garbage oriented, they care
about how the place looks,
said Barry Nordin of the
student executive.
The school has a garbage
man of the day whose duty is
to clean up the excessive litter
made inside and outside of the
school, said Debbie Cold well,
also on the executive.
"We try our best not to
litter, we do our part", Debbie
said.
Cariboo tries to be involved
in community activities such
as the dinner for old age
pensioners and the garbathon,
said Barry.

a letter of protest to the
provincial government about

They will also ask the town
councils to suggest the general
populace send letters of
protest.
Aid. Jim Girvin suggested
sending a wire of protest to
the government and Aid. Lon
Godfrey suggested asking all
other municipalities to do the
same.
"I can't understand why
everyone in the province isn't
concerned", said Mayor Ceal
Council still unsure on
condominium approval
Town council will decide,
after seeing letters showing
continuity of action, whether
or not they should apply

planned condominium in West
Quesenl.
Mr. O'Leary had received
approval for the condominium
Dec. 6. 1973 and re-approval
Feb. 11, 1974.
"You must assure council of
the reason for the delay, since
your tentative approval has
gone by", said Aid. Lon
Godfrey.
"The government changed
their plans substantially
shortly after I had been here
last December", said Mr.
O'Leary.
"I reapplied for government
approval Dec. 27", he said.
"Are you asking for council's
approval again?" said
Mayor Ceal Tingley.
"Yes, I didn't know if there
was a limit on the February
approval", Mr. O'Leary said.
"A principle is involved, do
we say because of tentative
approval given earlier and an
unfortunate delay we should
preclude him from the new
bylaw which is up for third
reading", said Aid. Godfrey.
"We need proof of continuity
of dates and efforts before
we can consider what is to be
done", he said.
"I am just applying for
re-approval of the original
approval okaying sub-division",
Mr. O'Leary said.
"We could re-approve the
application for sub-division
subject to council making a
decision based on a land use
contract and subdivision bylay",
said Aid. Godfrey.

see other places cleaned up,"

"Cariboo tries hard not to
litter, we do have people who
do, it's so hard to avoid", he

JOHNSTON SUBDIVISION DELEGATION

placing stop signs every two
blocks on Johnson Avenue
and placing truck route signs
on alternate routes rather
than through Johnston subdivision.
Council received two letters
'from residents of Johnston
subdivision asking why it had
defeated Aid. John Panagrot's
motion to deny access to
trucks over 24,000 pounds to
the subdivision.
From 10-12 residents of the
area were at the meeting to
talk to council about its
decision.
"It is difficult for me to
understand, why a council,
who by definition have the
best interests of the citizens
they represent at heart,
would make such a decision",
said a letter by G.A. Worobey
to council.
"It isn't logical to treat
different areas differently",
said Mayor Ceal Tingley.
"If we restricted traffic
through Johnston, people
from other areas would come
and say 'you did it for them
why not for us' ", said Mayor
Tingley.
• "We all agree we don't want
trucks in our areas more than
is necessary, but I don't think
it's that difficult to get
people's co-operation", he
said.
CONCERNED
"I'm concerned about the
letter indicating we don't give
a tinkers damn about children",
said Aid. Lon Godfrey.
There was a serious accident
on Kinchant Street and
we have taken remedial action
there, Aid. Godfrey said.
Major truck traffic has
lessened in the subdivision,
but it should not be restricted,
he said.
"In an emergency situation
what would happen if it was
illegal for trucks to go
through Johnston?", he asked.
"There is an alternative
route, I can't understand how
council can refuse permission
to restrict traffic", said Mr.
Worobey.
"It would be different if this

and last Sunday I counted six

Tourist association receives
per capita grant increase
The Cariboo Tourist Association
will receive a 15 cent
per capita increase on their
grant from town council.
The increase from 50 to 65
cents is the first in five years.

contents of a piggy back van
on a flat car in the B.C.
Railway yards, Dee. 4.
Damage is estimated at
$20,000 said Fire Captain Stan
Robertson.
Arson to cover up a theft is
suspected as cause of the fire,
Capt. Robertson said.
Van contents included return
items from stores such as
clothing, bedding and furniture
he said. ,
The fire was reported by a
passing motorist, an ex-fireman
at 1:20 a.m. .

way down to the yards when
the official call came in, said
Mr. Robertson.
It took about 40 minutes to
put the fire out and the call
was answered by 15 men.
They were recalled to the
fire about 11 a.m. Some
mattreses had started smoulering,
he said.

minutes to put out the fire,
said Mr. Robertson.

Dunrovin Park Society's care
home will be accepted until
the end of December said
W.J. Mclntyre, a director of
the society.
Name of the new administrator
should be known by the
middle of January, said Dr.
Mclntyre.
"The main thing is to get an
administrator, after that we
will look for other staff," he
said.
There are a few applications
in for other positions, he
added.
The society is constructing
an intermediate care home for
the elderly on Murphy Street.
It is expected to be finished
by January, but will not be
occupied until March.
"The increase will only add
$2,000 to the association's
budget", said Aid. Gloria
Lazzarin.
"If they had received the
grant from the regional district
the increase would have
been $5,000", said" Aid. Lazzarin..
"They are still receiving the
grant on the 1971 census!', she

''What if we estimated the
population has gone up by
1,000 and advanced them
$500", said Mayor Ceal Tingley.
"That puts them in a
peculiar position with the
other smaller communities
whose contributions would be
less", said Aid. Lazzarin.
"If the regional district
grant had gone through, we
would have been paying about
$1,000 more than this .increase",
she said.
Management has really
hussled for all the promotion
they can get for this area and
it's really benefited from it,
she added.

Dec. 2. District commissioner
Doreen Bennie enrolled the
new Brownies.
Mrs. Ann Yager was enrolled
into the Guiding movement.
New Brownies enrolled are;

High vitamin foods

Resistance in teeth is
caused by foods high in
vitamins A and C, calcium and
protein.
In order to get enough of
the proper foods in a day it
takes three balanced meals.
Skipping breakfast causes a
lack of the necessary nutrients
for lunch.
A skipped breakfast causes
hunger by 10 a.m. because of
low blood sugar, revivative of
blood glucose not related to
table sugar.
To counter the tired feeling
caused by low blood sugar,
people often snack on food
made from sugar and refined
grains, and this increases
the chance of dental disease.
Without a balanced breakfast,
a person is more likely to
be upset and nervous and
consequently snack more than
a calm person.
A breakfast high in table
sugar will also cause severe
depression and anxiety.
Before seeing a dentist
breakfast should not include:
donuts, rolls, pancakes, white
bread, sweetened fruit juice,
most dry cereals, jam and
syrup.
Good breakfasts include at
least one serving of each of
the.following: fresh fruit,
whole grain cereal, or bread,
meat or eggs and milk.

EASY IGNITING FABRICS
The major cause of all types
of fire and burn accidents in
Canada is carelessness, reported
the Canadian department
of consumer affairs.
Many of these accidents
involve children and easily
igniting fabrics.
When choosing clothing for
the young or elderly, special
attention should be paid to the
construction and fibre content.
Lighter-weight fabrics,
those with a raised surface,
such as flannelette, and open
weave fabrics burn faster.
Loose fitting garments with
flaring skirts or sleeves,
ruffles and trimmings ignite
more easily and burn faster
than close fitting plainly
styled garments.
Different fabrics have different
rates of igniting.
Cotton, rayon, linen, acetate
and triacetate will all

burn readily.
Nylon, polyester, acrylic,
spandex and polyproplene do
not ignite readily, but once
ignited tend to drip.
These hot drips tend to
carry the flames away from
the burning fabric so the
flames self-extinguishes.
Christmas tree safety h ints
Here are safety hints for
the Christmas holiday season:
1. Buy a fresh tree with
springy branches and tight
green needles.
2. Keep it indoors in water
or snow until ready to set up.
3. Saw off at least two
inches of the trunk, diagonal-
ly.'
4. Use a water reservoir
tree holder and keep it filled.
5. Keep the tree away from
drying and heat sources such
as radiators, registers and
fireplaces.
6. Use only approved lights
in good repair.
There is more than one
way to quit smokin ;
Here are a few tips which
may help you to quit smoking:
Most people find it best to
quit suddenly but even to
reduce smoking is of some
value. Others find it effective
to* set themselves a Q-Day-
Quitting Day - not more than
two weeks ahead and either
quit on that day or taper off to
zero.
Whenever possible, you
should avoid situations in
which you have been accustomed
to smoke, such as
drinking, playing cards,
watching TV, even being in
the company of other smokers.
This should only be
necessary during the withdrawal
period which varies in
length of time with each
smoker.

Cook's Corner
Here are two traditional
Christmas recipes; one English,
the other French.
HOT MULLED PUNCH
26 oz. rye
6 roasted apples
12 whole cloves
rind of one lemon, grated
12 broken bits of whole
cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar
Place all ingredients, but
apples, in a large pot and let
steep slowly over a simmering
flame, never coming to a boil.
Take off stove and add
apples. Serve hot.
TOURTIERE
1 lb. pork, minced
1 small onion, chopped
1 small garlic clove,
minced
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. celery salt
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 cup water

k cup breadcrumbs
pastry
Place all ingredients except
breadcrumbs in a saucepan.
Bring to a boil and cook
uncovered for 20 minutes over
medium heat. Remove from
heat and add a few spoonfulls
of breadcrumbs.
Let stand for ten minutes.
If the fat is sufficiently
absorbed by the breadcrumbs,
do not add more. If not,
continue in same manner.
Cool and pour into a
pastry-lined pan. Cover with
crust. Bake at 400 degrees F.
until golden brown. Serve
hot.

Worried about how to put
on chains?
A two-inch block of wood
can make installing chains a
lot easier, especially on s
snowy mountain path.
Lay out the chains on the
road and put the block
between the cross links.
Drive the rear wheel up on
the block. The wheel is not on
the chain and cannot bind it.
There will be enough room
in the wheel well to drape the
chain on the tire and hook the
catches easily.
7. Use only fire-proof
decorations if possible.
8. Do not place electrical
toys under tree, except wrapped
or in boxes.
9. Secure top of tree with
wire or fine string if there are
very young children or pets in
the home, to avoid tipping.
10. Consider using an
artifical flame proof tree.
11. Remove the tree to the
outdoors as soon as possible.
12. Never burn a Christmas
tree in the fireplace.
According to the National
Fire Protection Association, a
boric acid compound is of little
value when used on a Christmas
tree to make it flame
retardant.
The only sure method of
flame retarding trees is to
completely immerse them in
fire-retardant.
Modacrylic and saran will
not continue to burn once the
source of ignition is removed.
WOOL
Wool and silk do not easily
ignite and burn very slowly
once ignited.
Glass and asbestos do not
burn.
Children's sleepwear treated
with f lame-retardent finish
is available.
The life of such finishes is
limited, but can be extended
by the proper use of laundering
techniques.
Washed with carbonate based
detergents and a bleach
subsitute the finish will last 30
launderings.
The bleach substitute will
also maintain fabric color and
strength.

...bazaar allowed patients at the unit to engage in a bit of Christmas shopping.
"Why did you bother to get married if you are not
going to take your husband's name?"
I can't begin to count the number of times I have been
asked that question.
Why? Because I love my husband and am willing to
commit myself to a long term relationship with him.
Why not take my husband s name? Because I am sure
enough of myself as an individual.
I am not so insecure that I have to hide behind my
husband's name and the title "Mrs." to prove my worth to
myself or to anyone else.
Women are raised to consider marriage as their main
goal in life.
Without marriage all accomplishments, as a doctor,
lawyer, writer, painter, skater or swimmer, are
considered second best-compensations for not being
married.
With marriage, all other accomplishments are deemed
unnecessary.
TOLERATED
Working women are'tolerated as long as their job
does not interfere with their primal role of a wife.
Men are raised to consider marriage secondary, a
career is their most important goal.
If a young boy answered the question "what do you
want to be when you grow up?" by saying "I just want to
be married and stay at home" most people would consider
something was seriously wrong with him.
If a girl answered the question in the same manner s he
would in most cases win smiles of approval from her
elders for conforming to the expected role.
Instant recognition that a woman has reached her goal
is through the title Mrs. so-and-so.
Once she has achieved that title, no input by her into
society is necessary, except in her role of wife and the
subsequent role of mother.
When a married woman rejects the title Mrs. and
retains her own name, she is seen as rejecting her primal
goal by saying "I am sure enough of myself that I am
willing to compete in the workworld, not as a stopgap
until marriage, but as a lifelong career."
That some women are willing to take on the dual role of
wife and mother in the same manner as a man takes on
the roles of husband and father, threatens the idea
women need only be concerned with marriage.
DUAL ROLES
The number of women who are willing to take on the
dual roles is small and likely to remain so for some time.
Until society changes its values and a woman, no
matter what accomplishments she has made in business,
arts or sports, is considered unfulfilled unless she is
married, most women will continue taking their husbands
name and using the title "Mrs."

Men's formal footwear seems
to have abandoned the tie
shoe in favour of the slip-on,
the front upper out in a single
piece somewhat high on the
instep with simple metal
adornments or braided leather
strapping.
Patent and combinations of
patent and suede are popular
as well as the classic polished
calf.
Leather can practically care
for itself. Chemically treated
finishes infused into the skins
make the surface washable.
Spots, stains and surface
soil can be washed off with a
simple home-cleaning method
such as wiping with a damp
cloth wrung out in mild soap
and water solution and drying
with a soft cloth.
Suedes need to be brushed
regularly with a soft rubber
sponge or bristle brush -never
with a wire brush.

holds planning meeting
The Quesnel winter frolics
committee held its third meeting,
Nov. 5.
A letter was received from
Duncan Myers of the Cariboo
Tourist Association stating
more information about Winter
Frolics could be included
in the Quesnel and District
tourist brochure.
Reports were received from
various committees about
specified projects planned by
their organizations.
Activities planned include a
skydiving show, Miss Quesnel
pageant and ball, native dancers
and a car rally.

or stop. On upgrades, use a
little extra speed at the
bottom of the hill for extra
momentum. If the wheels
spin, release accelerator slowly.
When at the crest of a hill,
reduce speed to a minimum
before starting down.
- Slow down on icy surfaces
before reaching curves to
assure safe steering. When
entering a curve, turn the
steering wheel gradually and
no further than necessary.
- Be especially alert when
the temperature rises to 32
degrees. A treacherous, invisible
slick sheet of ice may
form, and the stopping distance
on ice at this temperature
is twice as great as at
zero. Also, don't ignore the
danger of ice if streets are
clear. Look ahead for icy
patches in shaded areas such
as beneath overpasses or on
bridges.
In short, "winterize" your
driving as well as your car.

The two public meetings
'held last Sunday at The
Alexandria Hall and at the
Oasis at McLeese Lake as
regards T.V., were fairly well
attended with about 43 people
attending the Alexandria one
and 50 attending the McLeese
Lake one.
So far we have close to
$5,000 paid into the association
or pledged for next
month. This amount is about
one third of the total needed
to put the repeater station in.
All you people who haven't
returned your questionnaires
yet, please do so as soon as
possible.
Let's all get behind this and
have decent T.V. to watch
next year. In most cases the
engineers are guaranteeing us
better T.V. reception than
they get in Quesnel, as our
equipment will be more modern.

at last Tuesday's meeting.

burned to the ground in a

on sale at the school daily now
with Mrs. Simmons in charge.
The Pine Cones Club Christmas

well thanks to the efforts of
the pupils of Pine Crest school

An Ontario-based computer
expert has found a way
to handle the steady rise in his
take-home salary. He passes it
along to the Unitarian Service
Committee. He and his family
like to live simply; they spend
many hours in volunteer work
for the agency. For them a
raise in pay means they can
afford another contribution.

Bouchie
Lake
On November 28, Russ
Jones chaired a meeting for
Bouchie Lake residents and
other fringe areas to discuss
the Quesnel area study.
Although various ways can
be used to do this, such as
annexing or boundary extension
amalgamation, everyone
agreed that Bouchie Lake
would prefer to be left as it is.
No benefits would be forthcoming
by any such move,
instead, taxes would invariably
go up.
Special mention was made
of the fact that if these areas
are taken into the city,
townspeople can expect a
substantial raise in taxes.
There is no one specific area
that has a tax base and would
support any major services.
Everyone would have to
contribute towards this expense.
It is hoped, that at the
next meeting the engineers
who drew up the proposed
map can exclude Bouchie
Lake from this plan.
The community is urged to
attend the next meeting Dec.
11 at 8:00 p.m. in the Bouchie
Lake Hall.
A good attendance at this
month's recreation commission
meeting.

Ticket sales on the

A House warming was held
at the home of Ken and Molly.
Steele, with about 30 people
attending.
Everyone had a good visit
and dance with their friends
and neighbors.
A delicious buffet supper
was served, and everyone
enjoyed it immensely.
The Steeles were presented
with a beautiful pole lamp.
People in the area will be
pleased to hear that Steve
Cochran has taken the big
step, right, he's gone and
gotten married.
Sorry to hear Mabel Magnuson
was ill in the hospital,
glad you are feeling better
now.
Some of the fellas in our
area are now working at
Prince George l but guess they
can be thankful they still have
jobs, what with so many out of
work.
Our roads out here are sure
a sheet of ice, they put some
sand on it, but we could use
some more sand on it still.
The kids that go to the 4-H
club learned how to make calf
rope halters this month.
Now they can put them on
their calves and get their
calves working and used to
them.
The Junior Forest Wardens
and Guards are busy on their
winter project, they are building
end tables, and shelf
towel racks, one of the many
projects they do as a club.
I sure would appreciate
some news, for lack of it, we
only have a column twice a
month.
Boys from our area playing
hockey in town this year are
Eric Demers, Carl Demers,
Hans Brinkert, Richard Schofield,
Steve Standbridge.
Two girls from our area
were in the ice carnival this
year. They were Debbie Brinkert
and Barb Schofield.
The kids in our area very
much appreciate having the
use of the ice rink at the
Schofields.

it snows.

LOCAL C.W.L FOSTER CHILD
Sonia is no ordinary girl.
At seven years of age, she
is an exceptionally good stu.dent.
Last spring she placed first
in her standard III exams and
before that, she stood first in
standard II.
She lives,on merely $84 a
year, seven dollars a month.
Although Sonia never knew
her natural parents, she
seems to be well taken care of
by Mother Teresa.
Mother Teresa is an Italian
nun who runs St. Vincent's
Home for foundling and orphans
in Agra, India.
But Sonia has somebody
else who takes care that she is
fed, clothed and educated
properly.
Ever since she was a baby,
she has been supported by a
group of women, two oceans
and thousands of miles away.
Sonia is the foster daughter
of St. Anne's Catholic Wo­
men's League in Quesnel, who
send $15 a month to Mother
Teresa's orphanage.
The home in Agra is mainly
supported by Canadians and
receives only $125 per year
from the Indian government.
Because of the insecurity of
money orders sent by mail,
funds are sent through a
special arrangement with
Monsignor Miles in Kamloops.

Evangelical Church annual
banquet in Prince George.
Before a full house he spoke
on "being ready to explain to
people about the principles of
the Christian faith."

her husband in Australia,
went on a trip to India.
She spent some time' in
Agra and visited St. Vincent's
Home to see her mother's
foster child Antonia and to see
Mother Teresa.
Here is that letter:
Dear Mummy;
. Just had to write you
right away, at present we are
sitting in gas station waiting
for the car to get its oil
changed.
We spent all afternoon with
Mother Teresa at St. Vincent's
Home and saw lots of
Antonia and all the other
children. Haven't seen anything
else yet, not even the
Taj Mahal, but we'll do that
tonight by moonlight and
tomorrow at sunrise.
Mother Theresa is a fantastic
little round Italian woman,
full of boundless energy and
love for her children. I've
never heard of her, but that
probably means there is a
large hole in my education.I'm
sure she must be quite
famous.
St. Vincent's must be the
cleanest, nicest place, anywhere
in India. You could eat
off the floors. It's all cheerfully
painted and modern and a real
oasis in the middle of a very
large ugly desert.
Mother Theresa's orphans
must be better off than 99 per
cent of Indian children with
parents. I don't know how she
manages because she gets
only $125 a year total from the
Indian Government. The rest
of her money comes from
Canadians.
You can be sure your
money is very well spent, I
can't think of a better cause.
Some of the children are
unwanted offspring of rape
victims of the 1971 war with
Pakistan (Bengladesh).
Such sad little waifs, Bill
and I hope to "adopt" one or
two when we get back home. I
think there are about 85 kids
there and about 65 have
"parents" like you.
Mother Theresa is very
Italian and has lived here for
24 years. She speaks fluent
Hindi (Indian language) and
somewhat broken English, so

many persons today ask: is
this life all there is?
The answer to this question
will be dealt with in a series of
four discourses, sponsored by
the local congregation of
Jehovah's Witnesses.
The first talk in the series
was held Dec. 8 and Mr. M.
Maier, an elder in the south
unit, dealt with the subject:
"Mankind - created to live, not
to die".
It was explained, for example,
how old age and death
came about, and how unnatural
death really is. Yes, it
was God's purpose for mankind
to live, not to die.

communication was, at times,
garbled!
Anyway we all got along
famously and she plied us
with tea and cashew nuts and
gave us presents of photographs
and a bag for me.
Beneath her soft, capable
exterior we suspect lies a
mind of steel and ice. She is
probably quite adept at getting
what she wants out of
people in her own way and she
probably is a very shrewd
businesswoman.
She sees us as a window on
the world and at present is
very concerned with getting
one of her girls to Canada or
the U.S. She has an M.A.
and is evidently quite bright.
I think Mother Theresa
intedns us to help her, although
she has said nothing
directly. Anyway we go back
tomorrow to meet the girl -
Carmella. (Many of the kids
have Italian names.)
Antonia is a cute little girl -
so clean and well dressed, as
are they all. It's a bit hard to
say much about her as she's
very shy and speaks little
English, although evidently
understands it fairly well.
It's too early to say whether
she's bright enough for university,
but if she has the
brains she'll get the training
she wants, nursing or whatever.
If they're not very
bright, Mother Theresa arranges
their marriages, even!
We gave them a whole lot of
toothpaste and soap and T.P.,
we brought far too much from
Australia for our own use,
possibly due to divine influence?
The only other thing we
could think of to give was a
can of smoked oysters that
Florence sent us for Christmas.
All contributions were
gratefully received.
Mother Theresa said that
her Canadian contact is a
priest, Monsignor Somebody
(I couldn't understand her
very well). She says that she
gets all the dollars all right
(guess there are ways of
getting around the corrupt
post office.)
Anyway cajole all your
friends to contribute lots and
lots of money, it will be put to
very'good use.
We head for Delhi tomorrow
afternoon and expect to
leave India on the 19th (the

India-Pakistan border is only
open for traffic two days a
week).
Our long dreary time in
India has certainly been brightened
by the orphanage,
which is sort of a paradox!
By the way, a bomb came
through the roof in the war of
1971, but no one was hurt.
Mother Theresa showed it to
us proudly.
Agra was quite heavily
bombed and the Taj Mahal
was shrouded in black and
wasn't hit, luckily. We had no
idea.
Time to go. Hope you get
this alright. I mailed another
one yesterday in Lucknow.
We are both well, but hot and
tired. Bill sends love.
