t know it
would become a reality.”
Carolyn and Willie
had six children: five
boys and one girl.
“My employment days
dissolved,” she said,
“and I became a full time
mother and housewife.”
One of Carolyn’s
favorite things to do
as a teenager and adult
was dancing. “We would
have dances at my
grandmother’s house,”
she said. “I loved to do
the jitterbug.”
Although Carolyn
is now in her 80’s,
dancing is still a part
of her life. “I try to go
every Friday night at the
Senior Center,” she said.
“Forget the cane, I’m
going to dance.”
Carolyn has lived
to see the changes
and evolvement of
Blythewood, but
unfortunately, she has
dealt with the loss of
her husband and three
other family members:
her husband passed in
1992, her daughter was
killed in a car wreck in
1979, her son passed in
1990 and her grandson
was taken at the age of
sixteen in a motorcycle
accident. “Memories are
a way for me to hold on to
the way things were, and
to the loved ones I have

A Year After Market Low, How Should You Invest?
It’s been about a
year since stock prices
hit their low point
during the long bear
market. Since then, of
course, we’ve seen a
big rally, but some of
the decisions you made
when the market was
at its lowest point may
still be affecting your
portfolio’s performance
and prospects. So now
that we’ve reached the
one-year anniversary of
the market bottom, it’s a
good time to see where
you are today and how

the question was, “What
is African American
music?”
Which of the following
would be your answer: A.
the smooth tunes of rhythm
and blues, B. the funky
beats and vocal styling’s
of rap music, C. Michael
Jackson, D. James Brown
and the jazz movement or
E. all of the above.
If you answered E, all
of the above, then you are
correct. African American
music incorporates all of
those genres and people
as well as many more
such as Go-Go music and
its “Godfather” Chuck
Brown, Soul music, the
great James Brown, and of
course gospel music and its
greats like Kirk Franklin.
Thanks to my African
American music teacher,
I have quickly learned that
African American music is
one of the most dynamic
and successful forms of
music in existence.
Since African American
music’s first appearance,
it has developed from the
music of slaves and minstrel
shows to a multimilliondollar
industry that
saturates every aspect of
our culture.
Prior to taking African
American music class

when asked the question,
“what is African American
music?” I would not
have been able to tell
you. African American
music has become such
an influential part of
culture as a whole; it is
virtually impossible to
define African American
music as distinctly African
American.
However, thanks to the
seven essential elements of
African American music,
making this determination
has become much easier.
The first of these seven
elements is the importance
of movement, which is
exemplified every time
an African American
performs. You will never
see an African American
stand ridged in one place
while performing.
The second of these
elements is the blurring
of the line between the
performer and the audience,
which is exemplified when
the performer gets the
audience involved in the
performance - by either
pulling them on stage or
using call-in-response
techniques, which is
actually the fifth essential
element of African
American music: when
the performer says “wave
your hands in the air like
you just don’t care” and

you can prepare for
tomorrow.
In looking back at
the market depths of a
year ago, it’s important
to note that we didn’t
get there overnight.
In fact, stock indices
had fallen about 50
percent since hitting
their all-time high in
October 2007, which
means that investors
had gone through a
16-month downturn.
Consequently, it’s not
surprising that many
people, tired of seeing

he is singing about while
not deciding what type of
movement he will perform
next until he is already
performing it.

music is also known
for contestation or
competition.
If you have ever seen
a step show or free style
competition, then you
already know that the
beats, words, and sounds
in African American
music are often used to
compete with other artist
of a similar style.
The seventh, and
final element of African
American music, that is
used to define African
American music as an
elastic sense of time- which
means that while everyone
is enjoying the music it
does not matter when the
performance will end.
An elastic sense of
time is most often seen
in African American
church services because
the congregation attends
church, knowing that they
could be worshiping the
Lord for one hour to ten
hours, depending on the
spirit leads.
African American music
is by far one of the most
interesting and dynamic
musical styles present in
the United States today and
thanks to the hard work
of my African American
music teacher, I now have
a better understanding of
why.

Our Changing Times:
Writers & Dieters: Overcoming Challenges
They come to my course from all walks
of life, people who want to write in a
meaningful way.
Mostly, they want to write a book;
magazine features don’t interest them
although they should. Features offer a
fertile training ground, a starting point.
I’m teaching an evening course this fall
that helps people write in a telling way. At
least I hope it does.
The first exercise I put aspiring
writers through is “Brutally Honest Soul
Searching.”
I have them write answers to a series
of questions. “Why is writing a book so
important to you?” is one such question.
The answers reveal a lot about human
nature.
Another question is “What bad things
might happen if you don’t write your
book?”
The answers draw back the curtain on
human desires and fears. “I’ll always feel
like a failure.” “I’ll sink into mediocrity
and lose the part of myself that snaps,
crackles, and pops.”
Another question, a tough one, is “Do
you have what it takes to pull off writing
a book?” They always answer, “yes,” and
so they take my course and others, make
notes, and dream of writing a book.
And they like to talk about it more
than anything, but they never seem to get
around to the heavy lifting: writing itself.

It’s much like people who talk about
going on a diet.
The actual start is always tomorrow.
The day that might redirect their destiny
never arrives for many, but they’ll study
diets that offer fast results; diets that fall
out of favor even faster.
People fall head over heels for fad diets
just as aspiring writers fall for writing
gimmicks such as mini-lessons, writing
workshops, and support groups.

hear comments from Richland County Sheriff Leon
Lott, followed by the play "Lost Dreams," written

discussion, where attendees can ask question.

Motorcycle Ride to Benefit Animal

Have you ever seen
a stray animal and
wondered what would
happen to them if no one
took care of them? Have
you been to the shelters
to see dogs that might
get put to sleep if no one
adopts them?
Mary Escue began a
non-profit organization,
“SQ Rescue,” over
twenty years ago to
help stray animals and
animals that might be
put to sleep find a loving
home.
Mary and a friend
came upon five wild
dogs in the Summit
area when it was being
built some years ago.
The dogs would have
nothing to with Mary
or her friend. So Mary
began feeding them, and
after two or three weeks,
the dogs finally came to
her and befriended her.
She decided to try and
find them a home, and
from there, SQ Rescue
began.
Now, SQ Rescue

gathers dogs from kill
shelters, county shelters,
and of course, strays. If
the dog is a stray, they try
to find the owner first.
If the owner cannot be
found, SQ Rescue sends
the dogs to a veterinarian
for a complete checkup,
including shots,
heartworm testing and
spaying or neutering.
The dogs are then
available for adoption
through a local pet store,
(Pet Smart on Two Notch
Road), several Saturdays

BMS Sponsors Book Collection Drive
Blythewood Middle School is
excited to report that we collected
2,067 books during our book
drive. For one week the BMS
book club members collected the
donated books during homeroom.
The 6th grade donated 897 books,
7th grade collected 529 books and
the 8th grade collected 641 books.
Mrs. Whisenant’s 8th grade
homeroom won the sweet treat
with the donation of 216 books.
The majority of the books were
donated to a local charity called
Happy Wheels at Palmetto Health
Children’s Hospital. Happy
Wheels distributes toys and books
to pediatric patients each week.
BMS also donated the rest to local
charities that help women and
children.
BMS Hosts Character Awards Breakfast
On Friday, February 26th, Blythewood Middle
School held its Character Awards Breakfast.
Twenty students were honored for consistently
demonstrating good character and positive
life skills. The students recognized were Jacob
Davis, Jessica Lorenzetti, Rachel Koerwer,
Paige Hall, Mikeus Taylor, Dakota Huntsman,
Jonathan Grant, Sarah Dorsey, Jayson Jeffers,
Bijonie Jones, Mary Hayden Smith, Raen See,
Leah Gunter, Katherine Turner, Justin Davis,
Patrick Reid, Trent Hancock, Alexis Kiser,
ShaRayia Stewart, and Morgan Fredrickson.
BMS has been recognized by the National

The Blythewood Bengal Boys Golf Team won the Patriot
Invitational in Summerville at Wescott Plantation with a
team score of 616. There were 25 teams participating. Three
Bengals also made the All Tournament Team consisting of the
top seven players: Seniors Josh Hinson and Parker Allen, and
Junior Shane Rogan. The Junior Varsity team also won their
division with three in the top seven: Bryce Howell, William
Hinson, Will Bonneville and Ben Jansen. The Bengal Boys
Golf Team is hosting the Capital Classic Golf Tournament on
March 11 and 12 at Wildwood and Woodlands Country Clubs.

the Blythewood Lions Club, a former
member of the Columbia and Lexington
Barbershop Choruses, and for many
years a faithful contributor of platelets
to the American Red Cross. Mr. Smith
retired from Seibel’s Bruce and Policy
Management Systems Corporation after
43 years of dedicated service. He was

Leadership Academy at Killian
Elementary Collects Food Goods
for the Needy
In keeping with the tradition of helping others, Killian
Elementary Leadership Academy continued in their
efforts in helping to fight hunger by participating in the
Souper Bowl of Caring. Killian LTD, has participated in
the “Souper Bowl of Caring” for the past three years. They
started their canned food drive on February 1 which led up
to the big game Super Bowl 42 and ended it on February
10. Killian proceeds were given to Mrs. Ambra McGuinn
of Harvest Hope Food Bank during a presentation that
included Cool Can Sam. Killian Leadership Academy
students were thrilled to help in this worthy cause in
fighting hunger within their community.

Competition
The BHS Thespian Society participated in the
Palmetto Dramatics Association/SC Thespian
Society Festival at USC Aiken.
The production of the play, “Pumpkin Patch”
earned a rating of “Excellent,” while two lead
actresses, Melyssa Eargle and Christina Clay, earned
Honorable Mentions for their work in the show. The
set earned special recognition again this year, as
well.
Other standout performances include Kashaad
Kraus and Raashad Roberts’ duet scene (“Superior”),
Jevarr Oree’s solo musical perfomance ( “Superior”),
and Clyde Moser, Christina Clay and Valerie
Espinosa’s group musical performance.

survived; the book itself is a lesson
in survival.
However, the story is not only about
survival, it is also about hope.
Sandra manages to escape the
abusive relationship and survive to
regain her dignity, rebuild her life
and find the true meaning of love.
The book then becomes one of hope
and inspiration to abused women
everywhere.
That is the purpose of sharing
a personal story like this with the
world; people can get a better look
at how horrible sexual abuse and

Back when a dime was a dollar, a person could do a lot with just a little in places like ‘Wilson’s
5-10-25.’
Prior to becoming Blythewood’s Wishin’ Well, the building was also used as a post office, library,
grocery store and even a part time florist. As progress trickled into Blythewood’s business district,
the little wooden building was replaced by a modern material…cold concrete block.
The Wishin’ Well had numerous eye openers for the community’s younger shoppers. There were
things like pencils, paper, shoestrings, jump ropes, paper dolls- even fireworks and plastic sling

The greatest asset The Wishin’ Well had to offer was Mr. Wilson’s ability to dissect a dollar so a

he said, “and my wife
had wanted a ‘lap dog’
for quite some time. I
called her, and she came
to the Coliseum to look
at the dogs. We adopted
the shih tzu, and Bo has
been part of our family
ever since. Up until that
day of the hockey game,
I never knew SQ Rescue
existed; much less what
they were all about.
“When I realized that
SQ Rescue was a small
rescue organization with
limited funds,” Reggie
continued, “I wanted
to organize a fund
raiser to assist with the
costs of veterinary care
and arranging foster
homes.”
“Mrs. Escue seems to
always pull each needy
animal through and find
them a ‘forever’ home,
even though her funds
are limited,” he said.

you write and a bit more
text accumulates.
Dieting and writing,
essentially, require a
lifestyle change. That’s
what make each so
difficult. The dieter must
avoid foods that sabotage
his best efforts; foods he
happens to love.
The writer must wall
himself off from things
and those who would take
up his time; people whose
company he enjoys.
Isolation.
It’s the only way to
control time, a writer’s
true raw material.
The late Jim Kilgo,
who taught me English
at Georgia, told me
people caused his greatest
problems as a writer. All
the interruptions.
In writing, you have to
go it alone to get anything
done. Some writers live by
strict schedules and avoid
people. Some turn off their
telephones.
Some write seven days a
week, fueled by coffee and
adrenaline.
The good ones dedicate
themselves to their
mission. They write sitting
at a desk, on top of a desk,
and lying in bed. They
don’t resort to the common
time.”
They make the time.
And they do what it takes.
When he was in the
Soviet Union’s prison
system, the great writer,
Alexander Solzhenitsyn,
did not write down his
thoughts on those rare
occasions pen and paper
were available.
To do so was to risk his
life or suffer more severe
conditions and longer
sentences. Solzhenitsyn
wrote nonetheless—in his
head.
Over eight years,
he memorized tens of
thousands of lines. After
he was released from
prison, he transcribed them
in secret.
Writers create a world
in which they minimize
failure and maximize
success, and what interests
me most about a writer’s
world is the writing
environment itself.
That’s where the rubber
hits the road.
Writers in the free world
work face few constraints,
so it’s interesting to see
what their workspace is
like.
It can range from a

cluttered office to a rustic
cabin to a palatial beach
home to a corner in a house.
They generally set it up in
a way that reinforces their
discipline.
A few years ago, I
drove to Flat Rock, North
Carolina, to tour the home
of a writer, dead now for
42 years.
Carl Sandburg was a
newspaperman before
becoming a full-time writer
of poetry history, literature,
and other genres.
He won the Pulitzer
Prize in 1940 for Abraham
Dieting and writing, essentially, require a
lifestyle change. That’s what make each so

his time; people whose company he enjoys.

Five years later he bought
his farm in Flat Rock, North
Carolina, “Connemara.”
More than 10,000 books
filled his home. That didn’t
surprise me.
His routine worked
superbly. He slept late while
his wife and daughters
took care of chores and
tended the livestock.
That did surprise me. He
exercised each morning.
He worked alone late into
the night and did so for 22
years in a simple office.
He was fond of using fruit
cases as office furniture
and rearranged them until
they suited him.
His studio, if you will,
is cozy, filled with light,
and overflowing with the
tools of the writer’s trade;
files, folders, chairs, a
briefcase, note cards, and
reference books. There’s
a rolling chair that can
easily scoot over to an
old typewriter.
From such a place, comes
crafted imaginings. All
that’s necessary are time,
isolation, and discipline.
He was 89 and still
writing when he died at
Flat Rock on July 22,
1967. The notes, papers,
and letters on his desk
make it appear as if he’ll
return any minute.
In the North Carolina
mountains, Sandburg’s
writer’s diet of discipline,
isolation, and a routine
worked, and intellectually,
he cut a lean, strong
figure.
I doubt Sandburg
dieted food-wise. All
photos portray him as
slender, and I know from
his achievements that
discipline and hard work
were deeply ingrained.
I am sure that if he were
writing today neither cell
phones, emails, business
lunches, nor visitors would
distract him.
Writers, unlike wouldbe
dieters, understand
everything about the word,
“no,” and they unwittingly
offer them a model. It’s
not a stretch ... Food for
thought you could say.
