When she agreed to serve as interim principal for the 2010-11 school year, Mary Hesser fully intended to return to her dearly-loved position as director of guidance. “At Lorcan’s request, I agreed to serve as interim principal for the year to allow the school to conduct a thorough search,” says Hesser. “I really didn’t intend to apply, but, wanted to serve in whatever capacity was needed. Gradually, though, I realized that I was really enjoying this. I felt like I had the skills and ability to be successful and the sincere desire to help make CB the best that it can be.” In the fall, the school formed a Principal Search Committee, comprised of faculty members, school administrators, past and present CB parents, a representative from the Diocese of Sacramento and a member of the Board of Trustees. The committee then launched a comprehensive search, reviewed applications, screened a number of highly qualified candidates and finally recommended that CB President, Lorcan Barnes, meet with three finalists. “It was gratifying to see the number of people wanting to be here and be part of our community,” says Barnes. “I conducted extensive interviews with three talented, dedicated Catholic educators. Ultimately, it was clear that Mary Hesser truly represented the best of the best. Her personal character, professional experience and resolute dedication to our Catholic, Lasallian community were unmatched.” Hesser brings considerable education, experience and talent to the position. She has served the community for the past 13 years as a classroom teacher and guidance counselor. Prior to that, she worked as a classroom teacher for 18 years at both the high school and primary grade levels. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history, a master’s degree in educational counseling and holds a pupil personnel school counseling credential. She was honored as CB’s Lasallian Educator of the Year in 2008 and as the Distinguished Lasallian 5 Educator in 2009 for the entire District of San Francisco (500-plus teachers in 11 schools). She is a graduate of the San Francisco District’s Lasallian Leadership Institute (a three-year leadership program) and the Buttimer Institute (a three-year program studying the life and work of St. John Baptist de La Salle). In November, she spent three weeks in Rome attending an International gathering of Lasallian educators to discuss the future of the Brothers’ International Institute (see page 8). “I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the Lasallian Leadership Institute and the Buttimer Institute,” says Hesser. “Until I took on this position, I did not realize how well prepared I was for the challenge of leading a Lasallian school. The Christian Brothers have really been revolutionary in sharing their mission and vision with Lay Partners. Each day, I benefit from their wisdom and guidance.” Now that she has accepted the job of principal for the long-term, Hesser is looking forward to building on CB’s 135-year tradition of excellent Catholic, Lasallian education. She is also one-half of the District of San Francisco’s first husband and wife principal team as husband, Noel, serves as Justin-Siena High School’s (Napa) principal. Their son, Alex ’99, is a history teacher at Justin- Siena, as well. Daughters Abigail ’02 and Anastasia ’06 are also CB graduates. “I feel so honored and blessed to work with our amazing faculty, staff, students and families. I will certainly miss the day-to-day contact with the students, but, I really believe now that I will better serve them by serving our phenomenal teachers and supporting their efforts to be at their best for the young men and women of CB.”
