Message From the President
Dear Alumni, Family and Friends:
“You must not doubt that it is a great gift of God, this grace He has given you to be entrusted with
the instruction of children, to announce the Gospel to them and to bring them up in the spirit of
religion.” St. John Baptist de La Salle
Though these words were directed to the Christian Brothers in the writings of the Founder, they are
inscribed indelibly in the hearts of the thousands of lay educators worldwide who join them in carrying on the
mission of Catholic, Lasallian education.
In November, we learned that our Brothers’ residential community will be closing (see page 6). While
we will miss the Brothers’ daily presence on campus, we remain resolutely committed to ensuring that future
generations experience the same quality Catholic, Lasallian education that has been the core of our mission in
Sacramento. Because there is no change in ownership or governance of the school, day-to-day operations on
campus will remain the same.
Thanks to the hard work of our admissions team and our faculty and staff who make this such a
wonderful place to learn and prepare for college, the future looks bright for Christian Brothers High School
and the Class of 2015. In January, we hosted the high school placement exam and welcomed an impressive
group of prospective students. We exceeded the average number of test takers over the last few years. CB is no
longer the best kept secret in town!
As we move forward, our goal is to secure sufficient tuition assistance to allow us to welcome all qualified
students. It is heartbreaking to turn away students with the potential for success and desire to be here, when
we cannot meet their family’s needs with the tuition assistance we have available. We need our alumni, families,
and friends to give generously to support these deserving young men and women.
For our current families, we continue to work hard to control costs and ensure that Catholic, Lasallian
education remains affordable. In 2010, we froze tuition for the 2010-11 school year at the previous year’s rate.
For 2011-12, the Board of Trustees recently approved a modest increase of
1 percent. I am grateful to our faculty and staff for their unrelenting efforts to
economize without sacrificing the quality education our students deserve.
As we look to the future of Christian Brothers High School, I am
convinced that this Catholic, Christian community, inspired by St. John Baptist
de La Salle, will continue to thrive. I believe I speak for all of us when I say
that we are incredibly proud to be entrusted with carrying on the Lasallian
educational mission in Sacramento and are grateful for all that the Brothers
have done for us over the past 135 years.
Live Jesus in our hearts!
When she agreed to serve as interim principal
for the 2010-11 school year, Mary Hesser fully
intended to return to her dearly-loved position as
director of guidance.
“At Lorcan’s request, I agreed to serve as
interim principal for the year to allow the school
to conduct a thorough search,” says Hesser. “I
really didn’t intend to apply, but, wanted to serve in
whatever capacity was needed. Gradually, though,
I realized that I was really enjoying this. I felt like
I had the skills and ability to be successful and the
sincere desire to help make CB the best that it can
be.”
In the fall, the school formed a Principal
Search Committee, comprised of faculty members,
school administrators, past and present CB parents,
a representative from the Diocese of Sacramento
and a member of the Board of Trustees. The
committee then launched a comprehensive search,
reviewed applications, screened a number of highly
qualified candidates and finally recommended that
CB President, Lorcan Barnes, meet with three
finalists.
“It was gratifying to see the number of people
wanting to be here and be part of our community,”
says Barnes. “I conducted extensive interviews
with three talented, dedicated Catholic educators.
Ultimately, it was clear that Mary Hesser truly
represented the best of the best. Her personal
character, professional experience and resolute
dedication to our Catholic, Lasallian community
were unmatched.”
Hesser brings considerable education,
experience and talent to the position. She has
served the community for the past 13 years as a
classroom teacher and guidance counselor. Prior
to that, she worked as a classroom teacher for 18
years at both the high school and primary grade
levels. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history, a
master’s degree in educational counseling and holds
a pupil personnel school counseling credential.
She was honored as CB’s Lasallian Educator of
the Year in 2008 and as the Distinguished Lasallian
5
Educator in 2009 for
the entire District
of San Francisco
(500-plus teachers in
11 schools). She is a
graduate of the San
Francisco District’s
Lasallian Leadership
Institute (a three-year
leadership program)
and the Buttimer
Institute (a three-year
program studying the
life and work of St.
John Baptist de La
Salle). In November,
she spent three weeks in Rome attending an International
gathering of Lasallian educators to discuss the future of
the Brothers’ International Institute (see page 8).
“I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to
participate in the Lasallian Leadership Institute and the
Buttimer Institute,” says Hesser. “Until I took on this
position, I did not realize how well prepared I was for
the challenge of leading a Lasallian school. The Christian
Brothers have really been revolutionary in sharing their
mission and vision with Lay Partners. Each day, I benefit
from their wisdom and guidance.”
Now that she has accepted the job of principal for
the long-term, Hesser is looking forward to building on
CB’s 135-year tradition of excellent Catholic, Lasallian
education. She is also one-half of the District of San
Francisco’s first husband and wife principal team as
husband, Noel, serves as Justin-Siena High School’s (Napa)
principal. Their son, Alex ’99, is a history teacher at Justin-
Siena, as well. Daughters Abigail ’02 and Anastasia ’06 are
also CB graduates.
“I feel so honored and blessed to work with our
amazing faculty, staff, students and families. I will certainly
miss the day-to-day contact with the students, but, I really
believe now that I will better serve them by serving our
phenomenal teachers and supporting their efforts to be at
their best for the young men and women of CB.”

Christian Brothers Residential Community
to Depart Sacramento
Br. Stanislaus Campbell, FSC,
Brother Visitor of the De La Salle
Christian Brothers District of San
Francisco announced in November
that a number of Christian Brothers’
living communities will be consolidated
in the summer of 2011. This change,
part of a long process of turning over
school leadership to Lay Partners, allows
for larger living communities for the
Brothers which is a vital component
of their vocation. The community in
Sacramento is scheduled to be closed
with Br. Christopher Donnelly, FSC,
and Br. Thomas Pham, FSC, joining
other communities in the Western
United States. Br. Donald Johanson,
FSC, has been appointed Brother
Visitor of the District of San Francisco
and will live and work at the District
headquarters in Napa.
While this change is reflective
of the decline in religious vocations
nationwide, CB in Sacramento is blessed
to enjoy close proximity to the District
of San Francisco headquarters in Napa
and as such, anticipates maintaining
a close working relationship with the
Christian Brothers. Dedicated educators
and staff are prepared to carry on
the Catholic, Lasallian tradition of
education at Christian Brothers High
School.
“On the part of the Brothers, this
is truly a vote of confidence,” says Br.
Donald. “We have confidence in the
administration, faculty and staff, and
know that the school is in good hands.”
“The vocation of the Christian
Brothers is teaching. As such, they
have been extraordinary teachers
in sharing their mission, vision and
values,” says CB President, Lorcan
Barnes. “Throughout my career, I have
been blessed to work with a number
of religious orders. None have been as
intentional or as forward-thinking about
sharing their charism and mission. Their
willingness to so generously impart
the Founder’s mission allows Lasallian
education to thrive worldwide. ”
With considerable foresight, the
District of San Francisco has invested
extensive human and financial resources
over the last 16 years to provide
Lasallian formation opportunities to
trustees, faculty and staff. Sacramento’s
6
campus community includes a number
of Lasallian Leadership Institute and
Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies
graduates who have benefitted from
these multi-year formation programs.
Other faculty members and staff have
participated in Lasallian immersion
activities nationally and abroad.
Other schools in the district have
been without Brothers communities for
decades while successfully advancing
the Lasallian mission.
“We have full faith that Christian
Brothers High School in Sacramento
will continue to thrive as part of our
Lasallian community,” says Br. Donald.
“At CB, day-to-day operations
will remain the same,” says President
Lorcan Barnes. “CB is still owned
by the Christian Brothers District
of San Francisco and the school is
wholeheartedly committed to our
Catholic, Lasallian mission. We are
financially secure. Our faculty and staff
are well prepared and proud to carry
on the school’s 135-year tradition of
excellence in education while inspiring
the hearts and minds of our students.”

Br. Donald
Johanson, FSC
to Lead District
of San Francisco
Brother Donald Johanson, FSC, has
been appointed Visitor of the District
of San Francisco, effective July 1, 2011,
for a four-year term. As Brother Visitor,
Br. Donald will direct the community
life of the Brothers while leading
the schools and educational efforts
from Tucson, Arizona to Yakima,
Washington. The appointment, made by
Brother Álvaro Rodriguez Echeverria,
FSC, Superior General of the De La
Salle Christian Brothers International
Institute in Rome, followed a districtwide
nominating process and vote by
the Brothers.
Br. Donald joined the Christian
Brothers in 1975 following a five-year
stint as a pilot in U.S. Air Force. A
graduate of Sacred Heart High School
in San Francisco, San Francisco State
University and the University of
San Francisco, Br. Donald found his
vocation in teaching and decided to
become a Brother, in large part thanks
to his admiration for his high school
teachers.
Throughout the years, Br. Donald
has taught at Sacred Heart and De La
Salle High School in Concord. He
then became the District’s vocation
director, which was followed by an
eight-year appointment in Rome where
he developed the Brothers’ international
web site, worked as curator of the
Christian Brothers Museum, was the
Director of Technology, and coadministrator
of the Casa Generalizia.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Br.
Donald wears a number of hats at CB
including Director of the Brothers’
community, webmaster, assistant
principal, and accounting teacher. His
love for the students shows in his
masterful photography with portraits
displayed throughout the campus and
on the web site.
As for his thoughts on this new
appointment, Br. Donald is humbled
and a bit apprehensive.
“I hope I can fulfill the expectations
of the Brothers,” says Br. Donald. “It
will be a challenge. But, we work as a
team to do what we collectively ask one
another to do. It is in that spirit that I
accept this new opportunity to be of
service.”
“Br. Donald is incredibly dedicated,
a stalwart leader, and an unfailingly
kind person,” says Lorcan Barnes,
president. “The District of San
Francisco is blessed to have someone
like him to take on this vital leadership
role. I am absolutely certain that he
will be successful and we look forward
to working with him throughout the
course of his appointment.”
Principal Hesser Attends
International Lasallian
Meeting in Rome
Every year, Lasallian educators
from across the globe gather at
the De La Salle Motherhouse in
Rome for the Centro Internacional
Lasalliano – a five-week program
of sharing information, exploring
challenges, planning for the future,
and prayer.
In November, CB Principal,
Mary Hesser, was one of four
representatives from the District
of San Francisco and 17 from
North America invited to attend
the initial three-week portion of
the 2010 gathering. Collectively,
the meeting hosted 77 Lasallians
from five continents. The group
was comprised of 35 Brothers, 41
Lay Partners and one Guadalupana
Sister. With 36 Spanish-speaking,
35 English-speaking, and 6 Frenchspeaking
participants, headphones
and translators were always on hand
to facilitate communication. The
group met all together for lectures
and to address global topics. Smaller
discussions were held among the
language groups.
As the group explored the
theme, “Understanding & Living
Lasallian Association Today
– Tradition, Transition and
Transformation” it quickly became
clear that with vastly different
cultures and histories come
unique manifestations of Lasallian
association. Although the underlying
commitment to the ideals of St.
John Baptist de La Salle remains the
same, being present in the world
as Lasallians will look different in
Myanmar than in Spain or Africa or
North America.
One fact is certain though, and
that is that as religious vocations
decline, advancing the tradition,
ideals, and blessings of Lasallian
education will increasingly transition
to Lay Partners.
“As an order of the Catholic
Church, the Christian Brothers are
light-years ahead. We explored what
the order will look like in the future
and what it will mean to be Lasallian.
We all learned from each other. The
8
Brothers fully understand the reality
of declining religious vocations, and
they are giving us everything that we
need to succeed,” says Hesser.
While Hesser was in Rome,
Br. Stanislaus Campbell, FSC,
announced the pending closure of
the Brothers’ residential community
in Sacramento. The timing, Hesser
says, was Divine.
“It felt very providential to
be in Rome at that time,” says
Hesser. “I left this meeting feeling
incredibly empowered, excited and
fully committed to carrying on the
Lasallian educational mission in our
school. We are now the guarantors
of this incredible tradition and I
look forward to working with our
faculty and staff to share this fully
with our students.”

Frigid morning temperatures
and dense fog did not deter Danny
Delgado’s watershed biology class from
its quest to gather data at the American
River. Student scientists collected water
and soil samples, checked temperatures
and assessed habitats as they worked
to compile and complete a field
assessment and analysis.
The class, which is new to
Christian Brothers this year, focuses
on Sacramento’s unique location at
the confluence of the American and
Sacramento Rivers and introduces
students to the myriad issues affecting
the Sacramento Valley watershed.
They look at biological and chemical
processes while also examining issues
of watershed management, water
management, wetlands management
and wastewater treatment.
“In years past, we taught marine
biology,” explains science teacher,
Danny Delgado ’79. “The students
enjoyed the class, but, it really
wasn’t relevant in terms of concept
application given our location and
limited ability to engage in handson
learning. We have a vibrant,
living watershed that is rich with
learning opportunities and possible
career opportunities as well.”
“I live on the Delta, so this class is
really meaningful to me,” says Mikaela
Stirling ’11. “Water is definitely a limited
resource and we don’t always appreciate
that. Learning more about the issues has
been great. I also love that the class is
hands-on and we do labs almost every
day.”
“CB’s teachers continuously look
for innovative ways to enhance learning
opportunities and make the curriculum
relevant to our students,” says Principal
Mary Hesser. “Danny Delgado really
took this idea and ran with it. He did all
of the research, developed the course
curriculum, and submitted a proposal
for UC course approval. The approval
came back almost immediately and he
set about launching the Sacramento
area’s first high school watershed
biology course.”
9
Gabriel Trujillo ’11, who hopes to
one day study medicine, says the class
has brought him a new appreciation
for our local watershed. “I never really
stopped to think about the rivers before
now,”says Trujillo. “Now, I think about
how much water we all use. We really
take for granted that it will always be
available.”
“At the end of the course, I hope
students have a deeper understanding
of our area watershed and of what
a treasure it is to Sacramento and
beyond,” says Delgado. “I want them
to see and get excited about college
and career opportunities in the science
of watershed management, water
management, and even civil
engineering. And, I want them
to understand potential
dangers to the watershed
and examine possible
solutions.”

Each day as school ends, as many
as 17 students report to the athletic
training room at Christian Brothers
High School. They are not there
to have ankles taped or rehabilitate
injuries; they are there to learn to tape
ankles and assist athletes needing care
before practice and during games.
Darci Stark, ATC, the school’s certified
athletic trainer and physical education
teacher facilitates an after-school
athletic training program that includes
lessons in anatomy, exercise physiology,
biomechanics, injury prevention and
recognition as well as the importance of
proper hydration and nutrition.
“This program is a great way to
introduce our students to the world of
athletic training and in a small degree,
sports medicine,” says Stark. “As an
athletic trainer, I work hard to ensure
the health and well-being of our student
athletes. The student trainers take it
seriously and come in here to learn.
They are a tremendous help before and
during games and they really are extra
pairs of eyes for me in keeping track
of our student athletes in the various
sports.”
The program, which is open to
all CB students, requires participants
to commit to three hours each week
in the athletic training room for every
week during the fall, winter or spring
seasons. Before hitting the field or the
court, student athletic trainers must
master a number of skills and complete
a detailed level-one checksheet created
by Stark. After working as a student
athletic trainer for one year, students
can enroll in an independent study
course which includes extensive book
work, reading, and a number of labs.
One former participant, Stephanie
Gabrielli ’07, is now studying
kinesiology at C.S.U. Sacramento and
was recently accepted into the school’s
Athletic Training Education Program.
an internship at CB, regularly joins in on
classes after school and fills in for Stark
when scheduling conflicts arise.
“I joined the athletic training
program in my sophomore year at CB,”
says Gabrielli. “As a four-sport athlete,
I had been spending a lot of time in
the training room because of injuries.
When I first met Darci, I didn’t like her
at all because she wouldn’t let me play,”
laughs Gabrielli. “But, the more I was
there and the more I learned, I knew
that this is what I wanted to do with my
life.”
Natalie Hastings ’11, enjoys
the time she spends with Stark and
appreciates the opportunity to learn
more. “Ms. Stark is so knowledgeable
and she relates to us in a way that we are
learning and having fun,” says Hastings.
“The athletic training program definitely
inspired me and I hope to be able to
study nursing at St. Mary’s College.”
Alanna Anderson ’11, says her time
spent as an athletic trainer affirmed
her desire to study medicine. “I had
considered studying medicine,” says
Anderson. “This program showed me
that it really is possible for me to pursue
College Admissions Off to a Great Start
College admissions for members of the Class of 2011 are off to a great start. Although this year
continues the challenging trend of colleges and universities cutting back on the number of students
they will be admitting due to budget constraints, many CB students have already received
great news from some prestigious colleges and universities:
CB Saving Lives One Pint at a Time
CB students, faculty and staff
rolled up their sleeves to save lives and
celebrate student Tim Pfeifer’s recent
double lung transplant with a blood
drive and fundraiser on November 29,
2010. Organized by Darci Stark, CB
athletic trainer and physical education
teacher, and student athletic trainers, the
group’s efforts resulted in a record 202
pints of blood and $300 for the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation (CFF).
“This year, we celebrated Tim’s
transplant in September and pray for
him as he continues with his recovery,”
says Stark. “We knew we wanted to
hold this drive in Tim’s honor and give
Chemistry Students
Participate in Environmental
Water Project
CB’s Christian Service-Learning
program takes lessons learned in the
classroom and applies them through
meaningful service projects that help the
community. For Dave Nelson’s honors
chemistry, this meant some after-school
time on the river this past November.
Students ventured out on Nelson’s
boat to collect water samples on the
American and Sacramento Rivers. The
samples, collected from areas only
accessible by boat, were then analyzed
back in the laboratory. The results
were then shared with the California
Department of Water Resources and
the California Regional Environmental
Education Community. The project will
be repeated in the spring so the students
people who might not be able to donate
blood a chance to help by supporting
the CFF. The fact that we broke our
school blood drive record and collected
$300 shows how much Tim is loved
throughout our school community.”
“I’m very grateful that so many
people came out to donate blood and
support cystic fibrosis research,” says
Pfeifer.
“We are grateful to Ms. Stark,
the student athletic trainers and the
CB community for hosting such
successful, lifesaving blood drives,” says
BloodSource Chief Operating Officer,
Dirk Johnson. “For the past two years,
can compare
and track the
differences, if
any, in the water
quality between
the seasons.
“This was
a great lesson
for our studentscientists
because it
shows that there
is always an
opportunity to
be of service
to others,” says Nelson. “By helping
provide data, we hope to help, in our
own small way, to protect the rivers that
12
the school has earned our Largest
Single-Day Blood Drive High School
Award and the timing this year could
not have been better as it really helped
us replenish our supplies following
the high-usage Thanksgiving holiday
weekend.”
Because each pint of blood can
be separated into various components
and transfused to three patients, the
Tim Pfeifer blood drive may have saved
or improved the lives of 606 patients
throughout Northern California.
Happiest Place on Earth
for CB’s Jazz Band
Each year, Disneyland Parks
invites high school jazz bands to
audition for a chance to perform at
Disneyland. For the fourth straight
year, CB’s talented musicians made
the cut. In addition to performing
for park visitors, the students are
invited to participate in a music
workshop featuring renown
musicians. This year’s workshop
featured saxophone player, Sal
Lozano.
“Sal Lozano is one of the
most sought-after saxophonists
and woodwind players working
today,” says Travis Maslen, CB
band instructor. “It is so exciting
to see our students learn from
musicians who really are at the top
of their field. As a musician, Mr.
Lozano has recorded numerous
movie soundtracks; he’s performed
with symphonies and is a featured
member of Gordon Goodwin’s Big
Phat Band. He regularly performs
14
on the shows Dancing With the
Stars and American Idol. And, he
was great with our kids.”
“The performance was fun, but,
the workshop was awesome,” says
David McClain ’11. “He related
really well with us and I learned
so much in the time we had with
him. We got to play for him and
he critiqued us and helped us get
better. I am so glad that we got to
take that trip.”
Sharing Some Christmas Spirit
CB’s eight choral groups and eight instrumental performance groups shared a bit of Christmas spirit with classmates, family
and friends at their 2010 Christmas performances. Audiences filled the Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium for the joyful
performances.

Give Our Students a Place to Shine!
“A performing arts building would give us a place to
belong and flourish.”
Thomas Gherini ‘11
CB is the place to be for area visual
and performing artists. With eight
choral groups, three annual theater
productions, eight visual arts courses,
eight instrumental performance groups
and four annual art exhibitions, students
enjoy numerous opportunities to
discover and develop their God-given
artistic abilities.
“Arts education is a vital
component of the high school
experience for more than 600 of our
1,022 students,” says CB President,
Lorcan Barnes. “We have a dedicated,
talented team of faculty and remarkable
students. Now, it is imperative that
we give these young men and women
a place to shine – a performing
arts center that allows them to fully
showcase their talents.”
In November of 2008, Christian
Brothers High School publicly
announced its Building on the Tradition
Campaign – Phase II with the grand
opening of the $4.5 million field
house. While its completion marked a
significant component of the campaign,
the next critical need for students is a
performing arts center. Design plans
for the new 299-seat facility are well
underway. Construction will begin after
securing an additional $4 million in
pledges and donations.
“While the campaign slowed a bit
during the economic downturn, we are
seeing increased interest and support,”
says Barnes. “We are working with
architects to ensure
that we are ready to
go when the funding
is secured so that
we can provide our
talented young men
and women with a
facility that is worthy
of their talent.”
The performing
arts facility phase of
construction also
includes significant
upgrades to the
chapel and addresses
other infrastructure needs.
“There are so many students here who are serious about
the arts. Our performances and productions would be
much more professional.”
Anne Grambusch ‘11
15
“I would love to have a
theatre on campus. We could
stage bigger and better
productions. And, it would feel
like there is a place for me.”
Brothers. A nine-year veteran of the
Falcons’ staff, Petrissans has coached
the offensive and defensive lines,
linebackers and at times coordinated the
offense and the defense. “Coach P,” as
he is affectionately known to players,
is looking forward to building on past
successes to create an even brighter
future for the team.
“I really enjoy teaching and
coaching the students at CB,” says
Petrissans. “Our kids are amazing. My
time here has been truly rewarding on
and off the field and has really helped
me shape my vision for the program. I
learned a lot from Andre Johansen and
Bobby Fresques during the nine years I
have been coaching at CB. When Andre
decided to step down , I really believed
that it was my time to lead. I’m thrilled
education from Cal and single-subject
teaching credentials in social science
and physical education. In addition to
his coaching duties, Petrissans teaches
history and physical education at CB.
“I really think Coach P. will turn the
program around. He will incorporate
discipline and a game plan that will help
CB win games and definitely make it
past the first round of the playoffs,”
says University of Nevada, Reno bound
the players, our strengths and our
weaknesses, and he knows how to use
our talent. We’re just going to keep
getting better.”

What Happened to the
Bishop Armstrong Crest?
Last summer’s remodel of the school’s entryway led to a
number of questions regarding the location and condition of
the school crest. Fortunately, construction crews were able
to preserve the much-heralded seal and thanks to the efforts
of Joe Guilherme, AFSC, maintenance supervisor, and Br.
Christopher Donnelly, FSC, it was embedded in concrete in
a shaded, grassy area approximately 50 feet from its original
home.
Safeguarding the seal, which is actually the crest of Bishop
Armstrong, became a time-honored tradition which students
still embrace today. Freshmen quickly learn to revere the
symbol and visitors are asked to walk around the iconic bit of
history. Expanding on that tradition, Br. Christopher Donnelly,
FSC, worked with an alumnus of La Salle High School in
Oregon, to create a granite version of the Christian Brothers
High School seal which has been installed in the recently
expanded courtyard area adjacent to the cafeteria.
book store manager, Susanne Currie, found herself with a bit of extra space.
CB’s own licensed contractor, Br. Christopher Donnelly, FSC, helped optimize
the area by converting half into a student store and half into a public space for
student leadership.
“We love that the student activities’ representatives and clubs have a dedicated
area in which to promote fun events on campus,” says Rose Ann Holmes, student
activities director.
Currie, who manages an inventory of school supplies and uniform apparel in
the store, continues to serve as liaison between the school, the online book store
and text book publishers. She is enjoying the bright, new space and the opportunity
to spend the rest of her time working in the school’s new entry building.
the people I most admire in terms
of his generosity, his devotion to his
“Without you I would never have a chance
to be here or have this gift of hope…
Some day when I am able, I will help a
child in need as you have done for me.”

“I know that one day when I go to college I will look back at
my days at CB and be grateful, even more than now, that I
have received this opportunity. Without the help you have
given me there is no doubt in my mind that I would never
have made it to CB. Thank you for believing in me. Thank
you for caring. Thank you for giving me a chance.”
“Christian Brothers can sometimes be a haven from my house…
All things are possible through Christ who strengthens us. I have
no doubt about my future because I’m on the right path, and I
couldn’t be here without you. Thank you for all your support.
“I am grateful to attend a school
where community feels like a family.”
“My father used to work two jobs
to keep me in private school. I’ve always
been private, charter or even
home schooled. Before my dad died
when I was only 13 years old, we
had already planned for me to take
the test at Christian Brothers…
You have truly and in all honesty
given me a gift that I can never
thank you enough for.”
“Going to Christian Brothers is a blessing. Without your
help this education would not be possible and I appreciate it
so much. It is an opportunity of a lifetime and something I
don’t plan on wasting.”
“My favorite coach
is Mr. Carmazzi.”
It’s greatly appreciated.”
“One of my favorite
teachers is Mr. Delgado.”
“My mom works a full time job to support me and my siblings.
Despite all her hard work there is no possible way she can
keep paying my tuition for me to be able to keep attending
CBHS. So, needless to say, I am truly
grateful for your kindness and generosity
on my behalf.”
“My favorite teacher at this school
is Dr. Peterson. She is eager to teach
and that makes me eager to learn.”
Christian Brothers alumni have
135 years of special memories,
friendship and tradition to celebrate.
And celebrate they did as approximately
500 alumni, family and friends attended
the 41st annual Alumni Dinner crab
feed on February 5.
The evening’s program included
the awarding of Golden Diplomas
to the Class of ’61 at a pre-dinner
celebration. The Honorary Alumna
Award was presented to Suzie
(Franzoia)Rozewski for years of
dedicated service. Throughout the
years, Rozewski has donated her time
and talent as a graphic designer to help
promote alumni functions including
the Wine, Beer and Food Extravaganza,
alumni dinners and the annual golf
tournament. Most recently, she shared
her expertise and time with Bill Iliff
’76, with the design and layout of his
recently published book on CB’s history,
Let Us Remember. She is a passionate
and tireless advocate of the school and
mother of a freshman, Daniel.
The Honorary Diploma Award
was presented to Tim Deary. Deary
attended CB in the 1970’s during his
freshman and sophomore years. He
then decided to follow older brother,
Mike, to Kennedy High School. A
decision he says he regretted almost
immediately, Deary maintained his
friendships at CB and has been
an ardent supporter of the school
through family-owned business, Nor
Cal Beverage. Deary and the family
continue to be major supporters of
the school through events like the
Alumni Dinner, the Wine Beer &
Food Extravaganza and the annual
fundraising auction.
The prestigious Alumni Service
Award, exemplifying the Association’s
highest standard of giving back to
Christian Brothers, was presented
to alumnus Danny Delgado ’79
for his many years of service and
dedication. As a member of the Alumni
Association, Delgado was part of the
committee to launch the alumni golf
24
tournament and the Wine, Beer & Food
Extravaganza. He is a regular attendee
at alumni events, a favorite teacher to
countless students, an innovator in the
classroom and a champion of all things
Lasallian.
The Alumni Association would like
to thank the many volunteers who made
the evening so special, especially the
Class of ’82 for their hard work with
serving and clean-up.
La Salle Club Celebrates Area Greats
The La Salle Club welcomed
eight new members into the ranks of
its Coaches’ Hall of Fame this past
November. Honorees at the 16th annual
celebratory dinner included Don Dillon,
Ed Lombardi, Frank Negri, Gordon
Pistochini, Dick Schromm, Jerry
Sullivan and Harvey Tahara. CB varsity
baseball coach, Rich Henning ’78,
received the Ron Limeberger ’53 Coach
of the Year Award.
As a high school student, Rich
Henning ’78 was a dedicated and
talented athlete. As a young man, he
lived “the dream” playing several years
of minor league baseball and then
working as a professional scout. As a
father, he coached sons, Andrew ’04
and Bo ’07, in baseball, football, and
basketball.
Today, he shares his knowledge and
dedication to the school as CB’s varsity
baseball coach, a position he has held
since the summer of 2008. Henning
1 2 3
worked for five and one-half years as
the school’s assistant athletic director.
He also served five seasons as the
varsity men’s basketball coach, and three
years as assistant coach for both varsity
baseball and basketball.
“Rich is incredibly knowledgeable
and has a great rapport with the
students,” says Jill Bennett, athletic
director. “He is a student of the game
and surrounds himself with people who
complement his strengths. I appreciate
his loyalty to CB athletics and I believe
the La Salle Club made an excellent
selection in naming Rich the Ron
Limeberger Coach of the Year.”
“Ron Limeberger taught me to
drive. He was my baseball coach. He
took me to the father/son dinner every
year because he knew that I didn’t have
a father,” says Henning. “His son, Mark,
is one of my best friends. Receiving an
award in Ron’s name is such an honor.
I will always be grateful for the way that
he welcomed my family into his. It was
a privilege to be his student, and as an
adult, to become his friend.”
The La Salle Club was started in
1939 to provide support to the athletic
programs of Christian Brothers High
School. Legend has it that the club
began at a local watering hole with the
passing of a hat while commiserating a
painful loss to Sacramento High School.
The tradition of supporting CB sports
continues as the club raises funds each
year with membership drives and two
recognition dinners.
Bill Iliff ’76
Completes
CB History
Book
The historical roots for Christian
Brothers High School begin not with its
opening in 1876 but with a vision in
1853…
Bill Iliff ’76 may have had a
different answer to Jerry Kirrene’s
’53 invitation to join CB’s history
committee if he had known that
the monthly meeting would turn into countless hours of research, numerous
interviews, trips to the Brothers’ archives in Napa and, ultimately, writing a book.
“Jerry asked me to put together a narrative of CB’s history in Sacramento,”
says Iliff. “I started the project and before I knew it, I was hooked. In trying to
put the school into the context of what was going on in Sacramento at the time, I
read an account by Sacramento schools historian, Richard C. Rogers, in which he
says that Sacramento High School was really not much of a school prior to 1876.
They basically had a room or two, teachers, books and pupils. They had no maps,
or pictures, or equipment. The tax payers were not interested in providing more.
At that moment, I really understood just how groundbreaking the Brothers were
and how fortunate the Sacramento community was to have them here.”
The book, Let Us Remember, begins with the Archbishop of San Francisco’s
15-year campaign to persuade the Church to send the Brothers of the Christian
Schools to California. It touches on the school’s three locations, six names,
reflections from the Brothers, notable alumni and some of the many traditions that
have shaped campus life and welcomed generations of young men and women.
“The book is more than I could have ever imagined,” says Kirrene. “This
project wasn’t easy. Bill put a lot of work into Let Us Remember, it’s very well written,
the pictures are fantastic and I really think people are going to enjoy the results.”
by the “Interfaces” exhibit and check
out Bianca Rodriquez ’06. While
you will not actually see Rodriquez,
you will have the opportunity to see
and interact with her likeness in the
form of twin virtual docents, Ada and
Grace. Rodriquez, a college student and
model, was overwhelmingly selected
by museum visitors as the face that
most captured intelligence, friendliness
and beauty. She then spent a day at
the Institute for Creative Technologies
(ICT) graphics lab at the University of
Southern California being photographed
and filmed to capture numerous
emotions and movements. ICT used the
