Technical Description
Endless research, actual photos, and the written word from the 1860s helped create characters with a wide
Cops Redesign
February 3, 2012
Synopsis
Jason returns to LA from Portland and informs Melanie the “Dream of the 1890s” is alive in Portland. The
Mayor tasks Fred and Carrie with redesigning the Portland Police Department's uniforms and image; A man
donates his old records to an elite preschool, but protective parents question his sonic sensibilities.
Technical Description
There are a variety of characters played by Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein featuring hair, wigs and
facial hair we worked with to define the characters and make them truly unique. With a small budget and
collaborative imagination we were able to bring these “Portlandians” to life, particularly in the “Dream of the
1890s”, where we accurately depicted the style of the era using beards, mustaches and wigs while
preserving the spirit of modern Portland.
Technical Description
Debra Messing's 3/4 piece was colored, cut, and styled to match her hair. Anjelica Huston's lace-front wig
was cut, styled, and rooted. Clip-in extensions helped create current looks for Katherine McPhee and
Megan Hilty. Men’s hairstyles included both period and contemporary grooming. Broadway-style production
Synopsis
Spartacus leads survivors through the woods, but Crixus gets separated and returns to a place of past
suffering. Lucretia pries into Ilithyia’s affairs, seeking influence with a powerful Roman.
Technical Description
The natural more feral looks of the rebels hair makes for a spectacular contrast with the opulence of the
roman wigs and hair styling. The shapes and structures of the roman hair styles are representative of
images taken of Roman busts from around the year 73 BCE. Not always flattering and sometimes very
harsh, this period could also be very elegant and beautiful. A person's hair was indicative of one's class or
Technical Description
Style, power, classic elegance: who comes to mind? Howard Hughes; James Bond; Clark Gable. Harvey’s
hair is styled after these iconic figures: hair long on top with very short back and sides. Royal Crown
pomade combed upward and back, gives it a groomed, crisp, and unique style.
Technical Description
This episode broke from our usual format and was shot to look like a reality show. To give the flavor of the
Technical Description
1920s in its full glory! Lace wigs for our principals and really good stock wigs for all of our background
actors. Every actor on screen was prepped, cut, marcel waved and styled. There were several variations on
Technical Description
We looked to today's chic Washington for inspiration. Julia is in a wig that I cut in layers to frame her face
and not too short, to ensure versatility. It was important as well to be able to give her up-dos. I wrapped her
Technical Description
THE WALKING DEAD takes place over a very short period of time. Maintaining continuity for our casts, yet
keeping it realistic.
I wanted their look hot and sexy, tattered and torn, not looking like Hollywood hair.
Technical Description
I waited to learn what the wardrobe department was designing for the cast in a scene that was a
the show’s title character to look like a judge from the late-1790s or early-1800s. I designed and cut up a
wig and sewed it directly onto the Wilfred dog suit.
March 10, 2012
Synopsis
A behind-the-scenes look at John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, from the selection of Alaska
Governor Sarah Palin (Julianne Moore) as McCain’s running mate to their general election defeat sixty days
later. GAME CHANGE, adapted from the non-fiction bestseller, offers a unique glimpse into the inner
workings of an historic campaign.
Technical Description
GAME CHANGE actors needed to match their real life characters. My techniques included cutting and wigs.
Actors were cut, styled, dyed, bleached and highlighted. Julianne, Ed and Sarah wore wigs. Ed's hair was
bleached out and then colored platinum so it wouldn't show under the wig. Sarah's hair was wrapped tightly
and gaf quatted around the hairline and the wig was glued down. The wig's roots were lifted to maintain
natural look and movement.
Great Expectations (Masterpiece)
April 1, 2012 - April 8, 2012
Synopsis
Gillian Anderson and Douglas Booth star in Charles Dickens' tale of an orphan's sudden expectations of
wealth and true love. Complicating the picture are an escaped convict, a wily lawyer, a deranged rich
woman, and a cold-hearted beauty.
Technical Description
The Aim: Portraying the idiosyncratic yet realistic look that reflected the extraordinary range of Dickens
characters. Trauma, experience, social standing and personal journey can manifest themselves physically. I
was able to achieve this by using bald caps, wigs, pre-setting and dyeing hairpieces, weft, apollo knots,
twists, curls, tonging with marcel irons, hot sticks and making hair accessories. These techniques helped
me create the simmering melting pot of early Victorian London.
Synopsis
The HATFIELDS & MCCOYS is the true American story of a legendary family feud, one that spanned
decades and nearly launched a war between Kentucky and West Virginia. The six-hour miniseries
showcases a cast led by Kevin Costner as Devil Anse Hatfield and Bill Paxton as Randall McCoy.
Technical Description
Reconstruction of the period through historical images, using the original tools of the time necessary to
reproduce a “natural” Victorian look. Many wore hair pieces and wigs and half wigs used on the actors to
recreate the original characters of the two families.Especially on some of the main actors, who went through
three different stages of aging along a period of 30 years, three different wigs were used to characterize
November 7, 2011 - November 12, 2011
satire on the emotional Hee-Hawification of America, set in a town so inbred, the folks have become almost
supernaturally wrong.
Technical Description
Many looks were portrayed for actors including Kristen Schaal, Heather Lawless and Patton Oswald for
which 15 customized wigs were built. The world within this “Holler” was brought to life, particularly in “Death
Sherlock: A Scandal In Belgravia (Masterpiece)
May 6, 2012
Synopsis
Sherlock and Watson are plunged into a case of blackmail involving crafty dominatrix Irene Adler, whose
motto is “know when you are beaten.” Seems she has incriminating photos of a British royal. Can she
outsmart Sherlock at his own game—and at a battle he is ill-prepared to wage: love?
Technical Description
The main focus was styling the character Irene Adler. Inspiration came from the 1940s and women of high
society in that era – in particular Wallis Simpson, who was very much a style icon of that time. I decided on a
modern slant to 40s hairstyle, one that would enhance the bone structure of the actress, but be a statement
of authority and power over her male clients.
January 29, 2012
Synopsis
Space Camp, a competitive educational program for gifted students. Mike believes it would be a great
learning experience. Facing obstacles getting there and the actual program – they excel, teaching
themselves and others surprising lessons.
Technical Description
The true story was somewhat challenging as the Director did not want the actors to be carbon copies of the
people involved. Incorporating the 80s with a little mix of the 90s on our main actors, kept the background
true to the period. Working closely with costume and makeup to create a look that was believable, but not
distracting. We used a lot of old catalogs and yearbooks of the period for reference.
Technical Description
For make-up, the episode starts with a simple detail like dirt on workers’ hands. To capture the period, we
applied various colors to look old fashioned by smudging eyeliner and blotting and shaping the lips. A
rounded shape brow is key to this period. For the men, adding or removing facial hair was addressed by age
Cesare’s beloved Ursula has been killed so he recruits a band of cut-throat killers and mercenaries to
Technical Description
Several lead characters and day players required heavy beards. The beards were painstakingly applied
directly to the skin, without using lace, and curled and styled by hand. The Gasconne scouts and Cesare's
gang were another challenge; required to be bloody, scarred, and with rotten teeth. The overall effort was to
make it all very natural, so that any makeup was unnoticed. The upper class women were given rosy cheeks
and richly coloured eyelids, no mascara.
Castle
The Blue Butterfly
February 6, 2012
Synopsis
When Castle and Beckett investigate the murder of a treasure hunter, Castle becomes convinced that it is
linked to an unsolved mystery from 1947 involving a hardboiled private detective.
Technical Description
1947 was a time for beautiful makeup and hair; well groomed men and women and fine fashion. To replicate
this, I researched publications, photos and ads and then used current products to replicate these vintage
looks – the true reds and lip shapes, the colorations for eye makeup, liner, and brow shaping, the nails
polished with the ‘moon’ showing and the pigmented and flawless foundations. This was in contrast to
Beckett and Castle present day.
arrival will help further convince her family and friends that her new life approach is the right one, Sandy
proves not to be the friend Amy thought she was.
Technical Description
Sandy is covering up her true self. We used alcohol based effects color layered with traditional foundation
for the effect of broken out skin beneath makeup. For dewiness in the exercise and massage scenes, we
used Shea butter and water based gel. Helen's eyebrows were drawn at an upturned angle to suggest
Technical Description
Several challenges putting this episode together. As with season 1, we had an enormous number of
principal characters; also background/extras were in the hundreds, particularly in the land of 'Qarth' where
the 'look' was exotic, with delicate gold paint embellishment on the females. 'King's Landing' was also
challenging due to the number of characters.
September 25, 2011
Synopsis
In the hands of a brash young pilot and a rebellious head stewardess, Pan Am's state of the art Majestic
Clipper jetliner makes its maiden voyage from New York to London. The flight also represents freedom to
runaway bride Laura while her sister Kate is recruited to become a spy.
Technical Description
I created the make-ups for the Pan Am stewardesses with insight into the original
handbooks of Pan Am. I was fortunate to find various original footage and extensive
photos reflecting the early 60’s fashions. My research evolved as I studied looks of 1963 world travelers.
Influenced by exotic textures and hues of color from around the world, I then custom blended shades of eye
shadows, blushes and lip colors, applied luminous foundations and bold eyeliner.
Spartacus: Vengeance
Empty Hands
February 17, 2012
Synopsis
Spartacus leads survivors through the woods, but Crixus gets separated and returns to a place of past
suffering. Lucretia pries into Ilithyia’s affairs, seeking influence with a powerful Roman.
Technical Description
‘Vengeance’ took us away from the Arena and on the road as our hero’s were on the run.
The Make-up Design had to reflect this. The Gladiators, now not on display, needed to look less stylized
and more unkempt, showing a breakdown of the skin from the environment.
Our Romans, as always, gave us the chance for more extravagance and colour in the make-up design. This
was evident at the party in 204 ‘Empty Hands’.
between Mike and Rachel threatens to torpedo his case. Harvey’s history with opposing counsel creates
complications during a sweetheart merger between two global hotel chains.
Technical Description
The technique we used for this episode was clean beautiful skin. Gabriel and Patrick had very little base
and just colour correcting palette for balancing the skin tone and keeping them very natural, with translucent
powder to keep the shine down. Gina was a little more dramatic in her eye make-up, with a smokey look.
Meghan and Sarah have a more make-up look.
Technical Description
It’s Halloween time in Bon Temps - Ghosts, Goblins, Fairies, Phantasms, Werewolves, and Vampires OH
MY! To achieve the look of these characters, the following techniques and products were used...airbrushing,
stippling, shading, contouring, hand laid facial hair, pancake, aquacolor, tattoo transfers, alcohol activated
March 11, 2012
Synopsis
The group learns that someone dangerous may be on the loose near the farm. As night falls, Rick, Shane,
Daryl and Glenn comb the woods to handle the situation and keep the group safe.
Technical Description
The technique was creating a look for Shane and Rick with the bruising, blood and sweat that would stay in
place so we didn't have to walk in after every take but walk in maybe after every three or four takes. Using
skin illustraters to gel blood and laying a light layer of ultra wet on the skin and stippling baby oil on top with
a stipple sponge gave the look I wanted.
Hemingway & Gellhorn
May 28, 2012
Synopsis
A drama recounting one of the great love affairs of the 20th century - between literary giant Ernest
Hemingway (Clive Owen) and trailblazing war correspondent Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman). Their
passionate and tumultuous romance played-out against such epic backdrops as the Spanish Civil War,
World War II and beyond.
Technical Description
Hemingway spanned several continents and time periods. I used airbrushes to apply makeup for
concealing, adding color and correcting skin tones, followed with pressed powders popular in the 30s.
Matte Red Lipsticks matched blushers. Brows are painted in with tints. Liquid eyeliner and black mascara
thicken lashes. False eyelashes add drama. Contacts changed eye colors. Men's facial hair is shaped with
clippers. Dirt is applied by airbrush or sponges.
November 27, 2011
Synopsis
Mitch Albom has a pretty great life. Then Rabbi Lewis and Pastor Covington come into it and he realizes
something’s missing. Moving between their worlds – Christian and Jewish, African-American and white,
impoverished and privileged – Albom witnesses how these two different men not only live life, but celebrate
it.
Technical Description
In order to portray the time span between the three decades of this movie, I used RCMA age stipple for
Anika around the eyes, and for Deanna on her entire face. To de-age Martin, I used a facelift kit, and added
highlighting and contouring. During the drug use I hollowed out the orbital areas, reddened the nostrils,
dried the lips, and added a crack pipe burn on the mouths of Anika and Laurence.
January 29, 2012
Synopsis
Mike Kersjes is a special-education teacher who helps his students achieve their dream: attending NASA
Space Camp, a competitive educational program for gifted students. Mike believes it would be a great
learning experience. Facing obstacles getting there and the actual program – they excel, teaching
themselves and others surprising lessons.
Technical Description
I researched makeup appropriate for the era and region, taking into account that the characters were
students and teachers in a special education class, and chose an understated makeup strategy. The
humidity of the locations (North Carolina and Alabama), activities involved (swimming, food fight, Space
Camp, etc.) and the young actors’ skin conditions presented challenges my staff and I managed by careful
planning and product selection, allowing the actors to look and feel natural and comfortable.
Chris Lilley, returns in the new series ANGRY BOYS. The wildly inventive Lilley brings to life six characters;
twins Daniel and Nathan Sims, former Surfing Champion Blake Oakfield; US rapper S.mouse!; Japanese
mother and manager, Jen Okazaki; and Juvenile Justice Centre worker Ruth Sims, aka Gran.
Technical Description
For this episode of ANGRY BOYS, and the character of S.mouse, we had the challenge of changing the
“white” Writer/Director/Producer Chris Lilley into an African American rapper. I made subtle silicone
prosthetics made to exaggerate Chris' nostrils. Then a combination of tanning makeups, and spray tattoo
inks were used to create a realistic and believable African American skin tone.
Our design had to be subtle enough to carry over into the mid-world of Storybrooke with recognizable
Spartacus: Vengeance
Empty Hands
February 17, 2012
Synopsis
Spartacus leads survivors through the woods, but Crixus gets separated and returns to a place of past
suffering. Lucretia pries into Ilithyia’s affairs, seeking influence with a powerful Roman.
Technical Description
Prosthetics Design for ‘Vengeance’ moved into a new environment. Even though the Gladiators were not in
the Arena we still had to keep the fights and subsequent injuries interesting and exciting to watch. In
Episode 204 ‘Empty Hands’ the capture and death of Acer for party ‘entertainment’ meant we had to come
up with effects that we hadn’t before. The end result does help show the Romans dispassionate regard for
the Gladiators at its best.
