W ith spring just around the corner, we all look at our homes in a different light. We suddenly feel the urge to freshen up certain areas. Any realtor will quickly tell you that kitchens and bathrooms are the best areas to renovate when looking at resale value, so it is no surprise that many people will be looking to make the most of their kitchen renovation. However, for most, the hardest question is where to start. Here are a few tips to make the job a little less daunting. First, decide on a budget. Can you afford to gut the whole space and start all over? With this option, you have a clean slate to make decisions. If the budget is more restrictive it is possible to change a few surfaces and create a new look without breaking the bank. Once the budget is determined, the choices can begin. Cabinetry Cabinetry is often one of the larger surfaces in the kitchen. They are often the first thing that a person sees and utilizes. Take a good look at the cabinets, especially by the knobs and handles. Do cabinets look dated? Has the finish worn well? There are companies who can come in and reface the door and door fronts without replacing the whole cabinet. If you are replacing all the cabinetry, you need to consider the following questions. What style are you looking for? Do you prefer a traditional or contemporary look? Are you looking for a painted or stained finish? Cabinetry is available at many different price points so it is helpful to show the cabinetmakers what style you prefer and what final look you are going for. Look through style magazines and books to find something that suits your final design. Bringing them to the cabinetmaker will help to narrow down your options more quickly. Countertop The countertop is another large surface area that can be replaced to refresh the kitchen space. There are many options to choose from today. These include laminate, quartz and the very popular granite. 20 Kitchen Creations: Décor Tips for Renewing Your Kitchen Space Karen Delazzari Cozy Creations When choosing your counter surface, do some homework when it comes to the care of each surface. Granite needs to be sealed in order to preserve its finish. Laminate requires the use of a cutting board so that it is not scratched. Figure out which surface will work best for you and your family. When choosing the colour of your countertop, have your cabinetry colour with you so you know that the colours and patterns will work well together. Flooring Flooring is no longer limited to the laminate that our grandmother had in her kitchen. There is a wide array of ceramics, laminates and hardwoods available today. When choosing a floor, consider who will be standing on it the most. Diabetics, for instance, find it difficult to stand on ceramic for great lengths of time. Consider putting down mats with foam under the pad for comfort if the surface is not forgiving on the legs or feet. When choosing the floor, have your countertop and cabinet samples with you. The most important decision is making sure that the colour, scale and proportion of the countertop match that of the floor. Patterns and colour should be complementary to each other. Place the samples on top of each other when deciding on patterns to see if they are fighting with each other. Hardware Hardware is a great way to update cabinetry when the cost of replacement is out of the budget. A simple change such as finish (brass to pewter for instance) can renew a space even with the existing cabinet colour. Also, look at changing the faucets as well. Replacing a dripping tap offers other savings down the road as well as updating your space. There are options to consider when looking at finishes but remember darker finishes sometimes require more consistent cleaning. Paint Paint is often your final decision when renovating any space. There are literally thousands of colours to choose from, but you do not have to feel overwhelmed by the options. Take all the surfaces that you have chosen, such as countertop, cabinetry and flooring. Look for the common denominator. Is there a colour family that seems to be consistent? Do you want the room to have contrasting features or do you want a more harmonious flow? Is a focal wall of colour or wallpaper an option? If these options still leave you scratching your head as to where to start, there are professionals who can help make the decision-making process much easier. They are trained to look for scale and proportion as well as assisting in choosing just the right colour for the walls. They can work with even the smallest budget and can offer assistance in deciding just where to put those decorating dollars. KITCHEN CABINETS & VANITIES AT A BUDGET YOU CAN AFFORD!
