To Kill A Mockingbird
Brendon Fernandez stars as Atticus Finch in the recent play, To Kill A
Mockingbird, based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and
adapted for stage by Christopher Sergel,
This stylised and unconventional adaptation features a strong multi-racial
cast of veterans and promising actors from both television and theatre.
Aggressively modern and assertively trendy, audiences will be treated
to a visual pastiche inspired by the coexistence of good and evil, and the
simplicity of light and dark. While taking artistic liberties in its staging,
the issues of class, courage, compassion and prejudice, explored in the
book remains fundamental.
The 14th Asian Television Awards
was held on 3 Dec 2009, in the
presence of popular celebrities
and top executives from various
broadcasters around the region.
As a pan-regional event, the Asian
Television Awards is the only event
of its kind within the Asian region,
with a prestigious reputation of
showcasing only the best quality
Asian television production. 1,020
entries were submitted and the
Gala dinner was held to honour the
winners’ success in performance,
programming and production.
FLY Entertainment managed the
event with a spectrum of services
rendered. From providing hosts,
Nadya Hutagalung and Allan Wu, to
video production of the entry clips
and stills, to event management of
the program for the night, it was an
honour for FLY Entertainment to
make our contribution back to the
entertainment industry.
Worth mentioning, FLY Artiste
Chua En Lai was highly commended
in “Best Comedy Performance by
an Actor/Actress” Award for his
performance in Parental Guidance.
“Devil Eats Prata” raised a total of
S$74,000 for the Yellow Ribbon Project!
A decade on and FLY Entertainment
continues to make a first with the
first interactive Fashion Dinner
Theatre! Held over a period of 4
days from 7th – 10th October 2009,
the event was jointly organised
by FLY and klapsons, the newest
boutique hotel in town.
The collaboration was special to
both parties as it commemorated
the official launch of the hotel and
funds were raised to aid “Yellow
Ribbon Project”.
Featuring a huge talented pool of
FLY artistes, the dinner theatre
involved drama and interactivity
with guests. A fashion show was also
choreographed to feature a couture
line-up providing dinner guests with
a fresh and different experience
worth remembering. As a unique
platform to celebrate this milestone,
it was an opportunity to celebrate
the landmark 10th anniversary of
FLY, and showcase talents of artistes
under the management of FLY.
Brendon Fernandez & Chua Enlai
The evening was well attended by
many media personalities, corporate
partners across various industries, as
well as friends of FLY.
We’re pleased to announce that the
event successfully wrapped up with
An accomplished actor / producer, Tan
Kheng Hua continues to strive for more
personal firsts, even after being in the
industry for more than 25 years. Kheng
recently closed The Composer at The
Esplanade Studio. It played to a successful
80% house and was the first play in
which she was director, producer as well
as actor. Kheng, a mother and wife in real
life, is currently seen on Mr & Mrs Kok,
the first television programme she created
and is one of the producers for to be
commissioned by Mediacorp.
“At the end of the day, if i have a
great role, a wonderful director and
actors with whom i have fantastic trust
and chemistry – acting always takes
the cake lah. i suspect, always will.”
Share with us what it’s like to be
Kheng Hua for a day.
Lately, Kheng wakes up a little lost. She had a
really hard year in 2009 and is still trying to
find her feet in 2010. Generally, her days are
peppered with chores – sending her girl to and
from school; leisure – lunch with friends and
long chats about all and nothing; work – if a
project looms; dreams – of what next she’d
like to do; worries – of what she hasn’t done
or has done wrong.
What projects are you working on at
the moment?
It’s my kids’ PSLE year, so have had to cut
down and turn down loads. Right now, just
producing the musical “The Full Monty”
with Adrian and Tracie Pang’s new theatre
company, Pangdemonium.
Among the various roles you
play at work – acting, producing
and directing – which is your
favourite? Why?
At the end of the day, if I have a great
role, a wonderful director and actors
with whom I have fantastic trust and
chemistry – acting always takes the cake
lah. I suspect, always will.
What would you name as your biggest
accomplishment so far?
Simple – having my daughter…
Is there any other hidden talent we don’t
know about?
I can stand on my head…for a long time and with
great ease. Ta-dah!
What if your husband, Yu-Beng, wasn’t in
the same industry as you – what do you
think would change?
Maybe the amount of time we spent together?
I want my child to be just like you. What
were you like as a kid?
Skinny, freckled, tomboy, agile, moody.
You’re born in the year of the Tiger –
do you think you have the character
traits of your Chinese zodiac? Why?
I think I am very much a tiger – brave,
stubborn, fierce, swift, sometimes feared
but can be extremely cuddly as well.
“All the parents of my friends love me.
i think this is my special X men ability.
to make parents of friends adore me.”
Share with us what it’s like to be Shane
for a day.
First of all you have to wake up at least 2 hours
late. Then you go to pour yourself a bowl of
cereal, for what is now effectively lunch, only
to find that you haven’t done the dishes and
have no clean cereal bowls. The afternoon will
be spent in a blur of being an unpaid taxi driver
for various members of your family. You will
insist on some ‘Shane Time.’ Which is essentially
getting a sweat on for a couple of hours. Go
get sworn at by 13-year-olds from all over the
world on Xbox live. Then try to be amorous
with the lovely wife only to be told “It’s late.
Maybe if you had not spent all that time on
the Xbox...” Try to fall asleep. Fail. Repeat
from the beginning.
What projects are you working on at
the moment?
I can’t tell you yet, but it involves traveling!
Keeping my fingers crossed.
What would you name as your biggest
accomplishment so far?
My resting heart rate is about 54 beats a
minute... Does that count?
Is there any other hidden talent we
don’t know about?
All the parents of my friends love me. I think
this is my special X men ability. To make
parents of friends adore me.
I want my child to be just like you.
What were you like as a kid?
Shy and due to having long hair I also
had problems convincing adults that I
was indeed a boy.
A new edition to our FLY family, Henry
Golding is a spirited individual and
charismatic sort of person who will give
you something to smile about after your
first meeting. His infectious laugher and
quirky yet very British nature makes
him quite the charmer. A seasoned host
on 8TV’s The Quickie, Henry is now a
permanent sunny face on our shores as
the resident hunk on Castrol Football
Crazy on ESPN.
Share with us what it’s like to be Henry
for a day.
hmm... what is it like to be Henry for the
day? Well for one its definately a lot less
exciting than you would think, and my little
character habbits you probably would find
rather strange! I do like to think I have a unique
way at looking at the world, you would be a lot
less stressed for sure!
What projects are you working on at
the moment?
At the moment I’m working With ESPN on a
show called Castrol Football Crazy. It’s a mad
cap look at the world of football with my cohost
Jamie Yeo. its alot of fun and the crew at
the studios are some of the best in south east
asia at what they do. I also have a Travel show
I will be filming throughout March and April,
seeing me travel through each state in Malaysia
tasting and experience what the diverse culture
has to offer, should be a very interesting month!
You are half Malaysian and half British
– do you think you’re more Malaysian
or British?
Id like to say I’m an equal in both senses... if
I was more or less of the other I would side
judgement and I much prefer to keep an open
mind thus letting me experience each nationality
without a veil of pre-conception.
What would you name as your biggest
accomplishment so far?
I was put on the front cover in August man
magazine in Malaysia as 1 of the top 10 men in
Malaysia for 2009. it was a complete surprise
but it made me feel like people were starting to
notice what I was doing and why I was doing
it. But the step up to ESPN was a big moment
for me to as it opened my exposure to over 14
countries asia wide.
“the best thing my
parents could ever have
done was to let me
learn how i learnt best;
through experiencing
life first hand through
trial and error”
Is there any other hidden talent we
don’t know about?
Well I’m a fully trained hair stylist... I
worked in Sloane square for about 3 years
professionally but was doing hair for a total
of 5 years! We worked behind the scenes for
fashion walks, photoshoots and the makeover
duo Trinny and Susanna
I want my child to be just like you.
What were you like as a kid?
Well being the youngest of three I was always
very independant, and the best thing my parents
could ever have done was to let me learn how
I learnt best, through experiencing life first
hand through trial and era... they also installed
great morals at a young age so think of it as
the operating system to a computer, everything
works of those sets of “rules”.
You’re born in the year of the Rabbit
– do you think you have the character
traits of your Chinese zodiac? Why?
I was born Feburary 5th 1987, so I was a
Rabbit. I think it suits me to the T, I think of
myself as very earthly and one who enjoys
nature with all its little details, “you can see
the world, but do you observe it”, attention to
detail is vital in appreciating life. :)
phuA chu KAnG - the moVie
interview with irene Ang
Tell us about your experience in KL filming
“PCK The Movie” as Rosie Phua for the
first time.
It was a pleasant surprise. The Malaysians are more
excited about our show, PCK and they are more
vocal! Everywhere we go, people would come up to
say how much they love the show and request to take
pictures. The crew we worked with is awesome - very
dedicated and professional. Both Gurmit and I are
very impressed by them.
Share with us what a day filming in
KL is like?
We wake up at an unearthly hour everyday for makeup.
While I am getting my make-up done, I’ll have
coffee and half-boiled eggs for breakfast. Once the
make-up is done, we will wait for the van to pick us
up and we will travel for 1 to 1 ½ hours before we
arrive at the shooting venue. The shoot usually lasts
for 12 hours a day! We put up at the Grand Dorsett
Hotel – one of the nicest hotels I’ve stayed in my
many trips to Malaysia. It’s a nice place with great
view but the weather is damn hot lah!
How different is it for you to be filming
for television and movie?
The plot is more emotional and the screen is bigger
- all my wrinkles are showing and even my nostril
seems bigger! Hahaha! Everything is magnified so
our big “campy” actions have to be toned down.
Television takes a far longer time to complete than
movie, and pay MUCH lesser!
interview w i t h i re ne a ng FLY
We heard that you had your first on-screen kiss ever,
how did you feel about it, was it the toughest part of
filming the movie? Be honest!
It’s true, I’ve never kissed on-screen before but it’s not the kissing
that is the toughest. It was my most nervous scene ever because the
guy is a very dear old friend! It is what the plot requires but he is so
charming and nice about it so I think it went well.
The filming of PCK requires you to be away from home
and in KL for a month, was it tough for you? What did
you miss most about home?
Actually, being one month away from the craziness and multitasking
at home was rather refreshing. I learned a lot while shooting
for this movie, both about myself and about Malaysia. I had some
local friends who brought me around to places like the Pasar Malam
or for massages after work, so it was memorable. And for the time
alone in the hotel, it allowed me to spend quality time with myself
and God and that was beyond great!
Do you miss the previous casts of PCK – Tan Kheng
Hua, Pierre Png, Neo Swee Lin and the Tau Huay boys?
Of course! Especially Kheng! Swee Lin and Kay Siu were there for
the movie too. I missed Swee Lin on the TV show so it was really
nice to work with both of them on the movie. Also, I particularly
miss teasing Pierre. (We always do!)
How different is the movie from the TV serial?
Its got more depth, less ‘cartoon-ish’ and I hope it will tug some
heartstrings because its not all comedy and slapstick.
Anything for the audiences to look out for in the
movie?
Three things! One, Gurmit is a “transformer”, watch him
transform in the show. Two, Alamak’s (‘Hui ge’) very GOOD
English. Lastly, three men and a lady - For once in my life, there
are three men chasing after me! Mwahahahaha! Never before!
I’m so going to miss that!
A recent basketball convert’s perspective
by Cheryl Han
Marcus Ng snatches from the opposition
Basketball has always been about the
community for me - while growing up,
the basketball court had always been
a communal space – a dull, concrete
square that springs to life during
recess where the big boys would shoot
hoops; the younger boys watch in
envy; and girls would fight to use the
same space to play their own games –
catching, captain’s ball or Zero Point.
Yes, we were kids then, but we sure
knew how to fight for female rights.
Occasionally, the heavy Orange ball
would fall on a random girl’s head,
cause her to cry and get the big boys
in trouble (and that’s how we won).
When the bell rings to sound the end
of recess, this all disappears and it
falls back to a dull, concrete square.
As an adult now watching the Asean
Basketball League, it’s not much
different – sure, the dull concrete
square is replaced with a shiny,
spanking new floor plastered with
sponsors’ logos – but the big boys still
play; and the girls, well, they appear
at half-time with their cheerleading
routine and still steal the limelight. Remember how
you had to root for your school team? When the
Singapore Slingers play, you’ll suddenly discover
your patriotism buried from within as you scream
and shout in support.
After all, it’s been just six months, but the Singapore
Slingers have done tremendously well in the
inaugural Asean Basketball League playing against
our neighbours – the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia,
Kuala Lumpur and Thailand. And besides, the only
professional basketball team in Singapore is made
up of a majority of locals, groomed from our very
own dull, concrete courts. One of the favourites –
Hong Wei Jian – affectionally known as ‘Flyboy’
for his ability to jump high, garnered an average
of 7.6 points this season and if he continues the
level of play, he would be a hit in the ABL for
years to come. Co-captain, Michael Wong, is one
of Singapore basketball’s powerhouses and one of
those that the younger boys look up to, with his
many years of experience and coaching.
The Singapore Slingers recently concluded their
first season in the Asean Basketball League (ABL)
after crashing out in the semi-finals of the ABL
Semi-Final Playoff against Satria Muda Britama of
Indonesia by 2 to 1. I was there to watch the home
game, very much in frustration and anger, as the
Indonesian fans overpowered us and drowned our
little cheers.
“Singapore Slingers fans, where are you?”,
I pleaded in desperation on Twitter. “Agree!! We
need to make more noise.. SM fans are scary..”, was
the only meek reply I got in Twitterverse.
It’s a formula that’s bound to work –cheap tickets
(tickets are from $8), good food, great music
and cheerleaders, attractive prizes such as a 40”
LCD TV and digital cameras, and for added
measure, entertainment for the audience such as
Kiss Cam (where a couple has to kiss when the
camera points at you) and T-shirt giveaways from
the Slinger girls.
So what’s keeping Singaporean fans away? To be fair, I’ve
witnessed seeing the audience at the Indoor Stadium grow
steadily but very gradually. But perhaps we need even more help
to face the opposition, with Singaporeans being typically quiet
and reserved. Nonetheless, it’s encouraging as the first season and
there’s nowhere else to go but up. With sheer perseverance and
determination, I’m confident we will get there. To quote one of
basketball’s best-known player:
I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in
my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games.
26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the
game winning shot and missed. I’ve
failed over and over and over again in
my life. And that is why I succeed.
michael jordan
Would you come watch the game
next season? Keep updated with
Introducing Victor Tan, the
blind artist from Singapore who
makes huge sculptures with metal
wires. This picture was taken at
Visually Handicapped), where he was
working on his new exhibit. I have
