It hasn't been long but I can't seem to forget winter's
winds chilling us to our bones when we stepped out to face the
day with pale or white faces, either because of the weather or
our own personal problems. The onset of spring and the
warmer weather seems to bring more happiness into our lives
and makes me more optimistic about the future when the
morning begins with bright sunlight.
Now, the days are knocking on our doors with the
fragrance of spring and the promise of prosperity. Let us enjoy
the coming days of economic revival along with a fresh and
glowing environment. Let us excel in our professions, be
energetic and motivated in whatever we do and have a positive
attitude towards life. Let us set examples for those who need
inspiration and motivation to gear up their lives and be
transformers of negative energies to positive in someone's life.
Recently, I came across an incidence of professional
neglect that cost someone's life. My purpose in mentioning this
is not to pinpoint someone, but to create a reason to tell folks to
not drag our personal problems into our professional lives. We
should perfect our professional duties and not be ignorant and
unprofessional in what we do.
I learned at an early age that if a job is worth doing, it's
worth doing well. If we can't deliver one hundred per cent, then
let's not do it at all. That's the only way we can keep freshness
and prosperity around us.
Let's enjoy the spring along with what we do.
Time
Spring
for
Written by Ivy Prosper
Spring is in the air and that means new things are
blossoming and fashion is changing. No more heavy
layers or bundling up for a blast of arctic cold. It's that
time of year when we embrace the sunshine and change
of season. With so many choices you don't have to feel
confined to one specific style trend. Many of the
fashions you'll see in stores are not too far off what we've
seen over the last few years.
When it comes to the fashion industry it's always
about transformation but, sometimes the more things
change the more they stay the same. Skinny jeans and
trousers have now become a staple item in almost
everyone's wardrobe. They're easily paired with blazers,
layered t-shirts, cardigans and light knit sweaters. This
fashion item is not going anywhere. But, with the skinny
dominating over the last few years it's only natural that
fashion is now embracing the exact opposite; bigger
silhouettes.
The wide leg and flared pant has come back into
fashion. This is a warm welcome for those whose figures
are not so flattered by the skinny trend. The wide leg jean
is currently the most popular of the new trend in retail
stores. When wearing a wider pant it's best to balance it
out with a close fitting top so you don't look so
overwhelmed; especially if you're petite. With a flared
pant you can also wear a long tunic top. This trend is part
of the seventies vibe that's making a comeback. It's a
mixture of New York City glam and the hippie bohemian
flavour. There are plenty of light, flowing blouses,
feminine floral patterns, and a definite trend in fluid
peasant sleeves.
Over the last few years we have seen the military
trend in fashion year after year. This spring is no
different. Utilitarian looks like double breasted jackets
with extra hardware detailing and zippers continue to be
popular. Wrap khaki dresses, slim fitting cargo pants and
army green, muted shades of sand are all the rage. Add a
pair of very strappy, caged, or studded shoe and you've
got a leg up this season.
First Lady, Michelle Obama is often seen wearing
the classic shift dress that has become a staple for ladylike
fashion. This spring it's time for a switch. The maxidress
is everywhere. It was a big hit in major cities like
New York all last summer and now makes its way into the
mainstream. Jump start your spring wardrobe by adding
this item as a staple you can wear at work or for a night
out. Top it with a cardigan or blazer at the office and add
jewelry to up the ante for a night out.
Denim and chambray are also on trend this season. Denim button down
shirts, worn with trousers and skirts are great for casual days. Lightweight
chambray dresses and tunics are also popular items for a relaxed daytime look.
Everything is in living colour for spring. The colour of the moment is
honeysuckle. It's a mix of pink and red creating a bold rich tone that is sure to
make a statement. Colours including bright greens, corals, regatta blue, oranges
and neon shades are lifting up moods. It's very exciting to see that colours in so
many vivacious shades have brought some life into fashion. With several hues to
choose from you can't go wrong. The choice is yours. That's the wonderful part
of this new season. Anything goes.
The British Boutique
The British Boutique is a unique store specializing in the sale
of imported goods from the British Isles. Their product lines from
England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales include everything from
distinctively British food and sweets, clothing, gift collectables and
jewellery, to official Coronation Street and Guinness memorabilia
as well as an assortment of 'cheeky' products.
The store was originally known as The Gift Boutique, a
general gift shop, when Vicki Lint opened in 2004, offering
specialized gift baskets. Vicki brought in traditional British sweets
for her baskets, and as customers began requesting more products
from 'home', it ultimately led to the start of the store becoming an
authentic British shop known today as the British Boutique.
Vicki was born in Canada. Her heritage is of Irish/German
descent. She is married to Mark Jones, an Englishman, who came
to Canada in 1975 from Manchester, along with his parents and
brother. After being closed owing to health reasons, the store was
reopened in November 2010 with Vicki introducing Susan Jones,
her mother-in-law, as a partner in what became a family-run
business.
The British Boutique is a great place to visit when looking for
something unique or when craving a taste of home. They offer
customized gift baskets to suit any occasion or price range and are
makes you feel good but also has many benefits to the
skin. It can be applied to the skin to help control and heal
acne, as well as an anti wrinkle cream, or to diminish fine
lines. It leaves your skin smooth and radiant. It is an
extremely universal essential oil when it comes to skin
There are many ways you can start benefiting and
easiest ways is to put 3 to 5 drops of pure essential oil
study was done among people over
90 years of age to find out what they
would do differently if they were
Agiven a second chance in life.
Among the top three responses was, “I wish I had
kept my teeth.” When asked why, they claimed
that dentures were not a good treatment option;
they had trouble with dentures not fitting, getting
loose over time and the lack of power to eat foods
they enjoyed when they had their natural teeth.
The maximum pressure that can be applied with
the best complete dentures is 50psi, with natural
teeth it's around 200psi!
In this issue, let's talk a little about what
happens when teeth are extracted. Every year a lot
of patients get teeth extracted, some necessary
but many elective. In our mouths we have the
upper and lower jaws. The jaws and teeth give
shape to our faces. Normally there is a layer of
bone on top of the jawbone that holds teeth.
When a tooth is extracted, a fair chunk of this
bone is lost, roughly 25 per cent in height and
thickness. It doesn't stop there. If nothing is
done, this bone keeps shrinking every year by a
millimeter. Over ten years one can lose as much
as a centimeter. This can change the shape of the
face. This is noticeable, especially among patients
who have complete dentures; their faces collapse
when they have their dentures out.
I have found that patients readily get molars
extracted because they are in the back and no one
can see them, but remember, more bone is lost
when they are gone; the bigger the teeth, the more
bone that is lost; patients are then forced to eat on
their front teeth. The front teeth are not meant
for chewing, only cutting and will break and wear
down over time from the excess forces and work
applied to them. A lot of times when patients do
realize what is happening, they have to either get
the rest of the teeth extracted, due to financial
reasons, which leads them to dentures, or get
partial dentures. Statistics show that only
Dr Sajid Syed
50 per cent of patients who get partial dentures like wearing them.
The best option is to get the missing teeth back, which brings us to the next
question. What is the best way to get missing teeth replaced? One can choose from
implants, bridges, partials or complete dentures. Today, I am going to focus on
implants. Simply put, an implant is a titanium prosthesis. Implants are placed in the
jawbone and they represent the roots of natural teeth. There is a middle piece that
connects the implant to the crown of the artificial tooth and is called an abutment.
Implants can also be used to hold dentures down -- especially when they don't fit --
which is a boon for patients who are missing teeth or have complete dentures. The
best advantage of having implants, compared to other options, is that they help
maintain bone; they maintain and prevent bone from melting away over time.
Bridges, complete dentures and partials do not maintain bone in anyway whatsoever.
I understand placing implants is a surgical procedure and this can scare patients,
pushing them away from getting this treatment done. At my practice I have found
that most of my patients are surprised at how well they heal and how little pain they
have after the surgery.
With the warm weather approaching I know that I've got
the itch to get that grill going full tilt again. Being a chef and
working long hours, I don't enjoy being cooped up in the house cooking meats such as steaks, pork chops or whole roasts the
for dinner. It just isn't my gig. I would sooner do all the best thing to remember is the correct room temperature for
cooking outside to enjoy the sun. your meats. Think of it like this, when doing any kind of
grilling season that is right around the corner for all of us. First
allows all the juices to stay in the meat when you cut into it.
of your chopping that you may need to prepare your feast.
Being ahead of the game is a good thing. Secondly, when
Here are a few recipe ideas to try outside on your grill:
Ingredients:
8 large sea scallops
1 mango
1 shallot
Small bunch of cilantro (wash well)
1 tsp ginger
1 lemon
1 lime
Salt and pepper
Olive oil
1 head of radicchio
Place your scallops on a plate with a paper towel under and over
them to make sure they are completely dry. With that done, start on you
relish. Peel, pit and dice your mango and place in a mixing bowl. Do the
same for the shallot and add in your juiced lemon and lime with chopped
cilantro and minced ginger. Add salt and pepper to taste as you mix it all
together. Finely julienne the head of radicchio and place it in water to
make sure you get all the dirt out and to keep that crunch we are looking
for.
Once your relish is completed, it's time to cook the scallops.
Preheat your grill to 450F. Season the dry scallops, dip in a small amount
of olive oil and place them on the grill. They should need approximately
4 minutes per side. Try not to move them around too much, as you don't
want to break them.
When your scallops are done let them “rest” just for a minute or so.
Take that time to place the sliced up radicchio in little clusters so that you
can place your scallops on top of them. Once you have your scallops on
their resting place, use a small spoon and place relish on top of your
scallops and enjoy.
Grilled Sea Scallops with Citrus Mango Relish
Serves 4
Fo o d C o u r t
Roasted Red Pepper and Chipotle marinated
Top Sirloin Steak
Serves 4
Ingredients:
4 10 oz top sirloin steak, (go to your local butcher for these,
for the size and quality)
1 grilled, skinned, and seeded red pepper
2 chipotle peppers
1 oz balsamic vinegar
1 clove of garlic
2 oz olive oil
1 large ziplock bag
Place all the ingredients in a food processor (not the meat and
bag, of course). Once all the ingredients are puréed smooth, add
them to the bag along with the beef. Mix and massage the marinade
over the meat to ensure it is all covered. This is best done in the
morning so that it can sit in the marinade for about 8 hours.
Preheat the grill to 425F. Place each steak on the grill moving
them about every 4 minutes a quarter turn, this will give the nice
hatch mark on the meat. When that beef is cooked to your desired
temperature, place it on a plate and “tent” it up. Rest the meat for
about 5 minutes then serve with whatever starch and vegetable you
may desire. I may suggest grilled mini red potatoes with garlic and
rosemary and maybe some grilled zucchini for the vegetable.
Keep in mind that if you can cook it on the stove there is no
reason why you can't cook it on the BBQ and stay outside for the
day. Of utmost importance with your meats, always remember
room temperature to start the cooking and rest and tent. This will
give you the best end result for you and your guest.
nacking can be a great way to monitor your eating habits, eat
Sless at meals, and spread nutrition throughout the day. Here
are some tips for eating healthier snacks, and maybe some
information about snacking you didn't know.
keep you full for a longer time and provide your body with lots
of usable energy. Things like chocolate, and chips will feel
satisfying, but will not keep you full for long because they are
made up of simple sugars and carbohydrates, which your body
consumes quickly, leaving you with no energy for later.
When you're snacking, portion size is particularly
important. You want to get a satisfying snack, without eating When choosing snacks beware of foods that are all
more than you meant to. This can be especially tricky with store natural. All natural does not mean low in calories, sugar, or salt.
bought snacks, which can contain two or three serving sizes in a
package. If you forget to take this into account when looking at
the calorie count, you can end up consuming many more
calories than you thought you were. Estimating a serving size
can be difficult, as many times the serving sizes are given in
grams or cups. This makes it quite difficult to figure out how
much of the package is in one serving. To help keep to the
approved serving sizes, separate out portions in to snack bags.
Make sure to read the label, and measure out each portion,
because guessing usually leads to consuming more. Keeping
Many natural foods contain sugars (fruit and fruit juices) that
you should consume in moderation. 'All natural' gives the
impression that it is very healthy, and leads people to consume
more than necessary. Also, things that are 'low fat' are not
necessarily lower in sugar, which may be added to make the
food taste good after the fat is removed, meaning it can have the
same amount of calories. People still associate 'low fat' with low
calories, leading to higher intake of those foods, and higher
caloric intake.
ith spring just around the corner, we all look at our homes
in a different light. We suddenly feel the urge to freshen up
certain areas. Any realtor will quickly tell you that kitchens
and bathrooms are the best areas to renovate when looking at resale
value, so it is no surprise that many people will be looking to make the
most of their kitchen renovation. However, for most, the hardest
question is where to start.
Here are a few tips to make the job a little less daunting.
First, decide on a budget. Can you afford to gut the whole space
and start all over? With this option, you have a clean slate to make
decisions. If the budget is more restrictive it is possible to change a few
surfaces and create a new look without breaking the bank. Once the
budget is determined, the choices can begin.
Cabinetry
Cabinetry is often one of the larger surfaces in the kitchen. They
are often the first thing that a person sees and utilizes. Take a good look
at the cabinets, especially by the knobs and handles. Do cabinets look
dated? Has the finish worn well? There are companies who can come in
and reface the door and door fronts without replacing the whole
cabinet. If you are replacing all the cabinetry, you need to consider the
following questions. What style are you looking for? Do you prefer a
traditional or contemporary look? Are you looking for a painted or
stained finish? Cabinetry is available at many different price points so it
is helpful to show the cabinetmakers what style you prefer and what
final look you are going for. Look through style magazines and books to
find something that suits your final design. Bringing them to the
cabinetmaker will help to narrow down your options more quickly.
Countertop
The countertop is another large surface area that can be replaced
to refresh the kitchen space. There are many options to choose from
today. These include laminate, quartz and the very popular granite.
Kitchen Creations:
Décor Tips for
Renewing Your Kitchen
Space
Karen Delazzari Cozy Creations
When choosing your counter surface, do some homework when it
comes to the care of each surface. Granite needs to be sealed in order to
preserve its finish. Laminate requires the use of a cutting board so that
it is not scratched. Figure out which surface will work best for you and
your family. When choosing the colour of your countertop, have your
cabinetry colour with you so you know that the colours and patterns
will work well together.
Flooring
Flooring is no longer limited to the laminate that our grandmother
had in her kitchen. There is a wide array of ceramics, laminates and
hardwoods available today. When choosing a floor, consider who will
be standing on it the most. Diabetics, for instance, find it difficult to
stand on ceramic for great lengths of time. Consider putting down mats
with foam under the pad for comfort if the surface is not forgiving on
the legs or feet. When choosing the floor, have your countertop and
cabinet samples with you. The most important decision is making sure
that the colour, scale and proportion of the countertop match that of
the floor. Patterns and colour should be complementary to each other.
Place the samples on top of each other when deciding on patterns to
see if they are fighting with each other.
Hardware
Hardware is a great way to update cabinetry when the cost of
replacement is out of the budget. A simple change such as finish (brass
to pewter for instance) can renew a space even with the existing cabinet
colour. Also, look at changing the faucets as well. Replacing a dripping
tap offers other savings down the road as well as updating your space.
There are options to consider when looking at finishes but remember
darker finishes sometimes require more consistent cleaning.
Paint
Paint is often your final decision when renovating any space. There
are literally thousands of colours to choose from, but you do not have
to feel overwhelmed by the options. Take all the surfaces that you have
chosen, such as countertop, cabinetry and flooring. Look for the
common denominator. Is there a colour family that seems to be
consistent? Do you want the room to have contrasting features or do
you want a more harmonious flow? Is a focal wall of colour or
wallpaper an option?
If these options still leave you scratching your head as to where to
start, there are professionals who can help make the decision-making
process much easier. They are trained to look for scale and proportion
as well as assisting in choosing just the right colour for the walls. They
can work with even the smallest budget and can offer assistance in
deciding just where to put those decorating dollars.
