CB Saving Lives One Pint at a Time
CB students, faculty and staff
rolled up their sleeves to save lives and
celebrate student Tim Pfeifer’s recent
double lung transplant with a blood
drive and fundraiser on November 29,
2010. Organized by Darci Stark, CB
athletic trainer and physical education
teacher, and student athletic trainers, the
group’s efforts resulted in a record 202
pints of blood and $300 for the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation (CFF).
“This year, we celebrated Tim’s
transplant in September and pray for
him as he continues with his recovery,”
says Stark. “We knew we wanted to
hold this drive in Tim’s honor and give
Participate in Environmental
Water Project
CB’s Christian Service-Learning
program takes lessons learned in the
classroom and applies them through
meaningful service projects that help the
community. For Dave Nelson’s honors
chemistry, this meant some after-school
time on the river this past November.
Students ventured out on Nelson’s
boat to collect water samples on the
American and Sacramento Rivers. The
samples, collected from areas only
accessible by boat, were then analyzed
back in the laboratory. The results
were then shared with the California
Department of Water Resources and
the California Regional Environmental
Education Community. The project will
be repeated in the spring so the students
people who might not be able to donate
blood a chance to help by supporting
the CFF. The fact that we broke our
school blood drive record and collected
$300 shows how much Tim is loved
throughout our school community.”
“I’m very grateful that so many
people came out to donate blood and
support cystic fibrosis research,” says
Pfeifer.
“We are grateful to Ms. Stark,
the student athletic trainers and the
CB community for hosting such
successful, lifesaving blood drives,” says
BloodSource Chief Operating Officer,
Dirk Johnson. “For the past two years,
can compare
and track the
differences, if
any, in the water
quality between
the seasons.
“This was
a great lesson
for our studentscientists
because it
shows that there
is always an
opportunity to
be of service
to others,” says Nelson. “By helping
provide data, we hope to help, in our
own small way, to protect the rivers that
12
the school has earned our Largest
Single-Day Blood Drive High School
Award and the timing this year could
not have been better as it really helped
us replenish our supplies following
the high-usage Thanksgiving holiday
weekend.”
Because each pint of blood can
be separated into various components
and transfused to three patients, the
Tim Pfeifer blood drive may have saved
or improved the lives of 606 patients
throughout Northern California.
Rainfall did not dampen the spirits of the honors chemistry students in
pursuit of water samples on the American and Sacramento Rivers. Front
are so essential to life, agriculture and
prosperity in the Sacramento region and
beyond.”
