Work in the Vicinity <strong>of</strong> Electrical Apparatus• isolating and earthing <strong>electrical</strong> apparatus;• positioning the mobile plant such that the safeapproach distance can be maintained in allcircumstances;• the use <strong>of</strong> <strong>safety</strong> observers and barriers andsigns;• the use <strong>of</strong> other precautions such as physicalrestrictions or control devices in conjunctionwith barriers;• the suppression <strong>of</strong> Auto-Reclose;• the alteration <strong>of</strong> protection and controlsettings; and• de-energising the <strong>electrical</strong> apparatus.Mobile plant, and where appropriate, vehicles, shallbe fitted with a trailing earthing conductor to protectagainst the hazards presented by inducedvoltages.When mobile plant may come near (refer section 6)live <strong>electrical</strong> apparatus, the mobile plant shall beearthed. Work in the Vicinity <strong>of</strong> Electrical Apparatusmobile plant, precautions shall be taken to protectthe operator from hazardous step and touchpotentials. No person other than the mobile plantoperator shall touch the mobile plant whilst inoperation.Where mobile plant e.g. EWP is only partiallyinsulated, the following permanent sign shall befixed at each operator’s station:DANGER – BEWARE OF POWER LINESThis appliance is not fully insulated. Do notpermit any uninsulated part <strong>of</strong> this appliance tobe in close proximity to live conductors.Insulated mobile plant shall be tested at specificintervals as per organisational procedures andmarked to show the date <strong>of</strong> the next routine test.5.5 WORK BY ORDINARY PERSONSWhere ordinary persons are required to <strong>work</strong> in thevicinity <strong>of</strong> <strong>electrical</strong> apparatus, the ordinary personper<strong>for</strong>ming the <strong>work</strong>, the person in charge <strong>of</strong> the<strong>work</strong> and the person in charge <strong>of</strong> the <strong>electrical</strong>apparatus shall all cooperate to ensure that the<strong>work</strong> is per<strong>for</strong>med safely, and that specificprecautions are taken.Blue Book – December 2005 Page 47 <strong>of</strong> 148
